Ubuntu Security :: Root Unlocked - But Didn't Unlock It
Sep 7, 2010
So I was testing to see what would happen if I tried to open a root shell in recovery mode, WITHOUT having first activated the root-user account (I only installed the system two days ago). I used my ordinary password and was expecting to see something like "Invalid password" or some such message. To my surprise, I got a root prompt. Thinking that this may just be how it works with recovery mode, I tried logging out of my X session and logging back in as root, thinking (or at least hoping) that it wouldn't work. But it did.

I have an Ubuntu desktop I have set it up to connect to my MSN Messenger account Each time I boot up I get a dialogue box saying "The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer" with a space to type in my password This should NOT be asking for my password after I am into my account! I think this is a usability bug? How can I fix this?

Anyone had any experience with unlocking a LUKS encrypted root partition via ssh? It is ok to leave /boot unencrypted.
There are a few pages from google with the debians variants, archived by putting dropbear into initrd.
I like to do that with my fedora/centos remote servers, but struggle to find any resources specific to it. Anyone has any suggestions and thoughts as to what might be a suitable way forward?

I had just got Arch up and running a couple weeks back, and I was following a random user's guide (previous Ubuntu user and newb to Linux in general)-- I think it may have been a mistake. When I was configuring my iptables/ufw, I'd added a rule to iptables allowing ssh to be used from anywhere (I think so anyhow); it came up as something along the lines of 'ALLOW: IN : ANYWHERE: ssh 22' in red font on gufw.
This had been open for about a few days, and I didn't realize the security risk until I learned what ssh is. So is it likely that my system is compromised and needs a full hard drive wipe? hosts.deny remained in its default state, so wouldn't that override the iptables configuration or no? Could my router have kept any potential threats out like it has before despite the rule?

I think this counts as a security question. I didn't know where else to place this. It's really preventing me from doing some things, such as setting up the Empathy IM program for chatting and whatnot, and this default keyring really haulting any progress I can make on that front. It also pops up when I'm just booting up the laptop. My brother set the password and then forgot, so he tried all of these passwords and it would never work. It always pops back up several moments later and reiterates its question. It goes away when I click on 'Deny', but now I can't follow that same route when trying to set Empathy IM Client up. I would like to either do away with this password requirement, or just change it to something I can easily remember

When lauching gdmsetup I can't unlock it to change settings. nothing happens when clicking on "lock" button
the same problem in Ubuntu Software Center 2.0.7. nothing happens when I pull "Install"
(no authorization starts)
there are no authorization window in admin-shares too
It started when I have changed the type of ubuntu login - I have changed from gdmsetup settings from "password" to automatic authorization.
I checked the the PolicyKit Agent. It seems to working (and autostarting) with such command:
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

I have a problem where I am asked to unlock the keyring every time I use Evolution.I enter my password on the user select screen and login and have evolution save my email password but whenever I open the program it asks for the same password as I use to login. For security reasons I need to have my password requested at login but don't feel I need it for evolution as I thought my email password was enough.

I ran a test where I login a test user several times using the wrong password to see that he gets locked out after several attempts. Now that I got the test user locked out, how do I unlock the test user? I tried passwd -u <test user>, but it says passwd: Error (password not set?).

When I set up an ID in Ubuntu, I encrypted it. I did a print screen of the passphrase and put it on the desktop. I'm just learning how to use the encryption so don't fault me for putting it right on the desktop. There is no important data in this ID. Now, I went and changed my password to the account. On the next boot, I got a few error message:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/mickymouse/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 In researching these, it looks like the problem is that I changed the password but didn't update (or something) my passphrase.
I can't boot into the GUI but I have figured out how to boot to a command prompt. I don't have access to my home directory because I don't have my passphrase. Am I toast or is there a way to recover / update the passphrase?

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

I run apache on a non standard port(82).I just installed unity to play around with it and while I was playing with it I installed prixfixe through software center to edit the menus. While prixfixe was installing my computer was acting very slow which was odd, but not completely unusual.During this time I ran ps aux which showed that my apache server was taking up most of the processing power.I was about to stop my web server, but I waited just in case the web server was updating a few things (I run ampache).
My computer finished installing the software and then I ran some command with sudo (I can't remember what the command was), but it threw back some message saying "setid blabla". I restarted my computer and when I got to my gdm my normal user account did not show up. There were no accounts and the restart/shutdown buttons didn't work. Now I'm running on a livecd and checking out my apache access logs, apache error logs, and kernel logs, but nothing looks out of place..

Having read on the forums about some of the dangers of running Wireshark as root, I would like to know if anyone can suggest some alternative packet sniffers/network analyzers which will offer similar results but without the security issues. I am using Karmic Koala on a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with wireless router (firewall enabled)

Problem: When my screen saver kicks in after idle timeout and I get back to my desktop the keyboard is unresponsive in already opened applications with text fields. This happens with and without the password required after screen saver is engaged. This doesn't happen all the time and seems to be transient. It happens at least once a day, but not often.
Workaround: The mouse is still usable, so I open a terminal and hit a few keystrokes. The keyboard is now responsive and I can go back to typing in the open applications that I previously had open prior to the screen saver being engaged.

I found this on Bee's website. For more info on this exploit there are links there:[URl]..All you have to do in Fedora 13 is enter the following lines in a shell as normal user:
[Code]...
I don't think this can be considered solely an "upstream" problem, because I first tried it in Arch using the same version of glibc, and the final command causes both gnome-terminal and xterm windows to disappear.

I'm a bit worried about "too many mutexes" in my little curses-based app and would like to get confirmation/opinions that I'm doing this right. I've got an array: int nums[60] I've got 61 threads. 1-60 are doing math on the value in their array index (ie: thread1 increments nums[1], threadN increments nums[N]), then sleep(1) The 61st thread is my curses thread which does a for-loop over the array and prints out all the values to the screen, then sleep(1)
Right now, I've got 1 mutex which gets locked/unlocked each time one of the 60 threads needs to update its array-index with a new value, and the 61st thread locks the same mutex just before the for-loop beings reading the values and unlocks after ending the loop.
My questions:
A) Does the above seem OK? (I know it's ok, cause everything works right now but would like opinions on it)
B) Do I even need the mutexes since 1-60 only ever update their own index and 61 just reads?
C) If I do need the mutex protection, is there a better, more efficient way?

The Wireshark website specifically warns against running WireShark as Root....
Quote:
Administrator/root account not required!
Many Wireshark users think that Wireshark requires a root/Administrator account to work with.
That's not a good idea, as using a root account makes any exploit far more dangerous: a successful exploit will have immediate control of the whole system, compromising it completely.
First of all, most Wireshark functions can always be used with a (probably very limited) user account. In particular, the protocol dissectors which have shown most of the security related bugs do not need a root account!
Only capturing (and gathering capture interface information) may require a root account, but even that can usually be "circumvented", see CaptureSetup/CapturePrivileges for details how to do so.

Having trouble adding a regular user with ssh access on Hardy 8.04. I can ssh into root, but not into the newly created regular user with the same ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Code:
sshd_config has:
AllowGroups sshlogin
AllowUsers user root
[code]....
what could be preventing ssh login to ~user? And yes I would like to disable root ssh access, but it would be nice to be able to ssh into user first
