General :: Automation - Good Console-based Program To Automatically Manage Music Collection?

May 31, 2011

I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.

If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.

Ubuntu :: How To Scan Discs With Gnome Catalog

May 18, 2010

I had used Discs cataloguing software on the Mac and Windows too, so I'm not new to the concept. However I'm a total rookie when it comes to Linux and Gnome Catalog
Once you have created a new catalog, and a disk inside it (I guess), how do you get Gnome Catalog to perform the actual scanning of the discs? I just don't see any button or menu command for it anywhere

Ubuntu Installation :: Package Catalog Repair Failing

Oct 1, 2010

I am running a 64bit 10.10 with gnome. Its pretty much a fresh install. I saw a project called CAINE, it looked neat so I'd thought I'd give it a try, something in the installation mucked up. Now when I open the Software center I get a message telling me "Items can no be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired" I click repair and I get this error message: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the caine-from-deb package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.:So I thought I'd give it a go using synaptic package manager, it gives me these error messages: E: caine: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2 E: caine-from-deb: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2.I am currently unable to install or update any software at the moment so I really need help to get this fixed.

OpenSUSE :: Any Disk Catalog Application In 11.3 Distribution?

Dec 3, 2010

Is there a Disk Catalog application in the opeSUSE 11.3 distribution? If there is, I can't seem to find it. Data has been accumulating on various media for 20 years. Organization is a real problem since it is on everything from floppies to CDs to DVDs to flash drives to external hard drives to internal hard drives on 3 computers. File systems range from DOS to FAT to NTFS to ext3 (ext4 coming).

I just spent 6 hours searching CDs manually to find a picture of a distant relative who died. His children remembered the picture and wanted a copy. Now every surface in my office is covered with old CDs I have to put away somewhere. Surely there is a better way. I need something that will organize file names, dates and media so I can search for it.

I have looked at Gnome Catalog and GTK disk Catalog but they haven't been updated in a long time and don't seem to be included with openSUSE 11.3. That makes me suspect they have problems of some sort. Is that a reasonable assumption or should I conclude they are mature products that don't need updating? Has anyone here used them?

Software :: Validate LDAP Authentication Against AD Global Catalog Servers?

Jan 10, 2011

We're trying to validate LDAP authentication from Linux against our AD global catalog servers. I'm seeing lots of LDAP query tools, but what I need is a free/open source application that can use LDAP to query AD to authenticate... something as simple as entering the hostname/IP of our AD/global catalog server and the port, then passing an AD username/password to it to validate logon capability. Anyone know of any software/apps that can do this? I don't want to get into configuring Samba for LDAP or trying to authenticate my actual Linux server again AD... I just want an application that uses LDAP for authentication.

Software :: Printable File Catalog Or Index For (external) USB And Flash Drives

Aug 29, 2010

Can anyone point me to already built and mostly working utilities that will catalog the contents of (external) USB and flash media in a way that they might be searched? With cheap (under $100 US) terabyte external drives, it is too easy to get another drive and fill it. I'm looking for utilities or applications that will help me know what I have, cull the duplicates, and avoid the need to spin a drive just to see if it holds what I seek.

Years ago there were utilities that would read the contents of diskette media and create a printable "index" or "catalog" page. The pages were conveniently sized to match the diskette so that one could store the page in the diskette sleeve for future reference.Later, the pages got replaced with applications that stored a disketter ID along with each file name. One could then search for a name, or pattern, and discover which diskette held the file(s) of interest. Today we don't have diskette sleeves, but we do have cases for our external USB drives and wallets for our flash media. A printed index would be nice to have.

Ubuntu One :: Does 'entire Music Collection' Mean Only Up To 50GB?

Oct 21, 2010

I have a few questions in regards to the music streaming service offered.

1. Does "entire music collection" mean only up to 50GB?
2. I can't sync off my external USb harddrive. Is there a way to do this. my entire music collection is on the external HD.
3.If i move music to from my external HD to the ubuntu one folder am I actually copying the file to my netbook harddrive or is it only a pointer? I have limited harddrive space on the netbook.
4. If I have to actually move files from my ext harddrive to the ubuntu one folder I may need to delete folders because of limited space. Anyway to prevent syncing so the folders uploaded do not get deleted from cloud.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Amarok 2.3.0 Does Not Show Itunes Collection?

May 7, 2011

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (yes I'm a bit slow on the update), Amarok no longer displays or plays my itunes collection.

the Itunes collection is on a separate drive in a dual boot configuration (Win XP Pro). Drive is mounted and I can navigate to the music directory in the file browser. Also Amarok can see the directory when I try to rescan my collection.

When I rescan the collection - drilling down to the correct directory - amarok appears to be scanning the diretory. However when it is complete, the collection header (in the local music view) shows the music share with a track count, but the sub directories (album, artist, etc.) is empty.

I have removed and re-installed Amarok, and cleaned up the itunes directory - no change in the behavior.

Amarok reliably played the itunes collection in previous ubuntu distros (9.01, 9.04, 8.10, etc...).

What do I need to do to get the collection visible?

Software :: Thoughts On Reorganizing MP3 Collection?

Mar 14, 2010

Last spring I graduated college. I lived in a party house, and being skilled in computers, I decided to build a media center for me and my five roomies. The thing worked great; MythTV for television, and a thin client in the kitchen to DJ the music. I had a samba share available so my room mates could just dump their music collection from their machines on to the media center. Adding new songs was their problem, and not mine. As you can imagine, nobody really wanted to organize the music to well. Many of them just dumped in the tunes and then searched for it in GMPC (a great interface for MPD by the way).

So over a year later, I have 150GB+ of music which is mostly unorganized. I need a way to put some order to the chaos... I tried using EasyTag for a while. Don't get me wrong, it's a great program. But sorting through every directory and song would take me DAYS, time I just don't have.I need a way to SAFELY rename and organize all of the music into a logical file structure. My initial thought was to just connect an external hard drive, copy it all into iTunes on some laptop, and then recopy the then organized iTunes database back onto the media center.
