Ubuntu :: How To Make Primary OS

May 17, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu here in my pc, so I'm getting used to it; and, I'm planning on making it my primary OS. Aside from Ubuntu, I've got Windows 7 installed, I didn't like it, it was kinda buggy, so, I'd like to uninstall it. But I don't know how to uninstall windows 7 without reformatting, because I don't want to lose Ubuntu.I was actually going to format, and just install Ubuntu by booting, but there's something wrong with my pc because every time I burn the *.iso image file of Ubuntu that I downloaded on the site, it says that it can't read the data on the CD, I've tried it like, five times, using different CD's and burning programs but, no luck. An error message will also appear about 'not being able to read the cd' when I double click it. I even read the page here about burning Ubuntu *.iso into a cd, I did everything step by step but, still no luck.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Make Laptop Primary Monitor In 11.3?

Jul 23, 2010

I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Dell studio laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 4500 graphics card and everything worked straight out of the box.

Now.. I am connecting my tv through HDMI cable as second monitor. Basically I just want to play movies on my tv while still having the laptop screen free to work. This also works, I just plugged it in and I had two screens.

My problem is that my tv is the primary monitor so basically my laptop background (and all the buttons that go with it) moves to the tv and my laptop background is just a background. See attached image at the bottom of this post(Laptop on the left and tv on the right).

This is exactly what I want but the other way around. I can't seem to change this in System Settings/Display. Is there a file somewhere I can change this?

General :: Make A DRBD Node Start Itself As A Primary Node Automatically?

After each bootup, I need to run the following on the master machine:

Code:

Do we need to specify which machine should be the primary node every time? Is there any method to make the machine "know" it's itself the primary node?

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 * 13317 14621 10482412+ 83 Linux

OpenSUSE Install :: Remove The 11.2 Grub And Make The 11.1 Grub Master Again?

Jun 7, 2010

I have installed 11.2 next to my 11.1 version I have a few big problems with 11.2 and I like to completely remove it. there are 2 grub's active now. I want to remove the 11.2 grub and make the 11.1 grub master again, but I do not know where to change this, the MBR points to the 11.2 grub and changing menu.lst probably does not have any effect.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Grub EFI Will Not Make/use A Grub.cfg

Apr 22, 2010

I was able to make a grub.efi boot loader finally. But in the end it did not make or generate a grub.cfg, so every time i boot using this loader I get the grub bash shell and nothing else. I tried copying the on from my harddrive to the EFI folder on my flash drive but still nothing.

What i did was compile the loader from source using the directions here, then formated a 4 GB flash drive to gpt, and a fat32 File system. Then moved all of the grub items to /efi/grub. Once done i then rebooted, booted to a rEFIt cd and then used it to boot to the USB (the folder is not blessed yet). Then once i got to the loader screen its just a EFI screen, no boot choice Nothing... just a recovery bash. What am i doing wrong... did i do a step wrong, did i compile wrong? What?! could some on PLEASE tell me how to get the EFI grub to make/use a grub.cfg file!

Ubuntu :: Make Seven To Boot After Installing Xp By GRUB

Apr 17, 2010

At first I apologize if my question isn't so Ubuntu-related. I had Win7 installed on my first partition. Before installing xp (on second partition), I toke a backup of MBR (actually first 63 sectors) by dd utility. Later i installed xp. You may know, it doesn't know seven and makes it un-bootable. Then I restored MBR. But I surprised because xp still boots up. whats the problem? BTW what I want to do now is to multi boot xp and seven. Is there any work around, something like a hack using GRUB boot loader to be able boot the both?

General :: Make GRUB Automatically Boot Ubuntu

Feb 17, 2011

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.

I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Does Grub Make Copy Of Contents Of MBR?

Feb 26, 2011

My system is an Acer Aspire One Happy netbook. It runs Windows 7 OEM. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which works fine. Unfortunately, I put GRUB in the MBR (I wanted it on Ubuntu partition in order to use Win 7 bootloader). Acer netbooks seem to have a particular MBR (in order to run e-Recovery Management), which is different to the standard Windows 7 MBR.

Moreover, in the internet there are instruction to restore Acer MBR, but they do not seem useful, since I do not find the MBRWRWIN.EXE and RTMBR.BIN files on the hidden partition. Is there a way to tell GRUB to remove itself and restore the previous content of the MBR (something like the old "lilo -u")? Does GRUB make a copy of the content of the MBR before installing itself? Where is it, if it is so?

General :: DOS Partition Won't Boot With GRUB / Make It Possible?

Oct 4, 2010

I'm trying to install MS Windows from my Linux box. Because I have no CD drives nor USB ports, I can't use any live media to boot the computer and install Windows from the installation disk. So I've created a FAT partition and copy DOS files on that, so that I can boot this partition and install Windows from there. But the problem is I still haven't able to get it to boot.

Here's the output of fdisk -l code...

I created the partition by using cfdisk to format it as type 0B: WIN95 FAT32, and made dos filesystem on it using:

Code:
mkfs.msdos /dev/hda1
But when I reboot and select the DOS entry in GRUB, it tells me that:
"This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and press any key to try again."

what I'm missing or doing wrong here? Do I need to change something on the MBR of hda1 etc...
