On 10.04, Lucid, I have a need to adjust the system menu for one of our accounts to remove the Log Out [Name] item. It's a rather embarrassing problem involving the nVidia driver, a laptop, a dock and dual monitors, where ending a gnome session sems to crash the video driver (or even the whole computer, I'm not sure) where I can adjust the contents of the system menu either for the whole system or for particular users?
View 6 RepliesAs a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I right-click a panel and choose "New Panel", the panel is made, but is not visible. The panel is placed on the left side of the screen, and icons on the desktop is moved to the right. Also windows does not use the full width of the screen when maximized. I've tried to remove the panel configuration in my home directory, logout and login, installing ATI drivers and running a gnome-panel command (from another post on ubuntu forums), but nothing works.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04LTS with Gnome 2.30
I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:
kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.
My partner and I share the computer, so we are normally both logged in.
When we come to turn the computer off, one of us will log out then the other shuts down (to have a clean shutdown), but when either one of us uses 'Logout' the system just freezes, no response, nothing, have to turn the machine off via power button.
We can 'switch user' fine, and everything else appears ok but log out fails, I did try reporting a bug on this, but seems to have got taken over with people with dual screens / SLI cards, taking it over and its not the same thing.
I get the 'impression' its a graphics driver issue, I'm using the 'recommended' Nvidia driver (am at work and can't remember which version sorry).
I'm running firefox 3.6.12 with the following add ons installed: Windows Media Player 10, Div X web player 1.4.0.233 and Flash 10.1 r102. Ubuntu is 32 bit as is the Flash plugin. Quicktime, VLC and iTunes application detector are installed but disabled. I get recurrent episodes whilst using firefox where the entire screen goes grey/black and after a minute or so the login screen appears and I have to enter my password get back to the desktop. I suspect that this is flash related as it normally occurs after watching a few minutes of video. Disabling flash reduces the frequency of the problem but does not eliminate it.

Gnome + Compiz: Good Login sound, No Logout sound.
KDE: No Login Sound, good Logout sound.
So, what is the problem with Login/Logout sounds in Linux now? I have used the last 4 Ubuntu releases, and Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu(gnome).How could a fix that?
If I shutdown from X the system hangs and I have to yank out the power cord. Same on logout.
ctrl+alt+f1 hangs for a few minutes and then starts a terminal; which does not respond to the keyboard.
There are no tty.conf files in /etc/init .
But inittab looks normal to me and includes tty (1-6)
Executing init 6 from a terminal in X will reboot the system
I was thinking this might be a dbus issue, but I am not sure. I also understand some recent issues exist with SysRq sequences. May be a video card issue,,,
Other than normal package upgrades the only changes were a recent change from a VGA to HDMI cable. I can't see why that would matter

I was trying to update software and it told me to log out and login again. When I tried to login it told that there is a problem and I need to log out and to login again and it kept repeating the message and fedora is not working at all and before that it wasn't working right it kept suspending without reason and each time I turn the laptop off from the power button.

I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.

I've recently found out about "lilo -R" (I've always hated waiting for Lilo after reboot but never thought that a solution could exist :-) ), but I would like to avoid typing it in a shell windows. It would be easier if I just had a "Reboot to Windows" option in the KDE logout menu.The question is: do I have to recompile KDE or there is a simpler way (i.e. scripts)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have included a "start" (slackware logo) button and an exit button. The problem is, neither of these buttons work. The start button should bring up the fluxbox menu but I have found to bring up this menu is by right clicking on the screen.the only way to logout and go back to the login screen seems to be via the fluxbox menu. Running "exit" from the command line only exits the terminal of course.

I think this is because I had a bad "A" drive that I just replaced and before that I did a lot of changing of the mbr and grub commands. So there must be something on the "B" or second drive that is causing this. Right now everything is fine with my computer and this is just house keeping. I would like to delete the "Windows 7 sdb1" menu Item if possible. Just to be clear, windows boots with the sda1 command (first menu Item), and the "windows 7 sdb1" does nothing at all.
How do I remove the menu from the desktop? It was not there before the 9.10 upgrade.

If I'm perfectly honest, I really don't like the "messaging menu". I don't like the way it's a single point that lumps all sorts of messages together. From a socialite's perspective, I'm sure it's awesome... from a more business orientated perspective, it's cumbersom - the icon is green, does that mean I have an important email, a new post has popped up on my RSS feed (via Liferea), or is it just Bob saying "Hi" in Empathy... I won't know until I click it I would rather have separate notification icons for the individual applications, just like it used to be. Now, I know how to remove application from the Messaging Menu... or at least I thought I did.
I just tried removing 'gwibber' from /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications I have stopped using Empathy (I have used Pidgin/GAIM for a lot longer and I'm stuck in my ways ), so that's gone. I have removed the PPA version of Liferea that had Message Menu integration, so that's gone. I have removed Evolution as I use (and have done so for ~10 years) ClawsMail, so that's gone. The last thing I want to get rid of is Gwibber. I like Gwibber, I just don't want it in the Messaging Menu.

I'm working with a CyberCafe style application so user accounts come and go and I wanted to see if I can set it up that after an account is created that it will do some customisations.
I've found examples of adding menu items but nothing specific to removing via the terminal.
I think I may already know the answer to this. The Alacarte application simply manages the XML in the settings.menu to hide menu items and that if I want to do any customisations from the terminal I will need to play with this XML file to hide things.
I'd like the customisation per user rather than a blanket removal for all users
