Feb 9, 2011On 10.04, Lucid, I have a need to adjust the system menu for one of our accounts to remove the Log Out [Name] item. It's a rather embarrassing problem involving the nVidia driver, a laptop, a dock and dual monitors, where ending a gnome session sems to crash the video driver (or even the whole computer, I'm not sure) where I can adjust the contents of the system menu either for the whole system or for particular users?

I think this is because I had a bad "A" drive that I just replaced and before that I did a lot of changing of the mbr and grub commands. So there must be something on the "B" or second drive that is causing this. Right now everything is fine with my computer and this is just house keeping. I would like to delete the "Windows 7 sdb1" menu Item if possible. Just to be clear, windows boots with the sda1 command (first menu Item), and the "windows 7 sdb1" does nothing at all.

If I'm perfectly honest, I really don't like the "messaging menu". I don't like the way it's a single point that lumps all sorts of messages together. From a socialite's perspective, I'm sure it's awesome... from a more business orientated perspective, it's cumbersom - the icon is green, does that mean I have an important email, a new post has popped up on my RSS feed (via Liferea), or is it just Bob saying "Hi" in Empathy... I won't know until I click it I would rather have separate notification icons for the individual applications, just like it used to be. Now, I know how to remove application from the Messaging Menu... or at least I thought I did.
I just tried removing 'gwibber' from /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications I have stopped using Empathy (I have used Pidgin/GAIM for a lot longer and I'm stuck in my ways ), so that's gone. I have removed the PPA version of Liferea that had Message Menu integration, so that's gone. I have removed Evolution as I use (and have done so for ~10 years) ClawsMail, so that's gone. The last thing I want to get rid of is Gwibber. I like Gwibber, I just don't want it in the Messaging Menu.

I'm working with a CyberCafe style application so user accounts come and go and I wanted to see if I can set it up that after an account is created that it will do some customisations.
I've found examples of adding menu items but nothing specific to removing via the terminal.
I think I may already know the answer to this. The Alacarte application simply manages the XML in the settings.menu to hide menu items and that if I want to do any customisations from the terminal I will need to play with this XML file to hide things.
I'd like the customisation per user rather than a blanket removal for all users

Ever since I installed 9.10, I get a long list of OS's (actually, multiple repeats of what appears to be the same Ubuntu install), and I can't get rid of them.I've looked through various tutorials and the GRUB 2 Community documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) but I still can't get rid of the menu items.I edited the 40_custom file and was able to add the entries I wanted to see, and then chmoded 644 all the other files in the /etc/grub.d directory and run update-grub.The custom entries do appear at the end of the menu now, but the old entries are still there as well. This is what I get when I run the update-grub:

Oct 14, 2010I was playing with Banshee and installed the banshee-extension-soundmenu package to get the Banshee control in the Indicator Applet Sound Menu.
I had so many problems with Banshee crashing and using up my system resources that I decided to stop using it. I deselected the Sound Menu option from Banshee's Preferences>Extensions, then I uninstalled the banshee-extension-soundmenu package.
However after this the Sound Menu is still showing the Banshee control. Is there a way to get rid of it?

May 23, 2010This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

Apr 6, 2010The indicator applet session gnome-panel applet (the one that lets you change your status for empathy/pidgin, logout, switch user, etc.) has the suspend and hibernate options. My computer will not suspend or hibernate properly (every time I try to wake it up, the hard drive will work for about 4 minutes and the screen will stay blank so I have to restart) and I would like to remove those items from the menu. I would just like to know if there is a way to remove the hibernate and suspend items in the indicator applet session menu. I've already tried browsing around gconf-editor to no avail. If it is not possible, let me know
