Ubuntu :: Review Tutorial On Sharing 3G Over WiFi

Feb 15, 2011

I've spent some time trying to get my 3G card connection shared over WIFI and despite the number of sites out there I had a lot of problems putting it all together. So I wrote a small guide about it, but due to several issues (time/bandwidth) I can't retest it from scratch.I was wondering if someone could take a look at it and make suggestions or corrections. The idea is to take your 3G data card and turn your WIFI into an access point so you can connect other devices to it for internet access.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Sharing: Tutorial Doesn't Make Sense?

Feb 5, 2010

At home I'm currently running Hardy on a desktop machine and Jaunty (Eeebuntu) on an EeePC. I often connect the desktop to the internet via a cellphone as modem. I also often connect the EeePC to the desktop via crossover cable and SSH into the desktop so I cam watch video files from the desktop on the EeePC from the sofa or bed.

I'd like to be able to use the desktop's internet connection from the EeePC. This means I have to set up the desktop so the EeePC can share its connection - this involves setting up the desktop as a gateway I believe?

Looking around for info on how to do this, I found this guide [URL]...in-ubuntu.html - but unfortunately it seems this guide has not been written correctly. It repeats itself in one section (below: repeated section in bold):

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet Through Wifi From LAN

Dec 12, 2010

The place I will be staying at (Japanese Guesthouse) only offers internet through cable. What I'd like to do is be able to connect my other devices through wifi (Cellphone for example) to the Ubuntu machine connected through this ethernet cable in order to access the internet.I've searched for a good hour but I'm getting extremely confused about the gateways, bridges or whatever else people suggest. Most of what I've been able to find actually only covers getting internet through wifi and then sharing it through lan (I'm trying to achieve the opposite).

So if anyone could point me in the right direction, or at least tell me what terms I should be using for my searches, it would greatly help. Some computer info might be useful. I'm using a Dell XPS M1210, the network adapter is an Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG and I'm running Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.10.

I am spending a week in my grandparents house and I forgot my router. So is it possible to share the Ethernet connection I have with my phone using my laptop's wifi without a router? I think (I have very little knowledge about wireless networks )something like ad hoc network should do the trick? If so how do you set it up?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing, Maybe Through A Wifi Signal?

Jul 6, 2010

I have been using windows 7 for awhile now, and i was using connectify (an internet connection sharing program that turns your laptop into a wireless router), and i'm planning on completely switching to Linux from a dual boot, and i was wandering if there is a way to share an internet connection (mainly to my PS3) on Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and wirelessly if possible, though i wouldn't mind if it was through Ethernet.

Ubuntu Networking :: WIFI File Sharing With Android Tablet?

Sep 20, 2010

I coach a high school debate team. I would like to take my team paperless... Within the world of debate, any evidence you read is required to be made available for your opponent. Many teams use a third laptop as a viewing laptops. They will make a computer to computer network and make a dropbox on the desktop of the 'viewing' computer.

To save money I would like to be able to use some of these cheap bargain basement netbooks/tablets that are coming out as solely a viewing computer. Most of these cheap machines are running android.So....is it possible to network with an android to share files over wifi?Internet is not an option as it is either banned for use in the round or not available...usually both....

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing An Internet Connection Through A Wifi Card

Jan 30, 2011

Im living in a student-city where we get one internet-cable in the wall each, if we need more we are told to use a switch. But, since ive got some tech that depends on wifi, I was wondering if its possible to setup my ubuntu to work like a sort of wifi-switch?

Basically, Im not allowed to set up anything that resembles a router..(so no dhcp) all i need is what a switch would do, only wireless and wpa/wep would be very nice

Atm ive got my cabled network plugged into my onboard ethernet-port, and ive got a d-link DWA-556 (Atheros AR5008 I think) wifi card that i wanted to use to share my connection. is this doable?

Networking :: Sharing Printer Via WiFi With MacBook

Jan 26, 2010

I have got a wireless network in my house with a router as the hub and my Linux Laptop and Macbook connecting to it. I have got a wireless Kodak printer which the Macbook uses, but they do not have any drivers for Linux. I have enabled ssh for both the laptops and have enabled "Print sharing" on the Macbook. Can I access the printer from the Linux laptop via the Macbook? When I have sshed to the macbook, the kodak printer comes up in the list of printers to choose from...but the printing job just goes to the queue, but does not actually complete. Is this because I have not got the drivers for the linux laptop?

Networking :: Sharing Internet Connection - Using My Desktop As A Wifi Hotspot

Dec 27, 2010

I have two computers:
- one is my desktop, running ubuntu. it has two NIC's one is wired (eth0), the other is wireless (wlan0).
- the other is my laptop, running archlinux. two NIC's as well (eth & wlan).

I would like to connect my desktop to my router via eth0 and connect my laptop to my desktop via wlan0, providing internet access to my laptop. i would like both computers to be able to use the internet simultaneously (not all packets would be forwarded).

Any manner of doing this would be ok, but if this is a simple enough task to do it by simply configuring some files (e.g. /etc files) rather than installing some unnecessarily big application, then that would be wonderful!

Also, not really as high a priority but if possible, i would like this to perhaps not be limited to my laptop. connecting any device (a psp or pda for example) to the internet this way (making it a hotspot in a sense) would be super! encrypting the connection (WEP for instance) would be ultra-mega!

Miscellaneous info:my desktop uses dhcp to connect to the router.

Slackware :: How To Review Boot Messages

Mar 16, 2010

EDIT: not fully solved; there is (at time of writing) still an issue about bootlogd buffering until the logfile is accessible but that's probably as far as we are going to get for now, until someone peeks into the bootlogd source code.

Is it possible to review boot messages after boot? Kernel messages are available via dmesg (and many are logged early in the rc.M script by the /bin/dmesg -s 65536 > /var/log/dmesg) but many console boot messages are not kernel messages. During boot, messages can be viewed using Shift+PgUp but when the rc.S script finishes, init starts an agetty on tty1 which prints a login prompt. Then tty1 is no longer the console and Shift+PgUp cannot be used to scroll back through the boot messages. Any delayed boot messages do not have effective carriage returns so "marquee" across the screen, one following another, a line below.

Is it possible to leave tty1 as the console by de-configuring the tty1/agetty line in inittab, thus allowing Shift+PgUp to be used to scroll back through older messages and allowing proper horizontal alignment for delayed boot messages? I would try it but the inittab line x1:4:respawn:/etc/rc.d/rc.4 runs /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm and this grabs the first unused tty<n>. The xdm man page and xdm config file comments do not reveal whether it is possible to make xdm use a specific tty<n>.

Another solution may be something like the sysvinit binary that intercepts all console writes and then dumps them to log at the end of the boot process but if it were that easy or useful it would already be done and publicised (wouldn't it?).

Software :: New Version Of Lit2PDF Script For Use/Review

Dec 1, 2010

I posted a completed version of it a while back and just wanted to post the latest stable version. I'm using it as a pet project to teach myself proper BASH scripting, but also to help my wife get .lit e-books onto her Sony E-Reader since it seems to do a better job of converting the files than Calibre(For some reason some of our books won't convert in Calibre and they will with this). I've added some zenity windows to make it just a little more friendly in regards to selecting the file you want to convert. You no longer have to drag it into the terminal window and make sure you've got quotes around it if there's a space. It's also now completely BASH instead of python. I'm a "beginner" programmer/scripter, so some review, comments, and constructive criticism are welcome because everything I know I've taught myself with Google and experimentation.

To install it, just grab the tarball, extract it, make the files executable if they aren't already when you download them, and then run the install.sh file in the terminal. I tried to be very descriptive and informative in the changelog.txt and Readme.txt files as well so I hope those suit their purposes well.

P.S. If you're wondering about the versioning, I just adopted the same philosophy as the Ubuntu community and just made the date the version number. 10.11.30 equals November 30th, 2010.

General :: Review The Boot-time Info That's Going To The Console?

Feb 18, 2011

I'd really like to be able to examine all the information that flys off the top of my terminal when my system boots (off of fd0, the only way I've done it, so far): review of "similar threads" yields nothing; seemingly not a man pages item; have not found any how-to's that cover this; the daemons for logging are third-to-the-last before logon prompt (and still displayed, the ONLY reason I know THAT); seems like it should be a compile-time sw-switch settng (sub-optimal since I'm still not comfortable with compiling kernels); but I was hoping it's already being captured in some log file somewhere that I'm as yet unaware exists. I do realize that if I had a printing console, this would be unnecessary.

General :: Calling Gurus And Noobs - Review Filesystem Hierarchy Explanation?

Jun 10, 2010

Back when I was first learning Linux, one of the questions that I kept wondering about was "what are all these files and directories for?" I couldn't find a resource that would explain them in a digestible manner. Specifically, I was looking for one that would allow me to look at a Linux filesystem interactively, collapsing and expanding folders to look at just the ones I was interested in at the moment. So later, when I got the opportunity, I wrote it.

But despite a ton of research, I'm still not totally knowledgeable on the subject. The most important thing I'm looking for right now is for experienced Linux/Unix people to tell me where I got stuff wrong, and for newbies to tell me how useful it is to them and which things need clarification. I'm also interested in technical and graphical ways to improve usability, like better icons, layout, etc. I know I need to be able to collapse long descriptions, but what would you like to see? The Works Cited list and a full introduction are still on the way as of this writing.

Without further ado: Linux Filesystem Hierarchy Explanation. You'll need a fairly recent browser that can handle XSLT; the actual info is stored as XML, and transformed into HTML with an XSLT stylesheet. This is still a work in progress, and I'll be updating it as the thread progresses.

Finally, would people be interested in collaborating with me on this, as an open-source project? I've never done anything like that, and I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to give it in the future, but I really think this should be continued and expanded.

Edit: Works Cited and decent intro are now in place.

Code:
