I have been trying to get a boot image to display on a minimal install of Ubuntu. I have followed the steps in the grub2 wiki but I can't get it to work. attached are the steps I have taken with no change in boot. (No Image)

I installed Ubuntu on my system after first installing Kubuntu. Now when I boot into Kubuntu I have this garish mashup of Ubuntu and Kubuntu splash screens. They are mixed up in both the grub2 boot and the Kubuntu login.I tried running sudo update-grub within Kubuntu but that didn't change the screens. How do I restore the default (elegant) Kubuntu splash screens?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now without any issues. I have also been dual booting with grub2 for a while now, only issues being crappy customization. But anyways I had my grub2 splash all set up the way i liked, with a nice background and everything. I run every update Ubuntu wants and have never had an issue until recently.
On June 3rd I ran an update that Ubuntu requested, it installed a new kernel (-2.6.32-22) and requested a restart, as usual. after restarting, my grub splash is gone. I thought no biggie ill just run `update-grub` as i have before and it will fix everything...nope
I get the error message `head: cannot open `/boot/grub/video.lst' for reading: No such file or directory` right where the "image found" message is supposed to be.
I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

I recently got a netbook and setup as dual boot between win7 starter and 9.10 (64bit). Win 7 starter is not impressive so i want to nuke it and give the space all to my /USR partion. I am comfortable working with Gparted and assume that i can launch using my gparted live usb and delete the windows partion and then resize the /usr partion.
what changes do i need to make w/ Grub2? I would prefer not to see the Grub menu at all and have it load right the main kernel if possible. Also, if this is possible is there a way to get to the Grub menu during boot should i need to select a different kernel?
After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off
I'm trying to get a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10. I've used unetbootin to write the image to a usb flash, but every time I try to boot from it I just get the burg splash screen. I've changed the boot order in bios and so on, but it starts burg all the time. The image md5 is also right.

I just upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (beta2) restarted and the splash was screwed i thought meh i can live with it then went into my account switched to tty1(ctrl+alt+F1) and it was the same. got annoyed now asking had anyone else encountered/know how to fix this problem. pictures attached sorry for bad quality took on phone, but that is how it really looks.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:
comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.
I boot up after a fresh install and I don't get a boot splash screen. I really cant find a way to fix and some times it does not go to the login screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I have a really old (about 10 years) desktop PC manufactured by Packard Bell, and would like to get Lubuntu 10.10 running on it. I had previously burnt a CD with it, but boot time was incredibly slow on the machine and installation of Lubuntu crashed my system. As a result, I created a LiveUSB (as you do).
When I entered my CMOS, I discovered the BIOS on my machine isn't able to boot from USB, and I wasn't able to find a BIOS update for my AMIBIOS chip on the American Megatrends website. So I booted my GParted Live CD and created an ext4 partition at /dev/sda3, which I proceeded to install GRUB2 onto via the commands:

# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/grub/
# grub-isntall --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt/grub /dev/sda
This, as planned, succeeded; I can now get into a GRUB2 prompt when my machine boots...! The only problem is, GRUB2 won't detect my USB...or any device other than my hard drive
So, is there any way I can get GRUB2 to find my USB?
P.S. The USB works fine on my laptop, which does support USB booting. I can also boot the USB on my laptop via its GRUB2 command line, using:

I have a asus eeepc 1101ha. With Karmic,it would boot into w7 without problems.I installed Lucid on another partition,and after that the w7 grub entry would leave me with a blinking cursor in the left top corner, and hang.
I booted with the w7 dvd, ran bootrec.exe to restore mbr and bootmgr, and the booted into w7 to confirm. It was working. Then I booted with the live dvd, mounted the lucid partition, and installed grub. Now choosing the w7 entry would ask for the boot media, and pressing any key would bring me back to the grub menu. Lucid and karmic boot without problems.
Installing grub from karmic now gave the same error. Running update-grub didn't change anything.As I had to use w7, I booted again from the dvd, and restored again mbr and bootmgr. Booted into w7, used it, then once again to the live cd, to reinstall grub, and once again the w7 entry in grub makes grub ask for the boot media.I've attached my boot info script.Ah, I also played with the bootable flag for the /dev/sda1 partition, but it didn't change anything.
I've already had WinXP SP3 installed on one HDD, so i've installed 10.04 on my spare HDD. When I try to boot to Win, I get ntoskrnl.exe missing error. This is my boot info script report:

I've tried with different boot orders in bios, reinstalling Grub2 (several times ), I've even tried to install lilo through software center but didn't know how to configure it ...
I used to have 2 HDDs for ubuntu: 1 x 80GB and 1 x 500GB The 500GB disk was my /home directory and is now used exclusively for Windows 7. I have now moved /home to the 80GB drive and have modified /etc/fstab to point /home to /home rather than /dev/sdb1. However, I cannot boot into ubuntu. I have tried using Super Boot Disk cd-rom but still no joy. I think I need to fix grub and have tried by booting into a Live-CD and following a tutorial I found on the forums but it complains about not being able to find a device.map I guess this has something to do with the fact that the 500GB HDD is now gonoe but am not sure how to resolve this issue. how to recreate this file but the command failed.

This is automaticly genarated after installed ubuntu 10.10. It shows black screen with a flashing cursor after press enter. Grub 0.97 also does this with:

But the wierd thing is my usb stick can boot windows 7 succesfully with the same configuration. Whats wrong with that? How can do with grub.cfg?
ok so sounds like everyone elses issue that i`ve seen on here but i had it all working properly until i booted into ubuntu and updated grub somehow and when it told me to reboot all i got was a grub rescue error.
Now i got ubuntu 10.10 installed to try and fix the grub 2 error but now cant get it to boot windows from the menu.
As I now have a 120Gb SSD in an efi-capable laptop, I'd like to re-install 11.04. I'd like to format the SSD as gpt and make it bootable with efi. And I'd like to use grub2 as the bootloader.
Can anybody walk me through this? I'm pretty new to Ubuntu, though I've used several other distros for a number of years. When I last installed 11.04, I don't remember seeing options for gpt, for example. And I don't know how get things booting with efi.

i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?
i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)

It's a Dell XPS400 PC with 160 GB HDD. I have a non-LVM, primary partition for the boot file system (/boot) of 200 MB. I also have seven logical volumes (LVM partitions): six for each of the /(root), swap, /home, /usr, /var and /tmp, and one vbox_win_xp_base as a raw disk for running Win XP in the Virtualbox. I went on to configure all these without rebooting the system in between. Later I also updated to the kernel version 2.6.31._20. Next day I decided to reboot my system. But then the bootloader (GRUB2 in my case) won't able to boot it and gives the error mentioned above.

I am trying to dual-boot windows xp and ubuntu 8.04LTS from two separate hard drives, on a compaq d510 evo SFF. With research, the best way to do that seemed to be to upgrade to Grub 2 and all would be well...not so much. I installed each OS with the other hard drive removed, fyi. I believe that this tells me that I SHOULD be able to boot off either drive, if I could get Grub 2 to recognize...

I have also tried adding the proper code to the 40 custom file, and while I could at least get it to acknowledge my changes, I couldn't seem to find the magic code to get it right....
The other thing I tried was adding GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

and last but not least, here is my results.txt from the boot info script. I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling grub 2, perhaps I created issues there?

Here are the steps that worked for me to get Windows XP as the default boot using Grub2.During my initial Window XP install I had partitioned my hard drive into 3 partitions:

I upgraded my main box to Ubuntu 10.04 and everything runs fine, except for a problem with grub: I can't modify the boot menu in any way, I'm stuck with what grub2 thought was the optimal setup at installation time (and it got it wrong, btw). The current boot menu lists:
- my older 9.10 install in sdb2 (one kernel)
- legacy windows XP install on sda1
- my even older 9.04 install in sdb1 (two kernel versions)
- my new install in sdb3, with only one kernel (the one coming with the distro CD)
I tried anything I could think of to modify this menu:
- modify the /etc grub config file then running sudo update-grub
- using a specific app (system manager? don't remember its name)
- upgrading to the latest kernel
- removing and reinstalling grub
to no avail: the menu is still there in the above form, and I have to manually select the 10.04 (old) kernel by hand every time I reboot.
I have been searching in preparation to install 10.04.1 with 2 installations of Windows,already installed.(Win 7 then Vista) I have left room at the end of the drive for Ubuntu. When I get to the stage to select the boot options and click on advanced, what should I select?
