Ubuntu :: Seeking Thorough Documentation Of SMART Values?

Apr 5, 2010

I am looking for comprehensive documentation of the SMART values that are reported in Palimpsest. For example, I am getting the following result:

Attribute: Reallocated Sector Count
Assessment: Warning
Normalized: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 36
Value: 1 sector

I would like to find a very thorough description of the meaning of these values, how they relate to each other, and how to interpret them.

Ubuntu :: Seeking Router With Parental Controls

Feb 7, 2010

a widow with 4 kids - 2 of whom have severe depression & signs that one may be suicidal and is taking interst in some dark garbage on the net. Overall still a pretty good kid, but he surely doesn't need help online to get further in a hole. The 15 year old boy is highly intelligent (whole family actually) and knows how to get around software parental controls with peer to peer, live disks, etc. There are several PCs - both windows and mac, and an X-box.

I want to set up the household with a router or similar solution that is smarter than the kid and his friends. I figure protecting the network is the most tamper proof, all-encompassing way to go. In the short term, I really want to lock that home net solid, while still allowing mom to do her facebook and the oldest to use the web for schoolwork. Dlink Securespot technology seems to be the best overall solution I have found so far. If there is something better, I'm hoping someone here can steer me to it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Seeking Xms Like Music Player?

Apr 21, 2010

I am searching for an xmms like music player. rythmbox doesn't do it for me because it organizes songs by genre and such rather than by files - I find changing tags on individual music files tiresome, and I prefer the xmms style - all music was accessed as I access all other files on my computer. Frankly I don't know how to "compile from source" and can't quite follow the instructions describing how to "compile" the original xmms. Xmms2 doesn't seem to work on my computer.

Ubuntu :: Newbie Seeking Advice On Performance Improvement?

Aug 27, 2010

every now and then my company cleans its it trash by giving away computers to its employees. this i became the owner of a p4, 2ghz compaq evo with 512 mb ram and no hard drive. i bought a 500 gb hdd, dowloaded ubuntu, created a live disk and in a matter of minutes i had a new desktop! i love it! a new computer with a new operating system set by a non-techie in 15 minutes? not even microsoft can beat that. oh, and the total cost was zero!

then i started clearing issues (mysterious crash on p4 computers solved with a patch, screen resolution solved with a new mode, not recognized microsoft webcam to be solved, connection to stora nsa to be solved, etc.). this is nothing different from what you would go through installing windows on a new computer, in fact the process seemed easier for me as there's tons of documentation and people willing 1. overall system performance, mostly while browsing seems low. could it be the 512 mb of memory? would it improve its performance to jump to 1 or 2 gb? or it's just the processor that's too slow and not all the memory in the world would make it faster? while we're at it, is it reasonable to expect good performance on ubuntu 10.4 on a p4 2.0 ghz? (my notebook, a 2 ghz core duo runs faster on xp, but it has 3 gb memory, so i guess memory would help...).

2. choppy videos and other video, both in partial and full screen modes. again, would more ram help? updating drivers? updating flash? (i think it's all updated, but i'll retry...). or is my bottleneck in the processor? 3. my computer has an extra video card, but it's disconnected. i'm not sure about brand or model or even whether this would be an improvement on the on-board card. should i plug it and see what happens? would a better video card improve my performance?

simplifying, this is a computer for me to play and for my baby boy to pound at the keyboard. if i were to spend little money on it, what's the best investment, memory or a new video board? (i think i know the answer, memory). i don't want to extrapolate too much from my windows experience because this is a new os, but i think i would go for extra memory. if memory were the solution to all my problems... how much memory? should i go for an additional gb? full 2 gb? 3? what about buying a 1 gb card and plugging it side by side with the existing 512 mb? would 1.5 gb be enough?

Ubuntu Networking :: Seeking Home LAN Sharing & Interaction

Dec 27, 2010

I have several linux laptops and a desktop-server running Ubuntu Lucid. I also have Android(tm) and iPhone(tm) devices. All of these connect to my at-home LAN using wireless or wired ethernet through my home-LAN router+gateway and on through the cable modem. In addition, printers are network capable and deployed on the same at-home LAN. All of that works.

Now I want these various and several computers to share files and services (web, print, media) with each other and interact with each other on this same at-home LAN. Can someone point me to a HOWTO or similar application notes that discuss what I need to do? Since all of the at-home LAN devices use DHCP and get dynamic IP addresses, any /etc/hosts files that I create stop working when leases renew. I can configure "fixed IP address" settings, but then wifi roaming is a royal pain in the anatomy -- at least the ways I know how to do this.

I can use the router+gateway to give a specific IP address to each hardware (MAC) address, but then when folks visit it is irksome to setup so that we might give or get the odd file or they might print the odd document. I vaguely remember that there was a way to generate dynamic "local network" host names or similar attached to dynamic "local network" IP addresses all under the control of DHCP-server and supporting utilities. I'm dashed if I can find anything about that other than really antique details. Once folks stop laughing at what I'm certain is a totally noob question, I hope that there is a solid HOWTO that just works out there and that some kind soul will tell me where to find it. I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered in the past. One must know enough to know what to search for and get meaningful results. ~~~0;-/

Fedora :: Seeking Working ITunes Alternative?

Jun 9, 2011

i have an iPhone 4 - white 32GB.

I run Fedora 14-64bit.

(I also have a win XP pro installation on my machine - but no dual-boot)

I would very much like to be able to transfer music to my iPhone, from my linux-fedora, which the iPod device on the iPhone is able to see...

I have successfully transferred several "libgpod-something.mp3" files to my iPhone, but I can't play them on my iPhone.

I have tried the following software:

Rhythmbox (came with Fedora 14), here i am able to see the content of my iPhone, and transfer libgpod files. But I cannot see any music folder under the iPhone icon. So I just drag and drop .mp3 files to iPhone. iPhone can't see them.

Banshee (newest available version installed with add/remove programs), here I'm also able to see the content of the iPhone, and I can see a music folder icon under the iPhone icon, but I can't drag and drop to the music folder, but I can drag and drop to the iPhone icon, and the files gets transferred, but again iPhone can't see them. But I can play the transferred files from Banshee...

Gtkpod (newest available version installed with add/remove programs), is largely the same as Rhythmbox, but i get a warning that says: Extended info will not be used, when the iPhone is mounted. There is no music folder icon, but only a poscast icon, under the iPhone icon. And again, I'm able to transfer files to the iPhone, that my iPhone can't see...

In Gtkpod, there is no option for the white iPhone 4, so I've used the "xC605" profile, which is for the black iPhone 4, 32GB.

I'm also able to see content of my iPhone with nautilus. I discovered that the linux software I'm using, are converting the .mp3 files into "libgpod" files, but iTunes(transferred with WinXP) is converting the .mp3 files into "XXXX.mp3" files (X= is for random letters).

Is this significant?

I've also just updated libimobiledevice with "libimobiledevice-1.0.6-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm", but my iPhone still can't see any of the linux transferred files. Only the iTunes transferred files.

Believe me I've tried and tried for a week now. I've searched a lot, but most of the hits in my search, were for Ubuntu...

My iPhone is not jailbroken.

Am I missing something here, is my iPhone 4 supposed to be jailbroken to work with the above mentioned software?

General :: Seeking Distro With Specific Parameters

Feb 11, 2010

This is a WHAT I WANTAND NEED IN A LINUX DISTRO, not a your preference request. Fairly literate with Windows XP, but would like to find a Linux Distro with specific features. Computer used for music (over 14k mp3, ogg Vorbis, etc files) and burning musical learning tracks (I'm a barbershopper) as well as simple surfing and email. Not a gamer. Older Computer: PC with 1.4 GHz Athlon partitioned 320 Gig HD (Windows XP and a Linux Distro??) Only have CD-ROM, cannot download & burn iso DVD's or upload from them. (Can do CD's) Do have a 1 TG Verbatum external HD and a newer computer with a dvd recorder/player
So:

1) MUSTt have a distro that doesn't require a DVD for installation.

2)MUST be able to "update" rather than re-install subsequent releases ( which require backing up files, etc)

3) Like the description of Linux Mint Helena, but it requires installation from a DVD and a re-install..

4) Free distro since I'm learning and trying out different OS's and really resent the increasing cost of Windows OS's as well as the complexity and problems with Windows. I've found that UBUNTU 9.10 doesn't like me. I am very comfortable with LINUX MINT HELENA.

Software :: Seeking Advice On Finding The Right Window Manager?

Apr 21, 2010

I have been running GNU/Linux for quite a few years, and over that time have tried many different looks. I have never seemed to find the `right' one for me, however.

When I first started, I ran GNOME/Enlightenment, straight out of the box. I played with themes a little and liked it, but had not yet learned about the breadth of choice out there. Over time, mainly due to memory issues, I gradually disabled features. I ran this combo for probably three years in the end, with a minor dabble in KDE along the way. I felt like a change. I decided to try fvwm. I hated it! It did teach me something important, however; I did not need a Desktop. I had not realised before now that I never used any of the features of a Desktop. I also learned that my system ran a lot faster without one. I have never looked back.

After a short stint with FVWM, I decided to see if you could have a window manager that looked good. I experimented with several, including IceWM, but finally fell in love with WindowMaker. It looked nice and was not loaded with features I did not use. I ran it for several years before growing bored and moving on. This time, I experimented with other low-resource options, such as Blackbox, Openbox and, finally, Fluxbox. Fluxbox was my new `best thing' for a couple of years, though I quickly found myself getting rid of half its features (tabs, etc), before I found myself being driven mad by the sheer fact it was so minimalist: I wanted more bling I went on another journey where I experimented with the likes of Sawfish and Metacity, before finally settling on Enlightment again. This was fairly short lived, however, and I soon found myself back on WindowMaker. I have continued to use WindowMaker for the past four or five years. It does the job fine, but I am beginning to find it bland. After all, five years of staring at the same screen does get a little samey :P I have just bought myself a new, flashy, wiz-bang system and it has a clean install of Debian Lenny on it. I feel it is time for a new look.

Over the years, I have learned a few things about my preferences. I hate tiling window managers with a passion --- they look cluttered to me. I do not like toolbars or start buttons, and hate the concept of a desktop with icons all over it. In WindowMaker, I hate the clip beyond using it as a way to prevent my applications for leaving those horrid icons down the bottom of my screen. On the Windows system I use at work I also have the taskbar auto-hide, so I guess I do not like anything down the bottom of the screen. I like the dock, but the only docapps I really use are the clock and volume control (which do not really have to be on a dock); I would be happier if these could auto-hide and I just have to mouse-over to get them when I want them, allowing more real estate for the applications themselves. I am lazy when it comes to making themes --- I can do it, but prefer not to --- so I want a good selection from the community I can take from. Virtual desktops are a must, but I do not care for pagers (I just disable them when they are available). I also like it when I can configure which virtual desktop an application opens too, especially if it remembers the window's dimensions (so I do not have to keep resizing). Shading windows is also something I like.

Software :: Seeking Tools To Process Email Files?

Where can I find software that will me format, organize, store, and retrieve email messages for long term archives? I'd like to collect all of each thread together with any of the relevant attachments. I'd like something that is searchable. I'd like something that is "pretty print-able" -- PDF or similar -- should I want to share an historical thread with others. I suspect there are commercial-grade, "compliance oriented" application suites for message and document storage.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Freezes Randomly When Seeking Or When Opening A Subsequent Media File

Jun 17, 2010

If I start skipping through a movie or song that's playing, sometimes the program will totally freeze. It stops playing audio and video altogether. Similarly, if for instance I'm listening to a music playlist, often times when VLC skips to the next track it stops playing audio, but continues through the track like it's still playing. Once it reaches the end of the first track it had a problem with, it freezes altogether and I have to close the program. In fact, the program stays running even after I "x" out of it, and I have to kill the process in system monitor and restart VLC in order to restore functionality. This happens quite often (as in, a few times a day), and as I'm sure you can imagine, this gets quite annoying, lol.

I've looked in the various logs in Log Viewer, but I don't see any obvious problems. There are no error messages pertaining to VLC, or audio or video output so far as I can tell. I've also tried reinstalling VLC to no avail. I think the next thing I'll try is to remove it completely first, and then reinstall it....but if that doesn't work, is there anything else you guys think I should be looking at? Lucid is the first Ubuntu release that's worked well for me (9.04 and 9.10 had serious issues on my machine) so I'd like not to revert back to an older release just for VLC if at all possible.

Software :: Seeking Advice For Using An IPod Touch With Debian Lenny?

I am running Debian Lenny with xfce4. I just bought a used iPod Touch (1st gen) yesterday (4/8/10). Dropbox works great, easy way to transfer files. My yahoo mail account also works very well.

Gtkpod works great with my iPod Shuffle, but does not seem to work with the iTouch. My PC does not seem to automatically mount the iTouch. Any thoughts on iFuse, or Floola? Or would I be better off trying to run iTunes under Wine?

I have an XP laptop with iTunes installed, maybe I should just use that to sync music, and my Yahoo contacts? I would also like to sync to my yahoo calendar, but I know of no way to that - maybe I could sync my yahoo calendar to google calendar, and use Floola to sync to the iTouch?

Software :: Seeking 'tiny Text' Page Thumbnail Utility

Jan 20, 2010

Can anyone help me with accomplishing the following: software writes to STDOUT --> filter --> PDF or PS "tiny text" thunbnail. Where "label" means something that fits on a biz card or smaller and remains readable. Here is an example,I want a "paper label" for data DVD media, or to include in the case with a carry-around USB drive.I can make content with ls -lh and similar utils with some post processing, but the resulting text file prints too large.A biz card has a similar form factor to a letter page only much smaller, so I need a filter of some sort.Process the text into postscript(ps) or PDF "tiny text" page thumbnail.Print this thumbnail label and store it with the media.I can also use the online page thumbnails as index into an archive or catalog.

Can some TEXT--TO--PS or TEXT--TO--PDF expert help work out how to accomplish this sort of thing? What do most people do about keeping an index or catalog of offline media (CD, DVD, USB drive) contents? (I know that "don't bother" is a popular option.)

Ubuntu :: Smart Webcam Works On 10.04?

Jul 31, 2010

From time to time I have seen messages asking if their new device works on Ubuntu. This is to advise that I recently purchased a "Smart Webcam" brand inexpensive webcam at a local U.S. building products chain. Strange place to find such a thing but it was very low priced so I thought "why not give it a try". As it turned out, it works with my 10.04 install. Shows up ok on Ekiga and in gstreamer-properties in terminal. The video image quality is not as good as some but is suitable for casual use.

The microphone is brought out via a "Y" off the USB cable and ends in a 1/8" audio plug that will plug into a sound input port. I have not tried the mic but it should work. There is almost no documentation provided. Lastly, I have no connection with either the manufacture or the store. Just thought someone might be considering one of these and wondering it would work in Ubuntu. It does for me.

Ubuntu :: KDE 'smart' Widget Arrangement

Sep 19, 2010

Kubuntu 10.04 x86. I've got a working triple monitor arrangement, separate X displays tied together via xinerama, which is all well and good (within the limits of xinerama, anyway; I long for the day when spanning desktop space, multiple monitors on multiple adapters, and X compositing can all live in harmony...) except for how KDE handles widgets. Love KDE, haven't had a second thought since switching from Gnome earlier this year, except for this one reach-for-the-shotgun issue.I like to have whatever I'm working on presently on my center monitor, my e-mail open on my right monitor, and various apps (torrent client, IM client, and a sort of 'status display' of arranged desktop widgets) on the left. KDE, on the other hand, does not like things this way.

KDE, it appears, has pretensions at being a GUI designer; it won't let me arrange widgets on my desktop the way I want to position them. If I put one in the top left corner, it'll snap into place. OK, fine; if I put another widget right below that first one, it automatically indents both of them, usually one in further than the other. Adding additional widgets to the arrangement usually but not always causes KDE to keep indenting - it's not stair-step bad, but it's obvious things don't line up which makes it visually distracting. It seemingly-randomly decides that I can't put a widget in a particular location on the screen and snaps it back to the size and location it was in when it first appeared on the screen (or before I moved it, if it was already there). It's not an overlap-detection problem; sometimes it's perfectly OK with me overlapping widgets, sometimes it won't even allow widgets to be within some apparently-randomly-chosen number of pixels of one or more of the widgets already on-screen. Sometimes it'll regard an aligned cluster of widgets as a single entity and snap to edges... with no rhyme or reason as to which clusters and which edges. When working with widgets in close proximity to each other, the 'edge-bars' that contain the buttons with which one can drag and manipulate the widgets; again, with little-to-no discernible pattern, sometimes they appear over the widget next to it, sometimes underneath the widget next to it (making the edge-bar completely useless), sometimes clicking the widget brings its edge-bar to the foreground, sometimes the widget needs to be dragged to a different part of the desktop or a different monitor then re-positioned in the cluster for the edge-bar to be in the foreground, sometimes the widget has to be removed and re-added to get the edge-bar into the foreground. When I rebooted just now, my widgets were randomly scattered across the desktop, despite having had "Lock Widgets" turned on throughout (since a few days ago, actually; the last time I had to re-re-re-rearrange things).Basically, from what I can tell from several months of observation, KDE has some sort of automatic widget arranging 'feature' which a) doesn't work properly and b) has no bloody off switch. All this makes what should be the simple, five-minute task of resizing and lining up some widgets by hand into an hour-long test of the elasticity of my vascular system. I'm fine with there being new or experimental or even buggy features in my GUI... so long as I can turn them off when I need to.

I've done the requisite googling and have come up empty. I've looked everywhere in the GUI I can think of, but no luck. I don't yet know enough about KDE to know where to look in the conf files to hack around it by hand. Could someone please tell me how to dike out or simply turn off this blitheringly-stupid widget auto-positioning drunken &*#^$*@#%$^&% wart so that I, the human, can put things where I want them on the screen? It's also baffling that I can only resize a Plasma widget up and away from its edge-bar when most every other window in most every other environment I've ever seen, including KDE, will let you resize by dragging any border in any direction. Big. Step. Backward. If anybody knows a way to fix this I would be most interested in hearing it, but I'll make do if given a way to turn off what I've come to think of as KDE's "layout critic mode".

Ubuntu :: SMART Status Suddenly Unsupported?

I downloaded and installed the updates using the graphical Update Manager found in System->Administration

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and my kernel is listed as 2.6.32-25-generic. I haven't installed any new hardware whatsoever; my hard disk drive is the same as it has always been. When I go through System->Administration->Disk Utility, then view my hard drive, the line: SMART Status: reads with a grey circle and then "Not Supported" I am able to run the Benchmark application from Disk Utility and it completes without problem. This happened to me where I was unable to view SMART data after automatic updates involving the kernel when I was using Ubuntu 9.10.

However very time I tried to get Thunderbird to include sub-folders from my different accounts, the settings would reset itself - but now I think I might have found a fix:In your Thunderbird folder find the folder called 'smart mailboxes'.Right-click the file 'Inbox.msf' and select 'Properties' (I think it's called this i'm on a Danish system)Go to the 'Rights' section (again this is what I think it's called) Set your own rights to 'read' only, exit Open Thunderbird Right-click the Smart folders Inbox and select 'Properties'.Choose the folders you want to include, remember to check 'Match all messages'

rhg@rhg-laptop:~$ sudo parted /dev/sdb
rhg@rhg-laptop:~$ sudo gpart /dev/sdb
Floating point exception
rhg@rhg-laptop:~$

When I run Test Disk:
Test Disk 6.11, Data Recovery Utility, April 2009

Select a media (use Arrow keys, then press Enter):
Disk /dev/sda - 160 GB / 149 GiB - ATA ST9160310AS

It only recognizes the hdd in my Asus. So if the Ubuntu Disk utility can see the drive how to I get these tools to see it? I know for a fact the OS on the external hdd is Ubuntu 9.04 ext3 because I set this system up for my daughter. The gpu chip melted onto her HP motherboard and crashed her system. Now to add more excitement to this puzzle, the external hdd does have the Captain Hook and the Aligator loud Tick Tock sound when you first plug it in so the hdd is not the healthiest either.
