Ubuntu :: Samsung Laptop Disabling Touchpad On Startup

May 6, 2011

I've just installed 10.04 on a Samsung RV511 laptop. No problems and much, much better than the Windows 7 it came with. But I do have just a little niggle. I can disable the touchpad with 'modprobe -r psmouse' after I've logged in, but I would like this to happen automatically at startup. I've tried putting the above code in the home folder .bashrc, but I get this error message: FATAL: Error removing psmouse (/lib/modules/2.6.32-31-generic/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko): Operation not permitted Do I need to write a bash script file? Or how else can I get the code to run as I want?

Ubuntu :: Enabling/disabling Touchpad With Fn+F9?

Mar 29, 2011

I am having a problem using my laptop's special keys to toggle my touchpad on and off on my ASUS G73JH laptop, running Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-28-generic-pae).

First, some preliminaries:

My touchpad works just fine, but it does not respond to my laptop's special key, Fn+F9.

In /etc/acpi/events I have the following script, "asus-touchpad":

Code:
# /etc/acpi/events/asus-touchpad
# This is called when the user presses the touchpad button and calls
# /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh for further processing.

[Code].....

Ubuntu :: Disabling Touchpad Tap-Click On Login Screen?

Dec 30, 2010

I am loving my Ubuntu machine, but there's a slight annoyance that I can't seem to disable. Is there anyway to disable the tap-click on the touchpad of a laptop while on the login screen? I do not want to disable the click from the button, but rather when you gently tap it with your finger. The options for it in the Control Center doesn't seem to disable it during the login screen.

CentOS 5 :: Disabling IRQ #169 On Startup ?

Apr 8, 2011

I've run into this problem this week. The other night a power supply failed on a different system and appears to have surged the UPS which it and some other computers were plugged in to. One computer was fine, but the RAID server that is used for backups ended up with a bad disk and this "Disabling IRQ #169" message now shows up during boot, right after starting udev and setting the hostname. The system then sits there for 3-5 minutes before repeating a scroll of "/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 966: /bin/usleep: Input/output error"

I have booted with linux recovery from the CentOS DVD in order to replace the drive that was damaged. I rebuilt the raid array and all the data seems to be fine. There is another message though after "Red Hat nash version 5.1....." no raid disks and with names: "isw_bf jihdchhi_Hostname" failed to stat() /dev/mapper/isw_bf jihdchhi_Hostname

I was considering doing a complete reinstall of CentOS but if there is another solution I would much appreciate it, is it perhaps an issue with Grub not being able to find the updated array? As it is, it is impossible to boot the system except for using a live CD to do it.

Ubuntu :: Customizing Touchpad On Startup?

Feb 18, 2010

So, in the system preferences there is a setting for the laptop touchpad. I never use it and want it deactivated. Unchecking the box and setting the program as a startup app isn't doing it. So how do i go about it? Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm thinking the best way is gonna be to edit the startup command for the app from:

command: gsynaptics to command: gsynaptics + "whatever the commands would be to tab to the first item and hit space" I have NO idea what that command would be or if it's possible.

Ubuntu :: Laptop With Extra Samsung Monitor Trouble

Dec 26, 2010

I was given a Samsung SMB 2330 (TFT) monitor for Christmas. It is pretty nice and nice and big. Here is the problem: when I connect it to my laptop (Dell XPS M1530 with nVidia GeForce 8600M) I can use the Nvidia Settings Manager to view and use both screens, but on the Samsung screen there are lighter colored blurry lines that race up and down. You don't see this so much on lighter windows, but any darker color shows them clearly. This is a constant whether I set the refresh rate on "auto" or 60 kH (which is what the manufacturer says it should be).I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of this problem. I am fair to middling on my Linux experience, but this is the first time I have wrestled with dual monitors and I'd really appreciate any pointers The screen is great, but the flicker is distracting to say the least.

Debian Hardware :: Disabling Laptop Lid-close Action

Dec 17, 2011

Dell Latitude C610 laptop with Debian Squeeze.I am using the computer as a print and file server, accessing it with ssh, so I don't need the display (which is busted anyway). I want to close the lid without having the computer suspend. Could not find a way to make it happen with gnome-power-preferences or the BIOS settings. There is a script, /etc/acpi/lid.sh, that runs when the laptop lid switch changes. Part of the script is shown here:

Code: Select allgrep -q closed /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state # this is a file of 1 line like "state:   open" or presumably "state:   closed"
 if [ $? = 0 ]                               # The brackets evaluate to True when the lid is closed.
then
    if [ x$LID_SLEEP = xtrue ]; then
        [ -x /etc/acpi/sleep.sh ] && /etc/acpi/sleep.sh # i.e., if this file exists, then run it.
        exit
    fi
... there's more ...

The stuff that gets executed after the if [ #$ = 0 ] is the stuff that suspends the computer. So I just replaced the brackets with something that is certain to be false, so it will never happen:

Code: Select allif [ 1 = 2 ]
I admit this is FAR from an elegant solution, but it seems to work and it doesn't fubar the system.

Ubuntu Networking :: On Laptop (Samsung R580) Wireless Connection Drops Out

Nov 22, 2010

I've recently installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an external HDD in order to use it as a portable operating system. An issue I have is when running on my laptop (Samsung R580) the wireless connection drops out however the nm-applet still shows it's connected. If I disconnect and reconnect it keeps asking for the access password. The wireless card on the laptop is the RTL8192E (not SE!). I have used the install on a couple of other machines with different wireless cards and no problems. Linux Kernel version is 2.6.35-22-generic. I have searched around and see that the drivers are in early development. If I tried installing the windows driver via ndiswrapper would this affect the portability of the operating system?

Ubuntu :: Disable Only The Left Touchpad Button On Laptop?

Mar 23, 2010

What can I do to disable ONLY the LEFT touchpad button on my laptop? Left Click sticks by itself randomly, this causes problems when using my USB mouse (such as permanent dragging, permanent highlighting, permanent inability to left click anything, the computer is pretty much dead to me unless I try to tab around), it also causes issues with the Tap to Click, and it also causes Ubuntu to not recognize my "Left Handed" mouse button set up after boot for ONLY the touchpad. On the USB mouse, buttons work swapped.

Current solution: Left Handed Button Swap. Touch pad to click. Right touchpad button to right click. Sometimes I use my USB (which does recognize the swap). This is the 3rd install of vanilla Ubuntu (tried it just in case). That's not the issue. This is a Dell Inspiron 6000. I want to just disable the left button on ONLY the touchpad, I don't want this to affect my USB mouse. I want to keep the right button touch pad working. And of course I want my mouse to work. But, actually, my ideal is to sacrifice the left button, use Tap to Click, and use the right mouse button for right clicking. If I can't save the right click, can I disable both buttons?
