I thought of leaving a comment below the story, but figured why bother. The main complaint appears to be about the appearance of the desktop, and the graphical installer "feels old." Then he goes on to recommend Trisquel instead as a "better Debian-based distribution" than Debian.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI Radeon x1300 graphic card on an Intel platform.Since the last reinstall my Debian Squeeze system shows very poor performance in glxgears,only 80-90 FPS. Last time I had a problem the kms setting in the kernel. I disabled the modding setting in GRUB and then glxgears showed about 900-1300 FPS. Now,the problem is back, even though I made the same setting in the boot loader.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi had recently loaded squeeze and had an issue with the 2d performance.i.e when being prompted for the root password, the shading slowly draws down the screen several times before stopping at the final darker shade. i then added the linux-firmware-nonfree package. all worked extremely well, even compiz, but i don't really care about compiz. i just loaded it to see how it performed. i then distro-hopped a bit and when i came back to squeeze the first thing i did was add the package, but the video is acting like i haven't added the package. i've searched for an answer, but have not found anything recent to indicate if xorg was upgraded or what.stable lenny works fine, but i'd rather have the nice console fonts when not in x and more up to date apps like gimp and xsane in squeeze.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEDIT: not fully solved; there is (at time of writing) still an issue about bootlogd buffering until the logfile is accessible but that's probably as far as we are going to get for now, until someone peeks into the bootlogd source code.
Is it possible to review boot messages after boot? Kernel messages are available via dmesg (and many are logged early in the rc.M script by the /bin/dmesg -s 65536 > /var/log/dmesg) but many console boot messages are not kernel messages. During boot, messages can be viewed using Shift+PgUp but when the rc.S script finishes, init starts an agetty on tty1 which prints a login prompt. Then tty1 is no longer the console and Shift+PgUp cannot be used to scroll back through the boot messages. Any delayed boot messages do not have effective carriage returns so "marquee" across the screen, one following another, a line below.
Is it possible to leave tty1 as the console by de-configuring the tty1/agetty line in inittab, thus allowing Shift+PgUp to be used to scroll back through older messages and allowing proper horizontal alignment for delayed boot messages? I would try it but the inittab line x1:4:respawn:/etc/rc.d/rc.4 runs /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm and this grabs the first unused tty<n>. The xdm man page and xdm config file comments do not reveal whether it is possible to make xdm use a specific tty<n>.
Another solution may be something like the sysvinit binary that intercepts all console writes and then dumps them to log at the end of the boot process but if it were that easy or useful it would already be done and publicised (wouldn't it?).
I've spent some time trying to get my 3G card connection shared over WIFI and despite the number of sites out there I had a lot of problems putting it all together. So I wrote a small guide about it, but due to several issues (time/bandwidth) I can't retest it from scratch.I was wondering if someone could take a look at it and make suggestions or corrections.The idea is to take your 3G data card and turn your WIFI into an access point so you can connect other devices to it for internet access.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI posted a completed version of it a while back and just wanted to post the latest stable version. I'm using it as a pet project to teach myself proper BASH scripting, but also to help my wife get .lit e-books onto her Sony E-Reader since it seems to do a better job of converting the files than Calibre(For some reason some of our books won't convert in Calibre and they will with this). I've added some zenity windows to make it just a little more friendly in regards to selecting the file you want to convert. You no longer have to drag it into the terminal window and make sure you've got quotes around it if there's a space. It's also now completely BASH instead of python. I'm a "beginner" programmer/scripter, so some review, comments, and constructive criticism are welcome because everything I know I've taught myself with Google and experimentation.
To install it, just grab the tarball, extract it, make the files executable if they aren't already when you download them, and then run the install.sh file in the terminal. I tried to be very descriptive and informative in the changelog.txt and Readme.txt files as well so I hope those suit their purposes well.
P.S. If you're wondering about the versioning, I just adopted the same philosophy as the Ubuntu community and just made the date the version number. 10.11.30 equals November 30th, 2010.

I'd really like to be able to examine all the information that flys off the top of my terminal when my system boots (off of fd0, the only way I've done it, so far): review of "similar threads" yields nothing; seemingly not a man pages item; have not found any how-to's that cover this; the daemons for logging are third-to-the-last before logon prompt (and still displayed, the ONLY reason I know THAT); seems like it should be a compile-time sw-switch settng (sub-optimal since I'm still not comfortable with compiling kernels); but I was hoping it's already being captured in some log file somewhere that I'm as yet unaware exists. I do realize that if I had a printing console, this would be unnecessary.

View 7 Replies View RelatedBack when I was first learning Linux, one of the questions that I kept wondering about was "what are all these files and directories for?" I couldn't find a resource that would explain them in a digestible manner. Specifically, I was looking for one that would allow me to look at a Linux filesystem interactively, collapsing and expanding folders to look at just the ones I was interested in at the moment. So later, when I got the opportunity, I wrote it.
But despite a ton of research, I'm still not totally knowledgeable on the subject. The most important thing I'm looking for right now is for experienced Linux/Unix people to tell me where I got stuff wrong, and for newbies to tell me how useful it is to them and which things need clarification. I'm also interested in technical and graphical ways to improve usability, like better icons, layout, etc. I know I need to be able to collapse long descriptions, but what would you like to see? The Works Cited list and a full introduction are still on the way as of this writing.
Without further ado: Linux Filesystem Hierarchy Explanation. You'll need a fairly recent browser that can handle XSLT; the actual info is stored as XML, and transformed into HTML with an XSLT stylesheet. This is still a work in progress, and I'll be updating it as the thread progresses.
Finally, would people be interested in collaborating with me on this, as an open-source project? I've never done anything like that, and I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to give it in the future, but I really think this should be continued and expanded.

When I boot off of Debian Kernel 2.6.26-2-686. This is what happens. It stops at attached scsi generic sg5 type 0 After 4 or 5 minutes it comes back and says.

I was browsing Distrowatch and reading the various distro descriptions. Of course it mentions the text installer (although I really think it can be called graphical, just not X) and the vanilla packages, etc. But then I got to the last paragraph which says:Quote:

The rest is just customization which I would do with any other distro, I'd just have to use distro-specific tools to do it instead of the vanilla "most of these things will work with most other distro" that Slack uses.
Now to be fair, I'm new to linux (9 months) and started using Slackware with 13 after first using Mandriva and Ubuntu for a few months, so maybe I'm missing some history. But I was wondering if people that actually use Slackware find the quoted bit to be fair.

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!
I've just install debian squeeze version, or the testing one, but I am not really happy with it. Is not listening me all the time. If I install the debian stable I don't have internet connection. Is it possible to update the kernel somehow using the testing version?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:
1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.
I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.
I installed Firestarter firewall on debian Squeeze.Now i note there is a gui available in System->Administration which apparently does not need to be running all the time - its not set up to start on boot.When I boot I notice the boot message has a line saying "Starting Firestarter firewall .... failed"When I am logged in and type "/etc/init.d/firestarter status" as the Firestarter FAQs say, I get"Firestarter is running... ... (warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.

Fresh install of Debian 6.0 (squeeze) and the memory shows 3.8 GB. I have 6 sticks of 2 gb on the board.
Pertinent dmesg lines: AMI BIOS detected: BIOS may corrupt low RAM, working around it.
3083MB HIGHMEM available.
883MB LOWMEM available.
Bios tests 12 gb of ram fine.
After dist-upgrade a few days ago, X refuses to kick in.

I do not think ATI dropped support, however, even without fglrx, nothing works.
I installed Debian Squeeze with no issues. I went to install latest Nvidia driver as done previously with Lenny. Used instructions that worked on lenny from "the trooper" [url]
Downloaded th latest driver for my GeForce 7300 GS vidio card, driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.12.run
Used "method # 2 as described in HOW TO,as it worked perfectly in the past on Lenny. Only syntax I changed was instead of gdm I typed gdm3 as it appears that is the new name for gnome in Squeeze.

Now the trouble showed up, Unfortunatly I can only go off my memory. A question was asked stating that something did not match, it needed a 3 and the driver had a 4 version or somethng of this sort. then it asked if I new what I was doing (and I lied) and selected yes. And whammo, it didn't work. (This question was asked when i did in Lenny and it is working perfectly still on that system). I now can not boot to GUI, I notice when system boots it starts in "S" mode although I select normal boot from grub2.
Not too bad if I got to reinstall as little is on the system. I just want to know what I am missing on the instalation deal or should I be going about this difrently with Squeeze.
This topic began in the Debian Development forum here I have successfully completed both the install and the after installation configuration. I have a fully functional system on this little baby, inspite of the fact that wireless (Broadcom bcm4312), ethernet (Realtek) and sound were initially broken.
There is a lot of assistance out there on the web. In the previous thread, I was having trouble installing any debian on a usb stick. The issues that needed resolving were 1. Bad stick
2. Incompatible kernels between boot.img and .iso
3. The method of copying .iso to the stick that finally worked was wget My first successful usb install was Lenny. Even though I upgraded the stock system with lenny-backports, I could not get wireless, ethernet or sound working the only connection I could get to the internet was through my 3g stick and that was not performing up to it's capability. I manually configured wvdial to get that working.
I attempted an upgrade to squeeze several times and each time the upgrade trashed the system. I finally found squeeze boot.img and .iso files from an eee pc blog. This allowed a fresh install of Squeeze and I was making progress. The little atom processor would not handle the b43-fwcutter driver, so I compiled one from the Broadcom site written especially for the atom processor. Now I had cable broadband supplied wireless. I got my ethernet working with help from the Gnome site technical specs on Network Manager. Simply changing ifupdown=false to ifupdown=true in the network manager config file.
Sound was activated by help from a blog entitled "Debian on the Dell Mini 9" My head is spinning now or I would be more specific and instructive on all I did to get this baby up and running. If anyone asks, I may do a how-to.
