CentOS 5 :: Fork - Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Sep 11, 2009

I installed a while ago two CentOS 5.3 servers. One of them was running Samba and another OpenLDAP. I configured Samba to act as a PDC on the network and everything was working fine. I was already on policies configuration and desktop migrations.

The following problems are Samba server problem, LDAP server is on hold until I figure out the first problem.

Software conf:

Hardware conf:

One day, both servers began crashing, and after a while, it showed the following during the boot on Samba:

After that, ALL CentOS installations had this problem after yum update, epel installation and some smb.conf modifications:

I figured out it might be EPEL (i did installed yum-priorities and tryied updating the base sistem BEFORE epel installations), so I installed the system without EPEL yum repository. After some good and relieving 15 min working, the system crashed AGAIN after yum base update and showed the following on boot time:

And it stops right there.

Maybe some wrong kernel update? the first time it crashed in one way, with running updated system (After the first update, no manual update was done). The sequel problems were all after Kernel update and EPEL. The last one was just after Kernel update. I'll try one last time with NO updates, but i can't run the system like that.

I can't do anything that might one day crash, it's a 6000-7000 user gov environment, but i don't want to install another distro, so if I don't figure it out, they will order me to.

Server :: "fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable" For Certain User?

Jan 4, 2010

I have a machine running on RH with 4G memory and 8G swap.Just now I'm having a problem when loging in with a user - just call it "userX" -.Each time I'm logged in I got a message Code:-bash: fork: ource temporarily unavailableAnd almost everytime I entered any command, it gives me the same warning. In some time (rarely) it will give me proper result, but almost any time it gives me the warning and no result. When I use 'top' command, it shows that I still have 500M free memory and about 8G free swaps. Plus the process for userX is less than 20 processes, and each of them are short processes (less than an hour, mostly just few seconds). As a note this problem only occur on userX, for any other user on the machine everything works just fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Is NIC Intentionally Disabled?

Sep 19, 2010

I have looked at Ubuntu LiveCDs going back to Edgy, but regardless what version I'm trying or what box I'm trying it on, my wireless network card never works - I can never connect to my network.I've begun to believe that the NIC must be intentionally disabled on the LiveCD version. :/ Conversely, with Mint Linux and PCLinuxOS (for example) LiveCDs, I slap the disc in, enter my network key, and BOOM-- I'm on the internet.

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Live Disks Not Working (disk Is Intentionally Plural Not A Typo)

Jan 11, 2011

I like the xfce desktop environment over the gnome one. So when i chose an emergency plan B in case something happens to windows AND/OR arch, i always try Xubuntu. I have made multiple live disks from multiple computers, and none of the live disks function properly. One went haywire when i tried to update the system(can't remember exactly what went wrong), one would not even actually boot into the live disk, one would not install, and so forth and so on. At first i just though it was something wrong with the iso since the download had been paused and resumed multiple times, but right before i chose arch linux a friend tried using his xubuntu disk and it failed to work either, and i recently tried using another computer and had another failed result.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Intermittently Double Left Clicks / When Single Left Click

Jun 15, 2011

I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.

Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread. As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.

Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

Programming :: Implement Left-associative Operators In Parser That Does Not Allow Left Recursion?

Jan 20, 2011

The first is about implementing function calls. The way I currently have it is that functions are called with a C++ std::vector of nodes as the parameters. How would I turn a comma-seperated list of expressions into a C++ vector in the grammar?Second, how do you implement left-associative operators in a parser that does not allow left recursion?

And third, what would be the best internal representation of integers? A C++ int seems simplest, but limited. Using GMP seems more versatile, but I'm afraid it might seriously slow down the interpreter compared to C++ ints.

Ubuntu :: "Swap Left Alt And Left Win" Keyboard Layout Works Intermittently?

Jul 10, 2011

When I swap my left alt with my left win key using the gnome keyboard layout options, the swap only works intermittently. I have an aluminum Apple keyboard with no numpad. No matter what layout options I choose, I can't seem to get it working.I also have the same setup on my laptop and work desktop and it works without issue. I've ensured my .Xmodmap doesn't exist. When I say "works intermittently" I mean when I'm trying to use "alt+b, alt+f" navigation in emacs or bash, it doesn't work but if I click around a bit then try again, it works. Also, I use alt+arrows to switch workspaces and that always works

General :: How To Use Fork In My Programme

Aug 31, 2009

1) Write a C program using the fork() system call that that generates the Fibonacci sequence in the child process. The number of the sequence will be provided in the command line. For example, if 5 is provided, the first five numbers in the Fibonacci sequence will be output by the child process. Because the parent and child processes have their own copies of the data, it will be necessary for the child to output the sequence. Have the parent invoke the wait() call to wait for the child process to complete before exiting the program. Perform necessary error checking to ensure that a non-negative number is passed on the command line.

2) Repeat the preceding exercise, this time using the CreateProcess () in the Win32 API. In this instance, you will need to specify a separate program to be invoked from CreateProcess(). It is this separate program that will run as a child process outputting the Fibonacci sequence. Perform necessary error checking to ensure that a non-negative number is passed on the command line.i have done with Fibonacci sequence .but i dont know how to include tht fork() function and win32 api .any one can help to finish?

Programming :: How To Use Globals When Using Fork

As part of my ongoing project I need to put together a messaging server of sorts. So far I have coded a server which accepts multiple connections, which then runs a function that will perform a task, see below. On this sever I have a global structure which is populated using the data found in a read() buffer. However with each fork() that runs the below function each process is handed a blank structure. How could I go about allowing each fork() child process access the same structure?

My code should hopefully show what I am trying to do?

Programming :: Fork/exec Versus Posix_spawn

Sep 30, 2010

Just coming over from Windows here... where I've been using "CreateProcess" which returns a value depending on whether the process was created successfully or not.

Now I'm trying to create a process on linux and I've been learning about fork/exec, and I've been struggling with the fact that there seems to be no easy way to know (within the original parent process) if exec succeeded or not. (without forcing the parent process to hang around polling it or something).

Anyway, I've now just discovered the posix_spawn function, and it seems exactly what I need. However I'm finding the documentation a little hard to understand. In particular, I can't find actual confirmation that it will definitely return an error if creating the process fails (like CreateProcess does on windows). So can anyone confirm that for me?

The text on the documentation states: "If posix_spawn() or posix_spawnp() fail for any of the reasons that would cause fork() or one of the exec family of functions to fail, an error value shall be returned as described by fork() and exec"

This makes me think it uses exec/fork under the hood, and so I wonder if it can be trusted..?

And also, most of the examples on the internet for creating processes use fork/exec, so I wonder if there is some catch with posix_spawn I haven't read about... (since it seems a much simpler way of doing things)

Programming :: Passing Usb_dev_handle After Fork Exec?

Aug 19, 2010

I have been struggling with this for about a week now. I'm working with QuickUSB to send video streams to and from a device. I get the fastest results by fork()ing and exec()ing new processes everytime I run a pipeline, which works great when reading from files, but now i have to transition it so that i am reading/writing data over a QuickUSB bus. I have it working for each individual process, but i can't run multiple processes because it won't let me open the device. After looking through QuickUSB's API a little closer, i found that the QHANDLE type that they use to describe the usb device is actually just a usb_dev_handle *. From what i have found, this is an incomplete structure, so i am having trouble with opening it in the main process and passing it to each new process to write to it. I already have semaphores set up to prevent multiple processes using it at the same time. I just CANT find out how to utilize the same usb device between two process that are forked and exec. i also must do the exec() because otherwise my gtk and gstreamer fails for trying to share resources.
