I recently bought a Samsung 900x3a which is a very neat machine. However, I have some trouble trying to get ubuntu to run on it at all. Here are my symptoms / information :
- Live USB runs well
- Installation runs well
- Trying to install dual operating systems (Windows + Ubuntu)
- Installation terminates well
- If I reboot in LiveUSB, I can see my new "Ubuntu" partition with all the operating system files on it.
Does any of you have an idea of how I could possibly solve this issue without messing up my Windows environment ?

I have the samsung LED 7100, and I can't figure out how to connect it to ubuntu. The way it is supposed to work is I share one or multiple folders that are shared and I can browse them trough the tv since it is connected to my network via hard wire. In windows I do that in 1 minute, but I love Ubuntu so much better when it comes to anything else.

I have a MacBookPro5,1 laptop, and I have installed the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on it, in addition to the Mac OS X operating system. When I'm running Mac OS X, I can connect my 720p Samsung television to the computer through its mini DVI port and the computer will go into a mode that will display on the television.
However, when I'm running Fedora and connect the television nothing happens. What can be done to allow the laptop to display on the television when it is using Fedora?

I have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.

I recently used scalpel to recover .doc files. I only need to find just one file, but scalpel retrieved thousands and thousands of them, all titled after a sequence of numbers. If I could only search within them all for a single word I'd be able to identify the ones to check out vs. the duds immediately.

(4) Windows 7 is not WAN accessible.
@Office

I have been looking at Open Office calc to work the next in a series if non-linear numbers, and calc does do a very good best fit and shows the equation. Just what I want. I now want to programme this into a C routine that I am writing so that the programme will both look-up what it can from a samples database, and extend them forward where it does not have enough samples. (I'm trying to understand some correlations). My thought at present is to take the Ooo calc formula and write it into my code. Before I do so, I wonder if anyone knows of any non-linear solver routines written in C that I could just plug in? I'm trying to do a best fit from only about 6 very accurate floats which graph like a curve.

The correct 96-series nVidia drivers for 10.10 weren't issued until several months after that release. Now they do not work for 11.04 and no one on the Ubuntu forums seems to know the correct information about work arounds, I stumbled onto the X.org drivers but I do not know if I have them installed correctly or not. I am getting 1280 x 1024 at supposedly 0 Hz but probably 60Hz. It is a good work around as OC is used mostly for text editing and e-mail.

First problem is that there does not seem to be any Catalyst Control Center available for this driver. Is there one anywhere for Linux for this driver? The graphics card appears to be constantly at 99% usage at all times when simply sitting at the desktop. Is there a way to bring this down to virtually no usage like it should be at?
The display area on my monitor does not extend to the edges. In Windows, I can simply scale it to 0% to overscan in order to completely fill the screen inside the Catalyst Control Center; in Linux, I have been unable to do so with a monitor. Is there any way to scale the display area to completely fill my screen?

Trying to get this working via wireless connction with 11.04. So far I've managed to install (correctly I think) hplip-3.11.5.run. If I select what I think is the correct option, when it gets to the configuration proceedure, it asked me to temporarily connect via usb. However it doesn't see the usb connection when prompted so I can't complete the configuration. If I configure as a usb printer, the first option, it does see the connection and it prints a test page fine. Tried the other options as well but no joy. Wireless connection to windows laptop and main windows pc is working fine.

I got a new Sony F series laptop and struggled thru getting the video card to work, the wireless card to work, and the volume to work on 9.10. The brightness controls have stumped me though. The screen is on full bright and the brightness controls (FN+F5 & FN+F6) make the applet display change but the actual screen brightness does not change. I have also tried the brightness applet in the panel and that also has no effect on actual screen brightness.

So Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.

This little darling will check the r/w performance of HC memory cards....in some fashion or other. As [mis-] fortune would have it, I own a failed TRANSCEND 16G SDHC SERIES 6 memory card. Posting to the HMC-150 video camera users group on the diagnosis. I really, really need some expert feedback on the interpretation of the analysis generated by the Drive Utility. Posting attached screen shots of: LS-1 Bad TRANSCEND SDHC and LS-2 GOOD TRANSCEND SDHC.

I would like to install the new Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. I first booted from usb to see how the new release behaves on my laptop(sony vaio eb3m1e). The thing that does not work as it should is that the OS can't detect the GPU which is an ATI radeon 5650, when i click the additional drivers icon in order to install the proprietary drivers I only see the "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". How can I make the OS detect the GPU?

I would like to use VIM to add something to the end of a series of lines. Ideally I could do something like add " X" (with a space before the X) to the end of lines 1-40 and 50-60 in a single command, i.e. ideally I could have a break in between where I didn't add something. If that's not possible just adding to 1-40 and 50-60 separately would work too. I would be using bufdo to do this, but my understanding is that anything you can do in vim you can use with the bufdo command.

I recently received my new multimedia laptop - an HP Dv7. I proceeded to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it and I've had no end of troubles with the sound card including, muffled sound - seemingly only coming from the LFE channel, only stereo controls in pavucontrol, failure to send sound out the HDMI port, headphones not working and not cutting of the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.
I believe that all of this will be solved if I get the appropriate driver for my card. I have searched around and sound in particular has tons of posts from many people all with slightly different problems, solutions and hardware. None of the solutions seem to be working. Also I just tried booting from the live CD and the sound is the same - no 5.1 and just muffled sound. I think my sound card is just too new and there doesn't exist a proper driver for it yet.
Here's what I get with lscpi:
Code:
% lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation Device 0be2 (rev a1)

I recently had sound 'working' as in I had to reload the alsa drivers each time I booted up my computer. After a year of giving up how to fix it, I looked it up again and was told to update my alsa drivers. I updated my drivers to version 1.0.23 and my sound was working but was still acting weird. For example, my sound would play a song, in Adobe Flash, at its highest volume even if the volume wasn't at max. I was just happy that I didn't have to reload the drivers, but this was another problem. Now, for some reason, sound just doesn't work. I've tried reloading the drivers several times and looked for a solution on these forums as well as on google. No luck. So I ask, is there anything I can do to get my sound to work?

I finally got around to setting up my HP Photosmart c4580 AIO printer today to print wirelessly so that I don't have to be tethered to it with a USB. I found there are many different ways of doing this, each with limited success. So I took a crack at it and this is how I got it to work. (Just an FYI, I don't think that it matters but I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.) Note: I have put in screen shots of the important steps. Also, I have linked at the bottom all the relevant shots. In a terminal type
Code:
hpsetup
After pushing enter a GUI will pop open call "HP Device Manager - Setup". There are four radio buttons, I selected the "Wireless/802.11 (requires a temporary USB connection and is only available for select devices)" one and then clicked Next.
Clicking Next opens a new window for Wifi Configuration. Read what it says (Which is; after configuration setup will continue, this configuration may not work, and connect your printer to your computer by a USB cable!) Now click "Next". Assuming you haven't forgotten to plug your printer into your computer (and turn it on) you will get a "Discovered Wireless Capable Devices" list with something on it. If you do not have anything listed under "Model" and "Device URI" check all your connections and the power to your printer and click refresh. If still nothing I am sorry but this setup has failed you, but if you are lucky and something shows up, click on it and then click next. You have to have wireless internet to continue. The step you are on now has you select your wireless internet connection. Find your's and click next.
Now in the next screen you have to enter in your password for your wireless internet, then push connect. Once you connect you have now just given me access to your online banking and I am withdrawing money as you read this! I'm probably just kidding! I just wanted to make sure I haven't lost you yet. But you do want to enter your password and push enter.
After you push connect you should get a little 'progress' screen. After that is done loading you will see a screen that looks like, Now on a piece of paper or something else, write down your hostname and your IP address. After you have done that unplug the USB from your computer and click finish. Now what happens next, I could not explain. But you remember earlier the wizard said that setup would continue after configuration? Yeah well it didn't for me. And here is what it looked like.
Notice no printers available to select, and even in the terminal it shows an error. Either way, we have the information that we need to finish things up outside of this 'hpsetup' wizard. So just click cancel, close the terminal, and go back to the desktop. Now on your desktop go to System>Administration>Printing That will open a window that shows your current printer profiles. Click the add button to get a screen that looks like this,
Click the plus sign + next to "Network Printer" then click on "Find Network Printer". Now on the right half of that window there is a text box labeled "host:", enter the IP address that you copied down earlier and click the button that says "Find". Once clicking "Find" , one of two things will happen; (1)It will recognize it right away, locate the driver and take you to this screen, after clicking "forward".
or (2) It will take you to a screen showing the host name and the port number. If that happens, no big deal, just click "forward" to get the above screen. Or (3) It will not recognize the IP address that you entered. If this is the case, type in the host name you copied down earlier and click find, then click "forward" to get to the above screen. Or (4) It will not be able to locate a suitable driver. If this last scenario plays out for you then I am sorry but I don't know what to do. So lets just hope that doesn't happen. Alright now that you are on the above screen. Type in a name that you would like your computer to call your printer.
Then click "Apply". Once you click "Apply" that window will close and it will take you back to your printer list. You should notice a new printer in your lineup. Also, it is asking you if you would like to print a test page. Before you pick one, double check that your USB cable is no longer plugged in to your computer from the printer. Now, clicked "No" or "Yes". I chose "No" because test printing takes up a lot of ink. Instead of the test page I just went to my gmail and printed an e-mail. And guess what?! It worked!

Basically, to save battery (extend battery life) of computer, I use these commands to shut off my dedicated graphics card:
Code:
cd acpi_call
sudo insmod acpi_call.ko
./test_off.sh
Now right now I have to do this manually. Is there some way for the system to execute these automatically when the system boots?
