I'm a old ubuntu user and It's a long time a have this problem (probably since Gutsy Gibbon) but just now I decided to ask for the community help to solve it, until now I fault every try.randomly, on my desktop and screen in general, appears something like confused characters composing strange writing, and the way to remove them is by selecting a empty area around them, dragging it with the left mouse button.
Those sort of writing appears everywhere on the screen but never over a open application area, those characters looks like a sort of refresh error that I'm unable to definitively remove. To let you better understand how this problem looks like, I link a snapshot of my desktop to show you the problem.

Alright, so I followed the step by step instructions from this page: [URL]. When I downloaded the file, the file appeared on my desktop as an unknown file with the name "ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386". I thought this was strange because it didn't have the ".iso" after it. I tried looking for a download location for the file that would give me a .iso file, but whenever I download the file it just appears on my desktop as "ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386". After that, I downloaded Infra Recorder, and followed those instructions. Everything was going fine and when the progress bar hit 100%, Infra Recorder gave me some kind of error.
I can't recall exactly what it said, but it said to check the log file or something like that. I wasn't sure what to do at this point, so I tried installing Ubuntu anyway. I rebooted with the CD and it took me to the burgundy screen and it started to load, but then the installation crashed to an MS DOS screen with some gibberish that I didn't understand. Obviously the CD I wrote didn't have all of the installation files it needed. What should I do? Is there something wrong with the file that I downloaded? My computer is a Dell Vostro 200 and I am running Windows XP.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex dual-booting with Vista for work purposes. I have been running the two successfully for quite a few months now and am just getting to grips with it. I have lost my desktop at start-up. I get all the way past the Login to a blank desktop background (just colour - no image) and the only thing visible is a Terminal window. As I am not familiar with Linux command lines I can't do very much. I have even tried reinstalling Ubuntu which showed no error messages that I noticed but, I have the same result. At the moment I have used Supergrub to allow me to boot straight to Vista till I get things sorted out.

as you can see, most icons are in the notification area, but skype and any programs with icons opened after appear always on top in the top left corner.
I've tried moving things about to no avail

I used Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and built a Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit VM using VMWare player. It's great, except it keeps reverting to a USA keyboard after each reboot. The host OS doesn't do this. The host was installed normally, but the guest was installed via the VMWare easy install thing which does everything for you.I've already set the location back to London, and I've added a UK keyboard to it, but still this odd reversion.I've googled and found other people reporting it but don't see any resolution.

No matter what I try, notifications do not appear. The notify-osd program is running (if I check ps) and nothing ever reports an error. I just don't see it, or hear it (does it make a sound?)
I think this might be because of my dual screen setup. I have two screens set up, with the screen on the right lower than the screen on the left so that they match up in real life.
This leaves a dead space above the right hand screen, perhaps its appearing in there? But I have already used notification-preferences to move it to the left (does that even work?) and still nothing. What's up? I rely on notifications to tell me that something's up, since the new "notification area" plugin does not flash and is thus utterly useless on this large screen display (design failure)

This issue has plagued ubuntu 10.04 on all my installations, PC and laptop, and is an infrequent annoyance that needs to be resolved. Basically, after boot up, i'll bring up a gnome window and the title bar will not be there. This means I can't click and drag windows easily, and do other things the title bar lets you do. Is there an easy fix to this that i'm not locating? Also i've tried restarting my X session, by logging out, and the problem persists until I restart the system. And even then the title bar may not load.

I set up some shares but df and Nautilus aren't bringing them up on the other computer. I must be missing something.
Here is how I set up the shares on the one system - "Compaq".
Installed nfs-kernel-server
Modified the nts-common and nfs-kernel-server files:
STATDOPTS="--port 32765 --outgoing-port 32766"
[Code]....
I've also run rpcinfo on the ASUS system but with the IP address of Compaq, getting the same results. Which is good right?
I can ping back and forth. I've successfully run SSH on the ASUS machine from the Compaq machine. I'm not sure what to do now. Could this be a permissions issue? I'm using the fist user on each system.

I use Pidgin as my IRC client. I set it to remember my passwords for the #linuxjournal and #ubuntu channels. As you can see in the picture, there is a tab titled Frigg. I don't know if Frigg is a user or bot or channel! How do I prevent it from appearing every time I start Pidgin? I closed it before but then it keeps coming back when I restart Pidgin!

Running 10.04 on Asus 1005 HA netbook. When AC power is plugged in the screensaver appears after the time specified. However, on battery power the screen goes blank.I have read a number of threads on this topic and have made changes to power management settings (On Battery Power mirroring On Mains Power)and Compiz Settings|General|Unredirect Fullscreen Windows enabled, with no success. This also occurred when running 9.10. Not sure if it is a bug or incorrect settings.

I seem to be having some issue with GRUB. I installed the kernel update just last night and when I went to turn on my computer today my entry to Win 7 was gone.I am able to boot into Lucid with ease but what happened to Windows 7 all of a sudden? I was using it just y-day and restarted to boot into Lucid to catch up on any updates.
It also appears that my 1 TB HDD isn't appearing either. Kernel update gone bad?

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS installed on an AMD K6-2 system. When logging in with LXDE, certain icons such as the HP Toolbox and the Update Manager do not appear on the LXDE Task Bar when they should. The HP icon should appear after logging in (It automatically does with XFCE.) For the HP icon to appear, I have to manually run HPLIP Toolbox.
The various Update Manager icons (gray - package manager working, orange - updates available, red - important updates available) also do not appear at all under LXDE automatically and the only way to see if there are any updates is to manually run Update Manager after a period of time, which should not be necessary. These same icons also automatically appear under XFCE.
Is there something that I can look at to see why these are not appearing? I know there is a file /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Under "Desktop Session Settings", the only two items listed are Screensaver and PolicyKit Authorization Agent, neither of these are checked. When adding hp-toolbox to the autostart file, it completely launched the HP Toolbox in addition to displaying the icon.
I only want the icon to appear and would launch hp-toolbox as needed. The only icons that appear automatically after an LXDE login, are the Network Connection, ScreenLock and Shutdown icons. It does not appear to be kernel-dependent as I had both the generic and 386 kernels installed on this (now have only the 386 installed) and the icons did not appear with either kernel used.

for some reason the update manage isn't appearing on the taskbar when I have updates available.I've set it so that it should notify me if updates are available, but nothing's happening =/.Also, when I *do* download updates through it, I'm lucky if I can get more than a 10Kb/s download - yet everything else works fine.

Old HP computer, came with XP, installed Ubuntu 8.03, upgraded to 9.10, installed xubuntu-desktop for speed.
Ever since I've started dual-booting Ubuntu with Xp, I've been able to access my XP partition by going to Places-HP_PAVILION, which has always been mounted at /media/HP_PAVILION, but recently, within the last few days or so, it hasn't been appearing anywhere. I'm still able to mount it if it use # mount /dev/sda2 /*mount point*, but that's a pain, and I'd rather not use a workaround if I don't have to. Any suggestions? I'd really prefer if it mounted to /media/, and had it's own shortcut in the Places menu, like flash drives, memory cards, and such get. I've tried my Flash Drive, and that does everything it's supposed to.

I have an unusual request for help. I asked this question on the Backtrack forums, but they were I have a dualboot of Ubuntu 9.04 and Backtrack 4 on my laptop. Backtrack 4, for those that don't know, is a security penetration testing distro based on Ubuntu with a KDE environment. It basically IS ubuntu, but with some changes, so I figured I'd ask this here. The menu in backtrack has been stripped of it's "Games" folder, as well as some other folders. so when I use "add/remove applications" to install a game it doesn't put a shortcut to it in a Games directory. I tried adding a Games directory to the menu bar myselff, but when I try to install a game, the installer still doesn't see it and put a shortcut there. How can I fix this so that it does?

I recently had a Windows Vista laptop crash and burn because of some damage done to all the lovely files Windows cannot boot without. Since my computer cannot boot from USB normally I used PloP Bootmanager to get it to boot from a live Ubuntu image on a USB stick. Before I install Ubuntu, I want to recover some of my files sitting on the disk, and the partitions seem to mount in the GUI- I can see them, I can click mount or unmount and it responds. The trouble is that while I can see all of the folders on the Windows partition: Program Files, Documents and Settings, etc. I can't see any of the actual files. The disk itself is reported to have data on it- even Ubuntu recognizes it's almost full, but every folder has 0 files with the exception of /media/[A particular character string] which has three boot-related files. This is true whether I use bash as root or not. I've tried mounting to a different point and remounting via the terminal using ntfs-3g and editing the fstab file to recognize the parition with full permissions, but nothing seems to work.
