Ubuntu Networking :: On Laptop (Samsung R580) Wireless Connection Drops Out
Nov 22, 2010
I've recently installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an external HDD in order to use it as a portable operating system. An issue I have is when running on my laptop (Samsung R580) the wireless connection drops out however the nm-applet still shows it's connected. If I disconnect and reconnect it keeps asking for the access password. The wireless card on the laptop is the RTL8192E (not SE!). I have used the install on a couple of other machines with different wireless cards and no problems. Linux Kernel version is 2.6.35-22-generic. I have searched around and see that the drivers are in early development. If I tried installing the windows driver via ndiswrapper would this affect the portability of the operating system?

I just bought a samsung r580 laptop. this is the first time i've ever owned a laptop. I have owned a pc with ubuntu 8.04 installed on it and the internet worked trouble free. Now I have windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10 dual booted on my samsung r580. I used wubi to install and the internet works fine in windows but will not work in ubuntu. I have been trying to get this to work for about 5 hours now

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) from Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on my Samsung R580 laptop [URL] So far all my hardware seems to be working except the laptop's integrated camera. In 10.04 the camera worked and I could use the program "Cheese" to take photos and videos with the camera. In 10.10 I installed Cheese and tried to use my laptop's camera but it didn't work. I installed all the available updates for 10.10 but still the camera wouldn't work. The only information about the camera on the laptop's webpage is that it is a 1.3 MP Web Camera.

I'm having a really strange problem with my wifi connection on my laptop. The ethernet connection works fine and so does the wifi connection - as long as I sit within one meters range from my router! As soon as I take the laptop further away the connection drops. The router is still being found by network-manager and the signal is just below 100%, but when I try to establish a connection it fails.
I'm sitting here on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install, and I had exactly the same problem with 9.10. That time I went through a lot of different procedures, and in some strange way the problem was solved. I haven't been that lucky this time though, I've tried reinstalling network-manager, using ndiswrapper, installing the wireless backports package, tried all kinds of drivers.. nothing works.
There shouldn't be any problem with the connection itself; I've had a perfect connection downstairs but now I can't even connect if I stand two metres from the router! Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? My wireless card is Atheros AR2413. This is an example from daemon.log

I've recently bought a Samsung R580 laptop. It is now configured as a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (64bit). The wireless network functions correctly under Win7, but I have encountered problems with Ubuntu. The native drivers do not function and having identified the driver used by Win7 (net819xp.inf) that works, I have tried to install it using ndisgtk, but get the message "incorrect hardware". I have followed the ndiswrapper howto carefully without being able to get the wireless network going.

I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5. 160GB HD, 1GB RAM model. I've done a fresh install and an upgrade of 10.04 and have the same problem both ways. I am able to connect to my wireless connection but it is dropped after about 5 minutes and have to wait about the same time to reconnect. I've had to roll back to 9.10 being that I use the netbook for work and school on a daily basis.

Having struggled to get the wireless connection at least working I find it drops out after 15 minutes or so. When I check for wireless connections I can see none at all and the "Disable/Enable wireless conncection" has disappeared, the Network one is still there. I get an auto reconnection if I reboot and all is well for another 15 minutes. Is there any way i can recover the situation without a reboot? I am trying to install the hplip-3.11.5 driver for my new wireless printer, the program take a while to install and by the time it has started looking for the printer the connection has dropped out. I can't be sure but I don't think it was dropping out before I connected the printer using my wired pc. All good fun but I'd like to get it sorted so I can get the engine back in my motorbike, the sort of technology I prefer!

I just got a wireless dongle because in my house wired is not possible, but now I am getting problems. The dongle is a tp-link that turned out to be plug&play (unlike windows) and seems to work perfectly, except when the screen locks. I have tried to download overnight several times and it seems like a few minutes after the screensaver comes on or after I lock the screen, the connection is dropped. It works completely fine normally. So what changes when Ubuntu (its maverick with all updates) locks the screen? Also, when I log back in, I have to unplug the dongle and plug it back in to get it to connect again.
This is really REALLY annoying, enough to make me switch back to windows if I can only download while I'm looking at the screen.

My wireless connection drops after a while when downloading torrents. I have to reconnect manually. Current configuration is Macbook Pro 5.5 with Broadcom card and Lucid. I've tried with Transmission and KTorrent. It's not a network problem as my Win laptop works smoothly and with higher transfers rates (i.e. 1MB/s in Win vs. 300KB/s at most in Ubuntu).

I have Ubuntu command line only installed on my HTPC (it is XBMC Live installation). Kernel is 2.6.31-16-generic. My wi-fi card is AW-NE770 from AzureWave (mini-pci on Zotac Atom motherboard). I have successfully configured wireless connection to my router. Unfortunately, after short period of time connection drops. When I restart /etc/network/interfaces all goes back to normal. When connection is dropped, iwconfig shows that access point is not assigned. I have already tried installing backport drivers, removing security on the network (WEP and WPA), assigning static IP or using DHCP. Nothing works. I know it is not the router or my internet because I can be at the same time on my laptop and that works fine.

I have a Dell 1545 laptop with ubuntu 9.1 32-bit installed (the 64-bit had a bug with the wireless drivers which is why I have not used it). Initially, the laptop worked well with the wireless (a sky router with WPA security) but now, the wireless signal drops after a couple of minutes of usage. I have to reboot the laptop or sometimes reboot the router as well to regain the wireless signal. I am using the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver.
I have an older dell inspiron 6400 as well with the same OS and driver and it works perfectly without any problems for hours / days.

I have searched around but found no solution to my problem so here it goes. I can't have any sound on a recently (re)installed Slackware 13.1 64bit. Running alsaconf shows me an option of:hda-intel Nvidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller hda-intel Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition then I get an ok from ALSA but still no noise... alsactl store tells me that there are no soundcards found. I also get a notification from KDE telling me that the device HDA Intel (ALC269 analog) does not work. See attached KDE1.png

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

my wireless will connect to a well known connection but will sometimes drop the connection then tries to reconnect. Sometimes it will reconnect w/o a problem but most times it will fail and when it fails it will refuse to even recognize that same wireless connection.
If by a small chance it does recognize the network then when you click on it, it will ask you again for the password, which is already saved onto the computer. After entering the password it will try to reconnect, then fail.
Only solution is to reboot.
I was wondering if there was an easy temporary fix of just reloading the software that controls the wireless.Such as, my audio doesn't work when I boot. I need to reload the ALSA driver using sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload
Is there something specific to the wireless that I can force-reload and it will start working w/o having me reboot my PC?

This is a little problem I've been having. My internet connection right now is just my rooted android phone broadcasting a wifi signal. It works like a regular wifi connection. When I connect to it, it works fine. But if it goes for more than a minute without having any data transferred, it drops the connection til I reconnect. I can have it downloading all night and it wont go out once. But soon as I let it alone without any data xfer, its down.
My quick fix is to just keep it pinging [URL] and that mostly keeps the connection going (although it still drops occasionally). Anyone know a more permanent solution?

I am looking for information on how to set up my laptop (running ubuntu 10.04) as a wireless access point for other wireless computers, through a mobile broadband usb device. My reason for wanting to do this: i have a mobile broadband verizon usb device for connecting to the internet when a regular wifi connection is not available. however, my wife does not, and it would be nice if she could use her wifi to connect to my laptop wifi and subsequently share my mobile broadband connection. Independently, I have no problems with wireless connectivity using wifi or mobile broadband, I am simply unable to figure out how to configure the two to work together in such a way as to create a wireless access point via my laptop.

I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.

My laptop has been working fine with ubuntu 10.04, and earlier today it shut down after running out of battery. I came to use itr and discovered that the wifi icon had disappeared from the panel bar, and it won't connect to the wireless networkor via a wired connection.I have had a play around with this, tried ping -c5 google.comresult was:ping: unknown host google.comand ping -c5 4.2.2.1result: onnect:etwork is unreachable.I have other computers connecting to this network and know that it is working fine.

I got a new low power file server (Atom 330 with ion), but didn't enjoy it since.
I installed Ubuntu server 9.10 64bit.
I randomly experience connection drops. As I'm installing and testing, there are lots of ssh windows open, I transfer much data using scp from my laptop to the server (all connected to wired lan).
Connection drops are as follows: ssh windows terminate with "connection reset by peer", but not always all the ssh windows terminate. For example, I edited a mediatomb config using nano, that stayed open even with scp and all other ssh windows cut.
I also have apache2 installed because I'm running urd (a usenet download tool). It seems that when I start the deamon, connection drops. So I killed apache2 to try out but that didn't solve the problem.
I left ping run all the time, and the server is pinging back all the time, which is really strange as I thought that a connection drop means the whole network interface going down.
When this drop occurs, I have to wait 2 minutes until I can ssh back into the server.
I also installed mediatomb, but it isn't really fun to stream a video to my ps3 as it always hangs after 5 to 10 minutes.

I've had a computer running Ubuntu connected to my TV for a few weeks now, but as of yesterday, I can't get it to keep a connection to the Internet. Everything works well for an hour or so after a reboot, but then no WAN connections work. When this happens, no sites load in Firefox or Chrome, I can't ping Google, I can't SSH to the box from work, and none of the pages I have running on apache load from remote computers. However, all local area connections seem to work fine. SSH from within my LAN takes much longer than usual, but it does still connect.

In order to get my shares working I first have to connect to the windows shares from the Ubuntu machine. Then I can connect to the Samba shares from the windows machine. If I don't continue to use the shares. It'll drop the connection and I have to unmount the windows shares and start the process over. The wireless network still shows as being connected but I get an error on the windows machine if I try to connect. I've Googled this and it appears to be a Windows problem. I know this is a ubuntu forum but thought I'd ask for any info. I believe that this is also what is giving me shared printer issues as well.

I could not find a solution to this problem anywhere. I use a ubuntu server to play (stream) mp3s and movies to other computers on my network. It works most of the time, but sometimes in the middle of a movie or a song it will drop/hiccup--saying it is "not reachable". I am not overtasking the server at all, and merely playing an mp3 that takes up less than 10% of the bandwidth, yet it drops it for a split second.
I have a WRT160N router (DD-WRT of course) with 4 clients connected (2 of which are wired). The ubuntu server is connected via ethernet and all machines have the same issue. It can't be the router because another Windows machine works just fine for streaming these files. I just can't understand how it can lose connection for a second or so. It may just be the file-system or some service that is hiccuping, but I have no idea...

I have a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I use it for mysql as well as samba file sharing across 10 computers. It had been working out great. I only ever needed to restart after I would install updates and to sort of thing. Starting this week however, it has started kicking all the computers off of both mysql and the samba shares every few minutes. It is very strange. The mysql connection can be restored just by closing the database and reopening it. The file shares are only a problem if you try to access them though a program other than your file browser (e.g. save a file you are working on in word to the server). The server never shuts down and all services can be reconnected immediately. It is very strange. I do believe that the server installed some automatic updates at the beginning of this week when this all started happening. I am not sure if one of the updates is causing the server to do this or not.

Hello, I've installed OpenSwan with xl2tpd on my server, and set it up for roadwarriors connecting using certificates.
My server is Debian 5.0.8, I am running xl2tpd 1.2.0, and Openswan IPsec 2.4.12, my clients are all Windows, and I am testing my setup on a Windows 7 client.
I have no problem connecting to the server, but after some time the connection drops. I removed the idle option from the ppp config but it does not make any difference.
Even when I create constant traffic with ping -t the connection drops also.
I have no problems reconnecting right away.
I have been hacking at this for a couple of days, reading every post I can find, but I have not found a solution to my problem.
Here are my configs and logs:
