can not connect to internet, nm-applet just tells me interface not ready for both wlan0 and eth0, if i plug eth0 in it will not connect to the internet, I would like to fix this without re-install networkmanager-gnome is broken but when i try to install the deb from flash drive ubuntu software center tells me i need to fix package catalog, but it cant fix it without internet access.

I saw a project called CAINE, it looked neat so I'd thought I'd give it a try, something in the installation mucked up. Now when I open the Software center I get a message telling me "Items can no be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired" I click repair and I get this error message: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the caine-from-deb package. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. On Friday 6th I was having a play with Apache2 running on the Dell Precision on Suse 11.1. I have had a local development webserver for some time to test websites before uploading them a host server. I had wanted to test the DHCP & DNS functions for some time, and this seemed like a good opportunity. But I ran into some problems and decided to un-install the DHCP & DNS. I intended to install a VM and re-install the Apache server on it, to make it easier to troubleshoot.Unfortunately my internet connection on that box is now broken, but only with the Suse 11.1 install. The other 3 O/S's all work fine, and the rest of my machines are all good. In fact the Suse 11.1 install can communicate across the LAN, and print to both the network printers, it just won't connect to the Internet. Turning off the firewall doesn't do anything, and reconfiguring the NIC in YaST doesn't help.
I suspect that there is a config file somewhere with faulty info, but I can't find it. If searched everything that was changed on that date.I have been searching this forum, LinuxQuestions forums, and Googling for 2 days with no real success. I found some interesting threads which I thought would help but so far no luck. I can ping all the interfaces on my LAN, but anything outside is blocked. I thought it might be in the BT HomeHub but that works fine and all the boxes can connect except with the Precision running 11.1.
I posted this already in the absolute beginner section, but no answer was found, so I thought I might try this place..Long story as short as possible:
- I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for a friend who was fed up with WinXP crashing all the time
- After the install, networks was broken. I could ping sites outside the LAN, could connect to the router via firefox, but NO application could access the web. - The router works just fine, I tried with my own notebook.
- Disabling ipv6 in grub (edit /etc/default/grub and 'sudo update-grub') seemed to solve the problem.
- Then update the standard packages + install restricted extras and boom, Network gone: No ping to sites outside the LAN, no nothing. Still can connect fine to the router and even the remote desktop connection works, connecting over the internet. But that's it.
I have tried setting the mpu to a value recommended by my isp, I have set static ip and dns, I really don't now what to try any more.
i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?

OKay i installed the brand new OPENSUSE DVD, everything installed ok, but then i got to the internet problem, well connection problem. 1. I am going through a router to a att dsl modem. so i use a static ip as my desktop and my xbox 360 are both connected and both working fine, the router is a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router. my labtop is a acer with a realtek family Ethernet series model. so i tried just about everything and nothing works, so i switched to traditional and turned off the network manager, and it tried to load smpdd or something and couldnt get it from the dvd drive that was mounted even though i had used the drive 10 minutes ago to INSTALL THE OS. so them i went back to square one and tried a reinstall, but when i try to setup the connection on the install, the ip static doesnt work, i even plugged the thing directly into the modem and went to automatic dhcp settings- and still nothing.

I just recently installed ubuntu, my first experience with linux. I don't know if it isn't recognizing my wireless card or if it is another issue, but I am unable to view any wireless networks/connect to any. When I click on the network icon it says "wireless" with Device Not Ready underneath.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to connect to the Internet using 64-bit lucid, and I'm in quite the foggy situation. The computer recognizes the wireless card, but can not use it to connect to the Internet. here are some screenies:
First: The toolbar app: "Device is not ready"
Second: The terminal. shows that card is a Realtek 8192 (e se or u etc. I'm not quite sure) Also shows a bit of other stuff.
Third: Network Connections software: not very helpful. No connection at all.
So my question is... What seems to be wrong and how do I fix it (eg. do I have to install a driver of some sort, change some settings around or write some fancy code etc.?)
The problem seems to appear with the following packages:openoffice.org-commonopenoffice.org-coreant it said before that the broken package is python-uno.I uninstalled openoffice completely and now when I try to install it again from synaptic, it goes:

I have installed a package that doesn't work on my system because some dependency is not met and I cannot resolve that without seriously breaking my system. I just want to get to the point where apt isn't returning errors, because at some point I will want to upgrade to 10.04. This is just too risky with broken apt.
I tried to upgrade my pc from 9.10 to 10.04 version with the alternative cd as the update manager was not showing the new release. There were some problem in installation and the process stopped somewhere. Then, when I tried with the update manager I got some error.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?
One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.
