Ubuntu Security :: Gufw Asks For Root Access When First Starting Up?

Apr 23, 2011

I just installed gufw and was in quite a hurry. A root acces prompt came up as I started gufw for the first time, and I quickly responded with appropriate password. All I saw in this hurry was that it had something to do with the usr/share directory. So, here's my question: Does gufw require root access when first starting up

Ubuntu Security :: Actions Requiring Root Privileges Asks For Wrong User ?

May 24, 2011

In our group we use NIS and have a group set up called netadmin which is given root privileges on each machine. Each machine also has a localuser called localuser created and used during installation. When logged in as a member of netadmin, attempting any action that requires root privileges (e.g. installing software in Ubuntu Software Center) results in a prompt asking for localuser's password, not the current user's password.

Does anyone know the cause? Configuration issue or Ubuntu issue? We can get around it.

Ubuntu Security :: Gufw - Cannot See The Other Computer Files

Jan 1, 2010

VERY GREEN to Ubuntu. My setup:

1. computer A connects to the internet through usb dial up modem
2. computer A & B are wirelessly networked through an ADHOC network.
3. computer B doesnot need to connect to the internet.

I've installed the GUFW. If I enable it I can not see the other computer files. I use static IPs for both. I tried setting a rule but I get stumped were it asks for the port. I'm not all that familiar with ports.

Debian :: Running Dropbox And GUFW From Root Terminal

Jan 7, 2016

I'm brand new to Linux and perhaps foolishly jumped right into Debian (Jessie). I've managed to get Dropbox downloaded/installed/whatever the proper parlance is, but in order to access it I have to input Code: Select all~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd. When I close the root terminal, Dropbox disappears. There's no icons in the menu. Likewise with GUFW. It might be superfluous since UFW seems to be active whenever I check it through the root terminal. Is there any way to configure Dropbox to start automatically and maintain its status even if the root terminal is closed? I've looked around these forums and the internet in general and not found any similar problems. Also, I installed Spotify but whenever I click the icon nothing happens.

Ubuntu Security :: Changed From Firestarter To Gufw - Conflicts

Mar 11, 2011

Just want to stealth ports on my laptop. Had problems with firestarter when I installed in on 10.10. Set Firestater back to defaults and then dumped it with:

Code:
sudo apt-get purge firestarter
Set up Gufw to defaults and now am not sure what I am seeing with iptables.
iptables -L shows .....

Do these settings look correct for default settings for Gufw? or do I still have some problems with the old firestarter settings not being removed. All I want is all ports stealthed. I know that ping is enabled but I believe that is a default setting in ufw. Could I restore iptables to default with:

Code:
sudo iptables -F
and then enable Gufw and set default?

Ubuntu Security :: Graphical Root Access Inconsistancy?

May 25, 2010

I temporarily placed a Back in Time backup into the root partition, by running it as root. However, I couldn't get it back out on the Desktop, so I opened a terminal window and ran 'sudo nautilus', which I now know should be avoided. I couldn't bring up "Properties" of the root folder, but I was able to open it and see the backintime folders. I then clicked on root, which was in the toolbar row "< root backintime" and was able to get full access to properties. I flipped folder access to "create and delete files" for Otherter disconnecting from the network, and moved the folder to the Desktop. So, is this correct or is it inconsistent that I could open root from the toolbar and not from the folder listing when opening 'filesystem'?

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Asks For Root Password?

Nov 7, 2010

I can't use synaptic. Starting it from the gui appears to make it ask for the root password (of which there is none!). If i sudo synaptic, it starts fine with the appropriate privileges.

I ran into this problem first when I used rhythmbox for the first time. It needed to install plugins for my mp3s, but I can't authenticate into synaptic. The dialogue asks for "Password for root:", where I think it should ask for "Password for $USER:"

Why is this, and what can I do about it.

PS, This is a fresh install of 10.10. When transferring my old userfiles over from my old Karmic install I had to userdel the user I used when installing, and then create another user with the same name and details. The reasons for this escape me at the moment, and no doubt were entirely of my own making, but that's what happened. Has this got something to do with it?

Ubuntu Security :: Access To A Virtual File System For The Thermocrom Without Needing To Launch Owfs As Root?

Feb 12, 2011

I have been trying to use my DS2490 USB to serial device with a Maxim .DG1921G thermocron with owfs. It is supposed to give me access to a virtual file system for the thermocrom without needing to launch owfs as root.

OpenSUSE Install :: Start A Browser It Asks To Enter Root Password?

Sep 7, 2011

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.

The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.

Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.

Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.

I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)

Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.

Ubuntu Security :: Giving Root Permission To An Application But Without Running It As Root?

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.
