Security :: Is Firewall Needed For Live CD With Dialup Internet
Feb 3, 2010
Is there any point to running a personal firewall when using a linux live CD or DVD with a dialup internet connection? My chief concern is compromise of the underlying Windows installation. I do not need corporate-grade security.

I get all my traffic from my router, as this computer seldom moves. So is there a use for a firewall?I am not sure, because when I scan my IP address with nmap, no matter what the changes I make in the firewall, it is always the same scan...cannot fingerprint OS...and all closed ports. The all closed ports thing only changes when i torrent, then i get a wide open port.

I wanted to know if there was a firewall program out there that can open specific ports when a program/process is run and disable the ports again when the program is closed.

What should I do to keep important files on my computer from being uploaded to the internet? Don't I need an outbound firewall to prevent this?
What causes my computer to send an outbound request to the internet that would result in files being uploaded from my computer onto the internet? I'm afraid to put anything of importance (like reports that I've written for work) onto a computer with internet access because I don't want them to be uploaded to the internet. I wouldn't upload them on purpose obviously, but I'm afraid it would happen without my knowledge because I don't know what I'm doing.

I am new to Ubuntu and Linux. I think that I like Ubuntu, but I don't think it likes me! I can't get onto the internet with my "old fashioned" dialup that is preinstalled in my Dell Latitude. In fact I can't find any reference to a dialup modem in Ubuntu 9.10. Have done some research and it appears that my winmodem will not work with linux, but there maybe some complex way around this problem. Can it be done? I have a Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 modem.

I am wanting a computer with an external dialup modem (ppp0 modem through a com port /dev/ttys1) to act as a gateway to the internet, forwarding internet traffic through ethernet (eth0 is set to static 192.168.2.2) to a router (the router is 192.168.2.1) where it will be broadcast to other wireless computers like my laptop (192.168.2.3). I've had this setup until recently when the gateway computer (the one with the modem) died. Now I'm replacing that machine with another box and an install of Ubuntu 10.10 but so far things aren't working for me.
Success so far:I have dialup access working on the new box. Took me a while to work out the configuration for getting dialup working, though the IP address is Dynamic (or it won't stay connected), "Check carrier line" is off, and "Ignore Terminal Strings (stupid mode)" is on in order to successfully connect and stay connected to my ISP. I also had to make my normal (non-root) user "lancer" a member of the "pid" group (the reboot) in order to use gnome-ppp as non-root. The laptop (192.168.2.3) is successfully connecting to the router (192.168.2.1) as I can see the router configuration page when I type http://192.168.2.1 into the laptop's web browser. This setup is unchanged from how I had it before when this was previously working and I don't want to change how the router itself is set up. What I want is to know what to fix in the new box in order to get it connected to the router (through ethernet) and bridging the internet through.
My problem is that whenever I plug in the eth0 from the gateway (192.168.2.2) to the router (192.168.2.1), Ubuntu's automatic plug-me-in network detection kicks in and I find my dialup no longer working through some kind of IP conflict (at least that's what I think it is). Maybe I don't have the "gateway" correctly assigned? (in the gateway computer for the ethernet connection, I had it pointing to itself as I don't know what to put for "gateway IP" as that is automatic So, just to check my connection, here I am pinging google (from the gateway computer which has the dialup modem) once a dialup connection has been made.
Code:
lancer@lancer-desktop:~$ ping www.google.com
PING www.l.google.com (74.125.237.17) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 74.125.237.17: icmp_req=1 ttl=55 time=179 ms
64 bytes from 74.125.237.17: icmp_req=2 ttl=55 time=176 ms
64 bytes from 74.125.237.17: icmp_req=3 ttl=55 time=158 ms
[Code]...
What do I need to do in order to make Ubuntu of my gateway computer stay connected to my dialup but also simultaneously share an ethernet LAN to my wireless router and feed traffic to the other computers from there? I have googled this but some of the most promising instruction (e.g. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/sharing-in...in-ubuntu.html) call for packages like dnsmasq or ipmasq which seem defunct now in Ubuntu 10.10. Other pages seem to suggest dual-networks "can't be done" in Ubuntu [URL].. (what!?! I had it before my other gateway died)

For years I have used a Slax live CD on a laptop to clone internal HDDs to USB HDDs. I recently purchased a Sony VPCF136FM laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU. It apparently has USB 3.0 ports. The problem is the USB ports are dead with Slax. There is a USB devise driver available for Windows 7 from Sony but nothing for Linux operating systems. Can this driver be ported to Linux? It is an exacutable (XXX.exe). The chip for the USB Host is from Renesas Electronics (no help there, either). Where can I find a device driver to use with Slax and how would I install it?

I have a Suse11 box with 2 network cards:
I have squid as a proxy on the Suse box, and with the default firewall I have to enable masquerading to allow clients on the eth3:1-3 to send and receive mail through the Suse box. I found the Suse firewall completely inadequate (all P2P software/connections are allowed once you enable masquerading) and had to install ConfigServer Security & Firewall. In die configuration of csf I could get my way around getting smtp to work for the eth3:1-3 clients, but pop3 connections does not go through the box. I know I need to allow port 110 and 995 to masquerade of NAT (or something) and then the same for port 22

I need a person to look over and test the security of a program that I am writing. It is in its final stages so no major bugs should be in it. You have to be good in C programming, and know how encryption works. Being knowledgeable in security is a plus. Email me at <removed> or message in post if you are interested.

I tried installing F-prot's linux scanner but it doesn't seem to want to install and I am tired of messing with it.
So I am wondering if I even need it or if there is something else.
I am behind a firewall already with my router if that helps any.
I guess I am having trouble understanding why virus protection is less necessary.
Do people not write viruses for linux systems?

I have set up a user to login remotely to our Red Hat 5 server via SSH. A rule in our department firewall enables this user to login from a single static ip address. The ssh port on our server is 22. I am able to login to port 22 from locations within our department firewall. Our administrator says the firewall configuration is unchanged. The remote user had been successful logging in. But now the remote user gets a Connection Timed Out message, before being asked to authenticate by the server.
I regenerated security keys, but the remote user still gets the connection timed out message. (I can login locally with the new keys). I suspect either a firewall or an authentication problem--inclining a firewall problem. Am I correct? Is there a Linux command to check whether port 22 is available or blocked, prior even to authentication, for login from the user's remote location?

I have Ubuntu running on an old PE server. It is running Virtualbox with an instance of Ubuntu inside. The instance is there to run my honeypot.
The server box IP is192.168.1.10. The Virtualbox is bridged with it's own IP of 192.168.1.200. The honeypot daemon is listening to 192.168.1.201 with arpd.
I set up the UFW with DENY. And then enabled only the ports leading to the honeypot scripts which are abound to IP .201. I then forwarded the ports necessary to run VNC to .200.
Here is the UFW status:
buntu@ubuntu-desktop:/var/lib$ sudo ufw status
Status: active
To Action From
-- ------ ----
192.168.1.201 21/tcp ALLOW 21/tcp
192.168.1.201 4444/tcp ALLOW 4444/tcp
192.168.1.201 5544/tcp ALLOW 5544/tcp

I have a VPS (Ubuntu 8.04 server eition) and as such am stuck with using a software firewall.
i currently have UFW installed.
I would ideally like to have my firewall be a little rude, or rather just not polite. I know what i am asking will break the RFC, but i consider this ok due to the security benefits.
I would like to have my firewall
1) ignore (eg drop without responding)all packets that dont start with a syn flag
2)for all other traffic that is currently blocked, have it dropped (again drop it without responding)
If there are any other rules you can think of i would like to know them. I already have only the services i want open and the rest blocked.

I've been using Windows for quite a few years now. I loved the way how I used to set incoming/outgoing rules for my applications. But I'm having hard time doing that in Ubuntu. I tried searching for a good GUI for iptables but I need your help selecting the best. I might learn iptables someday but for the time being I will be using a nice GUI. I'm currently using GUFW, I've tried Firestarter. All I need is a firewall that would allow me to configure rules for my applications.

I have set up a Ubuntu 10.10 server. I have been using ssh tunnels to encrypt my web traffic at public wifi. I am trying to make this server as secure as posible so I enabled ufw. I allowed SSH and HTTP traffic in and denied everything else. But when I do that I can not use SSH -D because when I try to visit a webpage it does not load and I get the following.
Code:
uname@mybox:~$ channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out
^C
uname@mybox:~$ fclchannel 4: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out
^C
uname@mybox:~$ exit
logout
What do I have to do to allow ufw to allow ssh tunnels through?

I am a Linux newbie so please bear with me if I sound stupid. I was checking out how to set up a firewall for my system and landed on this webpage: [URL]. But I am so confused with how this ufw application works. What I understand is that once I set it to "default deny" it prevents unauthorized incoming connection but what does it mean when the author says to add exceptions for services I need? When do I need to do that? Also what's an SSH server?
