OpenSUSE :: Found Weird File In System Possibly Hacked?

Sep 13, 2010

for a while I?ve seen hundreds of attempts via ssh against my system. They finally stop and this could mean only two things my security measures are working "NOT" or they actually got in. In any case browsing around my system for suspicious changes I found a file"agent.4015" on my tmp folder. This file denies read privileges to root and I?m afraid to chmod until I know for sure what it is.

Ubuntu Security :: Access To A Virtual File System For The Thermocrom Without Needing To Launch Owfs As Root?

Feb 12, 2011

I have been trying to use my DS2490 USB to serial device with a Maxim .DG1921G thermocron with owfs. It is supposed to give me access to a virtual file system for the thermocrom without needing to launch owfs as root.

Code:
/var/log/messages gives:
Feb 8 16:22:45 norman-HP-G56-Notebook-PC kernel: [ 236.140141] usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2[code]....

but if ds2490 module is loaded it works when run sudo.It seems from this that it is a lack of permissions to USB but I have tried all the methods on at http://owfs.org/index.php?page=udev etc. to overcome this and a few others but none work.I am running Ubuntu 10.10 kernel 2.6.35-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP

Ubuntu Security :: Giving Root Permission To An Application But Without Running It As Root?

Jan 20, 2011

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

Ubuntu :: Curl -K Command Outputs Weird Symbols Instead Of Downloading URL From File?

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04. I have read around about how to use curl to download a list of URLs from a text file, and everyone says to use

Fedora :: Weird Hard Drive / File System Permissions

Nov 29, 2009

I've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

Fedora Security :: Become Root Without Root Password?

I found this on Bee's website. For more info on this exploit there are links there:[URl]..All you have to do in Fedora 13 is enter the following lines in a shell as normal user:

I don't think this can be considered solely an "upstream" problem, because I first tried it in Arch using the same version of glibc, and the final command causes both gnome-terminal and xterm windows to disappear.

Ubuntu :: Delete 'root' And 'lost+found' Directories?

Sep 23, 2010

I discovered two folders marked with a cross in my root:

- root
- lost+found

And when I'm trying to reinstall a newer version of Netbeans, 6.9.1. it claims that there is already something running in 'root folder "The installer lock file exists at /root/.nbifile/.nbillock"

The question is - is those folders are needed for Ubuntu working? -If not how to delete them? And one more question - how to delete a programme from the 'Applcations-Programming'? I tried to do that via 'System-Preferencies-Main Menu' and tried to delete a previous version of Netbeans, but it didn't work, - nothing happens, the previous version is still there, so I have two ones - 6.9.1 and 6.9.

Ubuntu Security :: Ssh Keys Can't Be Found

Sep 29, 2010

Scenario 1. I am doing this from /home/deploy directory I am trying to set up ssh with github for capistrano deployment. this has been an absolute nightmare. when I do ssh git@github.com as the deploy account I get Permission denied (publickey). so may be the key is not being found, so If I do a ssh-add /home/deploy/.ssh/id_rsa Could not open a connection to your authentication agent. (i did verify that the ssh-agent was running) If I do exec ssh-agent bash and then repeat the ssh-add then the key does get added and I can ssh into github. Now I exit from the ssh connection to my server and ssh back in and I can't ssh into github anymore! Scenario 2 if I login to my remote server and then cd into my .ssh directory and ssh into github then it all works fine I guess there is a problem with locating the key and for some reason the agent isn't funcitoning correctly.
