I need to change the screen resolution, but there is no xorg.conf file.. Under system/preferences/screen resolution there is only 800x600 and 640x480 to choose from. I want at least 1024x780.

I need to run VirtualBox on my desktop to run a WinXP partition. I set it up and loaded it fine. Now, Windows slows down to an absolute crawl. It doesn't seem to be using a huge amount of memory in the Task Mangler.
The computer itself isn't being bogged down. I can tell that because I go back to the Linux side of things and it's running fine.
I'm left to question if my settings are correct. Can someone help me review things?
I'm using Ubuntu 7 on that machine. It's WinXP Pro that I'm loading on there.
How can I get access to my NTFS Partitions in VirtualBox running Windows XP Pro? I saw it somewhere once saying something about setting up shared files but it was confuseing and did not work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.
I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though).So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.
I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with Lubuntu. First of all I installed it on my old laptop (amd sempron 1.6GHz, 512MB ram, s3g vga) as windows seemed to slow down my system. Installation was good, but the problem is screen resolution which is only 800x600 and there is no higher res option. Laptop's native is 1024x768. I searched a lot about how to change it but there is no post for lubuntu (everything is for ubuntu, xubuntu, and doesn't seem to work in here). Beyond that isse i I feel Lubuntu is running much better than windows and I want to use it. Using Lubuntu 11.04. Let me add that when I tried Lubuntu 10.04 it didn't have this problem (all resolutions where available).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a cheap computer to use for everyday tasks. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7. The monitor I am using is a Vizio VX20L. It's native resolution is 1366X768. I have no problem with the screen resolution in Windows 7 but in Ubuntu, I am having some issues. I have the propriatary Nvidia driver installed in Ubuntu but for some reason I cannot get the screen resolution right. I am currently using a resolution of 1360x768 and the right part of my desktop is not on the screen.
I have tried to adjust the screen size using the monitor settings, but I still cannot get the whole screen to show up. If I set the resolution to Auto in the NVIDIA X Server Settings, it defaults to 1280X1024 and I can see my whole desktop, but it is streeeeetched. Here is some relevant information pertaining to my system:
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04
Integrated Video chip is NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE
The driver I'm using is NVIDIA accelerated graphic driver (version current)[Recommended]

Well I have installed lenny from netinstall, with Xfce on a virtual machine, everything runs smooth and I really like how does it work, I just have a little big problem, the resolution is too high, it is higher than the host resolution, if I have to work in the down part of the screen I have to scroll down in host, it is kinda annoying, under screen config (right click>configuration>screen config) for resolution only the default option is available. I have googled and I have found that /etc/X11/xorg.conf must be modified to use another resolution, but I'm not sure of what to change or what to do exactly.

When I use the "Install Guest Additions" it won't mount because of some error, and so I can't open it, and even if I could mount and open it *I've tried it in other distros that don't automatically install it for you* I have no idea what to use. I've tried all of the .sh, even the autorun.sh and giving it executable permissions, and it STILL doesn't work. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.
What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot.The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.
Questions:
1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?
2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.
3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?
4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??
(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)
I currently run VNC with Gnome to run VirtualBox for my VPS's, but the problem I'm facing is that occasionally, the VNC session will die.
Ubuntu - 11.04 Server Edition.
I mean, randomly just die and then through up an error (specially connection refused 10061). The problem caused by this is that after I reset the VNC session, VirtualBox will have stopped and in turn the VPS's.
Is there any way I could run VirtualBox without being dependent on VNC + Gnome? Or at least, beable to stop VNC is dying on me?
If you require any more information, just ask and I'll reply within 5 minutes.
Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.

I cannot see the programs I have downloaded when using Explorer for Windows.Ordinarily, in a WinXP only system, I just find the program to be installed and double click on it to start the automatic installation routine.In this case, I cannot see any of the .exe files used for the install.I have placed those downloaded Windows application in the same directory on my Ubuntu Box as where VirtualBox, the Sun Guest Editions and the CD Image of the Garmin Trip and Map system.I installed the Garmin system directly from and ISO of the CD I made using Brasero. run a Hamachi client in a Windows virtualbox and be able to set it up (using network bridging, maybe?) like Hamachi was running in the host itself.
I'm most definitely not a networking expert, but I thought it would be worth a try to see if anyone had any ideas. Hamachi for linux is outdated and unstable.
Also, if this isn't possible and anyone has another cross-platform zero-config VPN solution as stable as Hamachi
I have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get a converted virtual disk running in VirtualBox for the past several days. The VM begins to boot in a window but never gets past a black field. Until today the title bar would always change from "running" to "suspended" and just hang there. Now it just keeps saying "running" but never boots so I'm thinking the virtual disk may have become corrupted from repeated shutdowns without ever booting.
The User Manual at VirtualBox.org is of little help since it appears to assume you're using their packages. They also make references to utilities or scripts like "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv" that aren't even in the latest version so I think it hasn't been updated in a while.
There doesn't appear to be many hints in the Vbox.log either - couldn't find a way to get more verbose logging. Until now I'd get to this point and it wouldn't change until I shut it down:
I'm guessing the reason for the suspension was the message immediately above the notice. Now I just see the "unmapped device" message and the guest window says "running" indefinitely. I've attached copies of logs from a couple of sessions, one where it suspends itself (a vnc session) and another where it just stays running (a console session). Some googling suggested that the "unmapped device" message implies it can't find the boot drive or the boot sector on the virtual disk.
The host is normally accessed through a VNC session to a virtual console but VBox log messages indicate that it cannot determine the keyboard type when accessed this way so I now have to physically sit at the native console. If anyone knows of a way to overcome this limitation I'm all ears.
People don't usually respond to my threads so I'm basically talking to myself outloud here. I'll read it again later an maybe come up with something else to try. For now I'm going to remove all the VBox packages and re-install them, starting from scratch. If that doesn't get it working I'll delete the converted virtual disk and re-convert it from the original. If I still can't get VBox working after that I'll be forced to install VMware Server (resource hog). I'm getting desperate now...
[Background] Until a few weeks ago we were happily using qemu-kvm but encountered a bug when using the "-smb" argument after updating the host from Fedora 9 to 12. (re: F12: qemu-kvm with -smb hangs then dies) In an attempt to get our virtualized MS Windows Server 2003 back up and running I installed VirtualBox-OSE-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64 and friends over the Christmas break. I converted the qemu qcow2 image to raw then to vdi format using qemu-img and VBoxManage tools. There were no errors during the install of VirtualBox. In the beginning Bug Buddy notified of a crash whenever we started up VBox but after some digging and experimenting I believe the crashes were caused by running VBox in a VNC session instead of at the console. I haven't seen a crash when starting it in a native console session. Unfortunately, this means I can do very little remotely.

I am trying to install X on my Arch system, but as you know there is a problem with running X as a guest in Vb.
According to the Wiki, X will work on VB 3.2.9, but every time I try to follow the link the URL is not available. Does anybody know how to get this download?
According to the wiki, 3.2.10 will not work with X, but I am not certain if there is a problem with the version I am currently running (3.2.8).
I decided to take centos 5.5 for a testdrive. I download the live cd iso and attempted to boot the system via virtualbox on my mac os 10 system. I get the blue boot screen and choosing either the graphical boot or text boot gets me no where, the blue screen remains and nothing happens). Virtualbox is able to boot other linux systems fine so I am not sure if this is a centos issue or centos/virtualbox issue.

I then read that the reason that i don't have any sub capability when i'm running XP as guest OS using VirtualBox is that I have a open source version of the program.
So I uninstalled the one I got through software center and downloaded and installed one from VirtualBox website. It installs but does not tell me where to find it in the menu so I don't know how to launch the program. It also doesn't show up as an "installed software" when I search for it in software center.
I recently installed debian testing, amd64, on my box and I am running the xfce desktop. When I login, I always get a bubble popup telling me that virtualbox is not running. Is it something I should be worried about? I use only Linux on my machine.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?
