Ubuntu Security :: Firefox Security Updates For 8.04 LTS?

Apr 8, 2010

Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.

Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?

I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.

Fedora Security :: Still No Security Patched Firefox 3.5.1 In Yum / Get That?

Jul 18, 2009

Firefox 3.5 has a critical java script vulnerability as noted in the recent news. I had to manually update to 3.5.1 using the mozilla tarball because there's still no Firefox 3.5.1 in Fedora Updates or even Fedora Updates Testing repositories. Is this normal? I didn't want to resort to using the mozilla one because now I can't use flash (my system is 64 bit and mozilla only seems to offer a 32bit tar file of Firefox) and having two Firefoxs means dealing with the ProfileManager, separate bookmarks and so on.

I'm trying to find out if I'm just looking in the wrong place, I tried the normal mirrors for "updates" for Fedora 11 and then updates-testing and also the baseurl for "updates" to get rid of the mirror update delay. None of them seem to have 3.5.1 ?

Ubuntu :: Live CD With Adobe Flash Installed Working With Firefox

Jan 12, 2010

I need a Live CD that has Adobe Flash installed working with Firefox. I need the Live CD for my vacation so I can use it to book hotel rooms using the live cd on public Windows pcs which are probably infested with all sorts of nasty things. Using my credit card with IE on those machines is out of the question. My worry is keyloggers and other things that can copy my credit card info.

Is it possible to install Adobe Flash on a live cd or is there a workaround? Should I use a different approach? I've heard of using firefox on a usb flash disc but not in any details. I'm not bringing my own laptop. In that case I wouldn't have a problem, I guess. I have to use machines in hotel business centers or internet cafees.

Ubuntu :: Start Live Timing Caused Firefox To Become Unresponsive?

May 9, 2010

Running a clean install of Lucid 64, I have a problem with the Firefox Java plugin with the "Live Timing" feature of the www,formula1.com site. Live Timing is an applet they provide that displays sector and lap time information for races, practice and qualifying sessions. It was working fine under Karmic 32 but no luck so far with Lucid 64.

Initially trying to start Live Timing caused Firefox to become unresponsive, I saw that the Java plugin being used was the IcedTea one, which I have heard can be a bit flakey. (Not sure what I was using under Karmic BTW).

I notice that the Sun proprietary Java stuff is installed - I presume when I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. So I disabled the IcedTea plugin in Firefox and tried to use the Sun Java Moz plugin by creating a symlink to

Code:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
in

Code:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Firefox then lists the Sun proprietary plugin under addons - plugins but it doesn't actually seem to do anything, as I just get an empty Window with the Live Timing Applet.

Ubuntu :: Live Space Font Squeezed In Firefox/Opera

I'm on Lucid.I don't know if this is a problem from the Windows Live space itself. But since a while ago, all the English text on Windows Live space are squeezed horizontally into little stems and thus illegible. It happens only to Firefox and Opera on Ubuntu (lucid in my case).I compared it with Firefox and Opera on Windows. They both work fine.

Ubuntu Security :: Make Live CD Of System

May 3, 2011

I got BT's repo's set and ready to install, tho I haven't installed them all just yet cause I not wanna crash the system, so I guess what I am asking has anyone sucecfully done this and what are the specific risks here. I have uploaded crunch and that works fine if I do it manually from the command line. the kernal seems to be update-able as well to BT's Kernal, I am not sure if I should do this or not in fear it might crash the Ubuntu system somehow. I guess what I might do next is install everything but the Kernal and install the executable links to the drop down menu by hand per the menu structure.

What I would ideally want is to have all the functionality of BT in Ubuntu which is pretty close to where I am at. Also, when I am done I want to make a live CD of this system so that I not have to do this ever again as it is very time consuming. What program would be used for that? Would any of my user data transfere? I don't want my user data to be transferred to the live CD just the raw system data etc. Anyone done this and would like to chat via skype? that would be best, but I'll take any help I can get at this point. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for all this.

Ubuntu Security :: Is Live Cd Totally Secure From Intrusion?

Mar 11, 2010

Is an ubuntu live cd totally secure from intrusion? Stated another way, even if someone knows my ip address, can the live cd environment be hacked into in any way so that another could monitor what I am doing on my computer? From my understanding the live cd is read only, so that would prevent anything malicious being installed on it. I am curious if there are other ways a box running a live cd could be tapped into.

Ubuntu Security :: Secure Live CD Or USB Thumb Drive?

Oct 3, 2010

Have not found this elsewhere so here goes.

I had a friend ask how he could do his electronic banking without a chance of any information being left on his computer once he is done.

I thought of a Ubuntu live CD but have seen the HD activity light flashing when using one. That leads me to believe that some kind of use is made of the HD and that makes a live CD questionable. He wants no information on the HD even in unassigned sectors.

Maybe, better yet would be a USB thumb drive that runs Ubuntu or another distribution that will not use the HD or even require that one be in the computer. A plus with a thumb drive would be that it would only be available on the computer when it is being used so it could contain passwords etc. Of course, it would have to be removed when not in use.

Fedora Installation :: F13 Live CD Terminal Pings But Firefox Will Not Connect

Aug 2, 2010

Due to my problem getting F13 installed on my main desktop PC I thought I'd give the live CD a go in an old laptop:

Toshiba Satellite 1400-103, 512 MB RAM

This time I at least got to the desktop, however firefox will not connect to any website (and I've tried dozens)

However if i open up a terminal I can ping the websites that were not connecting, e.g.

Code:

So it does not appear to be a DNS problem (and other win boxes on my router connect fine)

Is it even worth proceeding with the F13 install at this stage?

Security :: Is Live CD Safest Thing For Doing B*nking?

Want to know if using a live CD, say Knoppix, gives a good level of protection when moving money about? I am very unsophisticated on the subject of security. This question has been addressed before on this site Code:if you have enough RAM you can ignore your local disks all together, and avoid the security risk of a swap file
How you do that then?Perhaps it would be better to use an operating system inside the software computer, virtual box, that only ever gets used for this b*nking purpose?

But I didn`t install or change anything (extentions or add-ons) in firefox. I acrually didn`t change anything in system and now firefox starts up with those adverts. In settings of firefox I have "show last opened pages". Of course I didn`t close ever my firefox with a couple of adverts. And it does only after reboot. So, if I close it now and open again it will show the last pages. But after reboot ... Well, if I saw something like that in windows I`d think that there is a virus or something else like adverts-virus but I`m in kubuntu. Kubuntu 10.04.
