In Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, when I click a disk in the left panel of Nautilus for the first time, the disks are getting mounted without asking a root password. This was not in the case for the previous versions of Ubuntu. how can I turn this feature on in Lucid.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my usb disks, on opensuse 11.2. USB disks only mount the first time after booting.
The scenario is, I boot, then I plug a usb disk. It mounts properly and I can use it. After I unmount it and unplug the disk, I try to plug it in and it doesn't mount. And none of my other usb disks will mount as well.
The only workaround is to reboot.
I checked /var/log/messages, and the disk is being detected, it's just not being mounted.
I am trying to give another user the ability to mount any hard disk by using either the Places menu or the Palimpsest disk utility. Currently whenever you try to do either of these, it immediately asks for root password, even though the logged in user has sudo priveliges to mount disks.
I have modified the sudoers file and given them access to STORAGE and other needed commands. The account CAN mount using the mount command in terminal, but I want to allow them GUI use. From my reseach it looks like Fedora is using DeviceKit but I'm not too familiar with how it works. What do I need to allow non-root users to mount disks in the GUI?
I am surprised (from the searches I carried out on the net) that no one seems to have considered this danger so far as I can see...I'm a little concerned about the implications on security for algorithms that opaquely shift data blocks around on disks to even-out surface wear rates.In the good old days, if I wanted to wipe a file that documented my struggle to give up frosted strawberry donuts (for example) I knew where that file started on the disk and how long it was and could thus instruct the OS to wipe it with complete confidence.
Nowadays, however, with increasingly sophisticated use being made of W-L techniques and fancy, journaling file systems that separate meta-data from file content and whatnot and so forth, how can I still be sure that when I try to overwrite a personal and private file, that i AM actually doing precisely THAT, and not just nuking some virtual image of the thing which in reality remains preserved elsewhere on the disk?
I'm not sure how to do this. I checked the hard drive preferences and looked through the forums... I don't want to manually mount my hard drives(s) every time I boot up just to access my music and wallpapers.

What are the advantages/ disadvantages, and why does it say not recommended for daily use next to the 64 bit download? As far as I understand you can run 32 bit binaries without problems on a 64 bit install.

Lucid is automatically mounting my NTSC partitions, which is pretty convenient since I store all my media there, but I recently deleted one of the partitions and just extended the other one. Now Lucid is still trying to automatically mount the partition that no longer exists and giving me an error message every time I boot up. Not really a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but I'm wondering what I do to make it realize the partition is gone.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.
I have a database created by an older program (not Access) that I need to open and retrieve information for my business. The manufacturer put a password on there so that only it's program could open it. I do not use that program, but it has information I need. Is there a way to find that password or circumvent the password altogether?

Or to connect to the internet (I use mobile broadband) I have to authenticate, also if I have to install something from synaptics I have to authenticate. sudo mount -t cifs //tech1/e /mnt/tech1
it asks for a password. There is no password.
I was wondering if there is a way to mount a network CIFS share manually to allow it to prompt for password. I've been Googling around and found a couple options. One was to store your credentials in a file and then add the fstab entry to look at the file. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of storing my credentials in a plain text file though, even if I put file permissions on it.Is there a way to mount the share so that it prompts for credentials. The share isn't always online so I want to mount it manually.

Unfortunately this is not open to discussion so obvious solutions like a lvm home partition are not available to me. The issue: Users created with homedirs on the main home partition (the one created as home during the f13 install) behave as expected, but if I create them on a different partition (home9 for the sake of this example) the users are not able to login (dropped back to login screen), nor run x-apps if su -'d to in a konsole.
If I 'su - <user-on-home9>' in a konsole, I get delivered to the /home9/<user-on-home9> as expected, but x-apps fail with the error: 'cannot open display: :0'. This can be temporarily fixed with the command 'xhost +SI:localhost:<user-on-home9>', but I would rather fix it permanently at the source.
This appears to be an selinux problem from the following.The contexts of the the two rootdirs are the same
% ls -Zd /home /home9
drwxr-xr-x. root root system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 /home
drwxr-xr-x. root root system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 /home9
but when I create the users (using useradd or the gui) their respective contexts differ:
% ls -Zd /home/user5 /home9/user6

So, my questions for you selinux experts are 1) is it possible to have homedirs spread across multiple partitions with selinux, and if so, how, 2) Why, even when I manually set the dir/file contexts to match a properly functioning user5 from /home, do users from /home9 still not work (as far as login and x-apps).
Just upgraded (my Worksation) to Kernel 2.6.37, but can't mount CIFS shares with password any longer - CIFS shares without password works fine. Tried upgrading Samba (on my server), which holds the shares i'm mounting, to version 3.5.6 - but same result.

I'd like to manually mount my nfs share mount -t nfs ipaddress:/nfsshare /mnt/nfsfolder but would like to include a userid and password option via command (not via fstab), since the nfs share has different credentials than the server where I'm mounting to. What's the proper switch to include in this line?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Tango Studio installed on a usb stick which i wish to install alongside my current Maverick install. I booted up into it but when i click on the "install tango studio" icon i get asked for a password. I have searched google and i have not been able to find anything about this. It doesn't appear anywhere on their website and before someone says to ask on their forums i can't as their forums are not in english. I used start up disk creator to make the usb install but couldn't boot into it at first. I did some searching and found out that creating a usb install in maverick isn't backwards compatible. There was a simple solution which got me into the live mode, pressing tab, typing in live and then enter. I wonder if this is the reason why i am being asked for the password when i get into the live desktop? I have never had to put in a password before. I have tried a few generic passwords but no joy so i don't know what to do. Is there a default password that Ubuntu uses that would work for me so i could finally get it installed?

Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
