Is it possible to get the gnome style scrollbars on the classic desktop on 11.04? The new disappearing slider is bugging me. In particular I like clicking on the scrollbar below the slider to advance.
I would have thought the arrows at the edges of the new scrollbar move up/down by line and the grey pads of space between the separator would move by pg/up or down. All seems correct with the exception of the arrows to move up/down.I look around through code, manuals and pdfs and such often and used to the use arrow pointers at the top and bottom of the old scrollbar style to move down or up by line all with the mouse....now with the new scroll bar I find myself struggling all the time for this type of simple operation as it seems the arrows in the overlay scrollbar perform a pgDown/pgUp operation not a move down/up line....anyone know how?
PS - If anyone is curious on how to best to test this on your own, a simple test I did was to create a text file of line numbers with the following command:
I don't know if you've been as shocked as i was when using 11.04, but i found the new "overlay scrollbars" completely useless.
what is the logic in hovering in one place to make an invisible scrollbar appear on the right-hand side of the mouse pointer and then move to that scrollbar and use it (if you're lucky enough the scrollbar doesn't disappear as you move towards it)? I've been struggling with that thing for 10 minutes and then i had enough already.
By all means, innovation is great, it's cool to think of new ways to use computers etc. But please don't make default on a distro something as dodgy as this. When i see these scrollbars i have a hard time believing it was widely tested: has there been a poll at all to get user feedback? New things should not be implemented for the sake of being new or different. In my opinion, if something doesn't really improve the OS or desktop environment, then it's not worth making it default.
if anyone is familiar with conky and have managed to put horizontal scrollbars in a conky window that contains a 'wall of text', and if so.. how? I cant seem to make it.
No matter how many times I update or install new flash plugins in firefox, I always wind up with 2 versions of the 'Shockwave Flash' plugin. The first is the prevous version of Adobe, the second is the current version of either Adobe, Gnash or Swfdec. I use yum to keep my packages in synch. When a new version of Adobe comes though, it erases the older version of the currently installed plugin, keeps the newer currently installed version, and installs itself as the new version, both versions enabled.
Hope that paragraph makes sense to you, it gave me a headache to write. Further, they must both be enabled for any of them to work, and which ever I use the video is slow, choppy and prone to pausing for no apparent reason. The CPU usage is always pegged to the roof and the sound is often out of synch.
What I'm wondering is whether or not this is the normal situation or if I'm doing something wrong? I've been playing with Ubuntu and have noticed that only one version installs at one time, and the video playback is much better, if still not exactly smooth.
how to keep the scrollbars at the side and bottom of Firefox a contant width? They seem to change with the Full Zoom Level of NoSquint, which is a bit of a pain.
Is there any way to change the window scrollbars in 11.04 from the frankly annoying minimalist orange strip to the far more user friendly large bar with clickable arrows top and bottom?
I'm using Ubuntu Classic Desktop...if I really couldn't get on with this scrollbar...would I actually have to go back to the previous OS release?
I see on the website URl...screenshots number 5 and 6 -- what is used to to get these style of scrollbars? When I launch Opera I get a very ugly scrollbar that does not fit the look of the wm whatsoever.
This does not remove the top panel anymore. Relog and restart has been tried. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it? I'm using AWN, so the top panel isn't useful for me
Solved: So I just randomly thought of changing my login session to user defined, and voila! Panel gone Guessing logging into classic just won't let you log on without it.
I have two almost identical images of the same size that I want to compare. I'd like to over-lay them one on top of the other and vary each image's transparency so that I can compare them. Anyone know of any software that does this?
I wish to set up a PC based media server in our legion. I would like to run the cable feed through a TV card & then overlay service announcements onto the screen at scheduled times. I will buy a desktop box and add a tuner card. Ubuntu 10.04 is my OS of choice.
(problem happens across various chrome versions and firefox too)
and I visit a site with graphics, still image or ....., I get a screen overlay of the website image positioned near top left of my monitor which overlays its graphics on top of windows of other applications. Interestingly, when I kill chrome the image disappears, then reappears on re-launch of chrome. Somehow chrome is controlling the rendering of its video memory, from killed tabs, outside of its own window.
This I have seen for firefox as well. Its been happening for few months, not on every browser launch but daily nonetheless. The video corruption also prevents mouse cursor cut N paste of text on any application which happens to have its window overlayed in this manner.
I have all the latest updates
ubuntu 11.04 nvidia driver 270.41.19
screen captures of offending overlay do not show up, though I could photograph my screen if need be. Have stopped using beta chrome daily builds, now using default google chrome to verify whether symptoms disappear.
I see no apparent errors in system log or X server log
I have followed a few guides on using video overlays to obtain a watermark. i am suppose to use the Bluescreen video effect along with the composite transition in kdenlive.
I run the following versions of software: lucid lynx 10.04 FFMPEG compiled from svn x264 compiled from git Kdenlive 7.7.1 Kino 1.3.4 melt 0.5.6 from a PPA Medibuntu repos
My video I want the watermark over is a kino captured file which is dv avi type 2 (open dml).I have done Bluescreen video effect along with the composite transition but the video clip which the video watermark plays on top of ends up getting darker. for the bluescreen color i have chosen red which is the closest red i could pick next to the spinning logo. the lighting changes on it and gives it an undesirable effect as far as how dark it it. i tried other colors but then the logo either disappears or the spinning logos black video background covers up my video. the reason for my "video" watermark is because it is a spinning logo (not a picture) which can be obtained in .mp4 format here:[url]
My goal is to put that on top of some xbox 360 modern warfare 2 gameplay. i haven't uploaded an example of how dark it makes the footage look yet but it does.
Unsure of what caused this but please reference the screenshot to see my problem. I'm not using any special graphics driver, just whatever the distro decided to use upon install.
[theophan@porter ~]$ sudo uname -a Linux porter 2.6.38.8-35.fc15.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jul 6 13:58:54 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [theophan@porter ~]$ lspci |grep Radeon
I download DVDRip's, and as you know they have a small resolution. Now what i want is for the subtitles to show in the black part below the movie/picture, and not in the movie
I just set-up my fedora-14 live usb on an 8gb usb hard drive but I see the space left on '/' is less than 800mb (I created a 3.5gb persistent file) like so: Code: livecd-iso-to-disk --unencrypted-home --home-size-mb 3500 --overlay-size-mb 3500 Fedora-14-x84_64-Live-Desktop.iso /dev/sdc1 but I still don't have much space to install programs.
Is there a way to trick yum into installing programs under /home/liveuser/programs instead ?: Code: [liveuser@localhost ~]$ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/live-rw 3.0G 2.8G 223M 93% / tmpfs 1002M 352K 1002M 1% /dev/shm /dev/sdb1 7.4G 2.0G 5.1G 28% /mnt/live /dev/loop5 3.2G 130M 2.9G 5% /home varcacheyum 1002M 0 1002M 0% /var/cache/yum /tmp 1002M 92K 1002M 1% /tmp vartmp 1002M 0 1002M 0% /var/tmp
I finally dropped Gnome and am trying to put together my own custom Xclient-style desktop, with Xmonad as my WM. My question: Do any of the desktop widget systems out there support fixed, transparent overlay of the screen? My idea was something like this: I want, for example, my desktop clock widget not to be stuck in some dock taking up screen space; but instead, it would overlay the screen in one corner, with its background transparent. That way I could always see it, but it wouldn't gobble up screen space in a separate menu bar.
The process seems to be fine but when I boot I receive the message: "Unable to find persistent overlay using temporary" complaining about failing mount /overlay.
If I watch inside LiveOS/ I can find the overlay file: overlay-jimezam_lab-d9d04988-3b00-4a2d-8207-43007ac71ef1.
i have custom programs written in Basis pro5. Standard output to a pdf virtual printer works fine. Using pdftk to overlay on to a form is hit or miss.... There are products out there like Unform that are just too expensive for my company. i have purchased another product from a company that prints the forms to the laser perfectly but i am incapable of capturing them and saving them as pdf's for archiving/emailing/faxing and i don't much care for this company.
i am trying to get centos 5.4 installed and bootable on my 16gb flash drive, with persistent overlay using and ext3 formatted drive.i want to be able to boot into centos and be able to have all updates from yum, etc, saved when shutting down for my situation i cannot use vfat.
I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10 nicely over the last year and recently I found the avant-window-navigator, which I now use instead of gnome-panel.It's easy to make the changes in previous versions, I just had to go into gconf-editor, navigate to /desktop/gnome/required_components and change the "panel" key from gnome-panel to avant-window-navigator.
Now I am one of the many who despises Unity and put off the upgrade to 11.04, until I read that you can select Ubuntu Classic when logging in and not use Unity. No problem,I thought.I will just use Ubuntu Classic, make the same changes as before and not use Unity. But, this doesn't seem to work. The same keys are not present in gconf-editor and even if I add them they have no effect.
Log out and log in as Ubuntu classic, but still i get an Unity-desktop. I have also installed Unity-2d from synaptic. How do I know if the system has unity-2d or unity-3d? I have only an eeepc 900, so 3d get really slow
So if we don't like Unity or the way it crashes with alarming regularity, the fact that it requires multiple mouse clicks to do things we used to do with a couple and the fact that the launcher is not configurable in any meaningful way, we can always go back to Ubuntu Classic, right? Wrong!
Trying to enable desktop effects in Classic under amd64 and NVidia proves something of a nightmare.
1. There is no 'Desktop Effects' tab anymore. We are told that this is no longer necessary as Compiz is running by default.
2. Jockey reports that the NVidia driver is installed and that the driver is activated but 'not currently in use'. This is a bug and has been reported. However, this could tempt people to uninstall and re-install the driver (I am one of these) with disastrous results.
3. Trying to enable things like the Cube and Cube rotation break Compiz and remove *all* the settings in CCSM. Window menus and borders disappear and have to be restored by resetting the Window Manager to Metacity.
4. Getting applications like Radio Tray or Shutter to show in the System Tray involves circuitous circumventing of a 'Whitelist' (which is there for our protection because we shouldn't really want to use applications which put icons in the tray!) is really going to put off people installing applications which then apparently don't work. (They do work, they just become unusable because you cant see them or do anything with them!)
5. Skype will sometimes load and sometimes won't. Sometimes the sound is corrupted and sometimes not. Despite the fact that Skype is proprietary software, many people need to use it. If it becomes unreliable many people will look elsewhere or go back to Wingedows.
6. In both Unity and Classic the task bar will randomly freeze and become unresponsive, requiring a reboot.
Natty Narwhal? More like Natty Dread at the moment. I dread turning it on and it is dreadful. I'll try Gnome 3 or go back to 10.10. I can no longer recommend Ubuntu as a viable alternative to Windows to my customers.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04, to find that I don't like Unity. I want to get back to normal Gnome, but on the login screen, when I select "Classic mode", it gets into Unity anyway.
I also tried to un-check Unity Plugin in Compiz Settings, without success. "Classic mode (no effects)" works great, but like it says, there is no effects at all...
Hey all, I recently did a fresh install of 11.04 and decided to poke around with GNOME 3. Long story short it wasn't my cup of tea so I reverted with ppa-purge. Now, Unity isn't my cup of tea either so I like to use Gnome Classic but for some reason now I only have the options of Unity (Ubuntu) and Ubuntu Classic (No effects). Before I installed GNOME 3 I was able to log into Ubuntu Classic (with effects) just fine. I'm an average linux user, not pro but not completely nub so I would prefer to find a way of fixing this without re-installing Ubuntu if possible.
'm about to order an iPod 160gb classic and I was wondering if it plays nice with Iucid lynx and which song management app your using. I made use of the search functions and most posts that deal with the classic are a few years old. Just wanted to see if syncing the classic has been made easier in the past few years.
I've installed this new Ubuntu 11.04 and I must say its horrible. Not because of the "Unity", but lack of support for multiple monitors. They work in "Gnome Classic", but the problem is there is many bugs. First bug is that any windows I open do not have borders or title bars, and only open in top left corner of the screen. On top of that, I can't type anything in those opened screens like when I open terminal for example. Second bug is that I can't add any new items to panels on other separate screens. As soon as I try to add anything, I get the following errors. "Indicator Applet Complete" has quit unexpectedly. So 11.04 failed for me I'm afraid. At this point I can't use it. This is very said because I was looking forward in running new version of Ubuntu. Its very strange that Ubuntu programmers don't have multiple screens by now to test ubuntu properly. As for Unity, nothing to talk about there. Its pure "Vista" style like screw up. It only works well on laptop or single monitor. I guess all I can do now, is wait again for 11.10 and hope all bugs will be fixed by then to support multiple monitors like 10.10 does now. Also, this will teach me installing new ubuntu version every six months LOL With all the bugs new ubuntu version comes out .04 releases is not worth it. Better wait at least in till .04.1 comes or even .10 versions. fix "Gnome Classic" so it will support multiple screens again. I think its something to do with Compiz, because windows decorations is not working on separate screens.
Gave unity a try, did not like it, switched to classic. I had pretty much figured out eye candy in previous versions, but I can't change the window border in 11.04. If I enable emerald as the window decorator under compiz settings, I get a blank window border, regardless of which emerald theme I select. If I click the default under compiz settings and use compiz-decorator, I also get a blank window border. If I use gtk-window-decorator, I then have a proper window border, but I have no way to change it. With it, I can use appearance preferences and change themes, colors, icons, etc., but selecting different window borders under customize has no effect at all. I don't like the window border I'm stuck with, anybody know how to switch these in 11.04?
