Ubuntu :: Permissions On Files Moved To Comp From Smb Share?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 running here and a Windows 7 desktop. I'm using samba to share files and folders. I have full read/write access to the 7 box, and vice versa. However, whenever a user of the 7 box drops a file on my Desktop, for example (it could be any of my shared directories), it always has a padlock on it and I have to chown it before I can move or delete it.Can anyone tell me how to get myself permanent ownership of these files? I'm pretty sure I had this problem once before, and it was an issue of adding myself to a particular group, but I forget.

How to set the default file permissions on ALL newly created files in linux - but differs in important ways:
I want all files created in (or copied to or moved to) a certain directory to inherit a set of default permissions that is different from the system default.
Rationale: The directory in question is the "intake hopper" for an application. Users in a group place files in the directory, and the app (running under another user id in the same group) takes them and processes them. The problem is that the owner of each file placed in the directory is the user that placed it there, and the permissions are defaulting to "rw-r--r--"; I want to change that to "rw-rw----". The app doing the intake can't do that explicitly, because the user id the app is running under doesn't own the file in question, and the default permissions don't allow the app to chmod on the file! Obviously, the user could do a chmod after putting the file there - but I want to keep the "drop" by the user as simple as possible. (These folks are not linux-literate, they just drag and drop the files from their windows desktop to a (Samba) network share - i.e. they don't even know they are interacting with a linux system.)
umask seems too powerful: I don't want to set default permissions for every file created anywhere by these users - just those created in (or placed in) this directory.

After what feels like weeks have tinkering around trying to get a Samba file server set up, I've finally given up! I have 4 drives and 2 groups:
1) Dev - Available to all users in both groups (normal and admin)
2) Misc - Available to users in admin group only
3) Admin - Available to users in admin group only
4) Accounts - Available to users in admin group only
Drives 1 and 2 are working fine, with the correct access rights. Drives 3 and 4 can be browsed by admins only, but no changes can be made at all - files & directories can't be renamed/moved/deleted. What is most confusing is that Drive 2 is set up exactly the same as Drives 3 and 4. The process I went through to get them working:

I have noticed a really bad problem on here that i never had on windows 7 even with overclocking.
It seems the fans stay on and are basically idling or are at minimum speed and the computer and graphics cores are just idling at 99c which is really dangerous, but not critical yet since this is an alienware laptop and the technician did say its temperature rating is above that.
The problem is I need to get the multiple fans in the case to start up and cranking like they do to keep the system really cool in windows 7. I kinda wanna get this fixed ASAP as i dont want to constantly be running at this temperature.

First off. I'm not using Ubuntu Server. But I'm trying to get XAMPP set up so I can test Wordpress themes I make. Using 9.10. I got XAMPP installed using the Instructions from Apache Friends. When I went to Localhost I got the language page. Selected English but nothing happened.

Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation :-( I searched and found a couple Index.php files. Deleted one. And now when I go to localhost I get a "Index of" page.I removed the XAMPP folder, Deleted Apache, PHP from Synaptic(They got reinstalled when i reinstalled XAMPP btw). Installed LAMP but it still does it. Maybe reinstall XAPP and copy the index.php files from another Comp?.

If I move a file to the trash,I can restore it later.But if I empty the trash,I'll be warned that I cannot recover the files if I proceed.Is this really true or are there Linux applications for recovering files deleted from the trash?Uhm...are the files deleted completely and unrecoverably or are there any traces left behind?

I had bad experience with disk checking in windows. Boot checker just moved all more and more of my files to a hidden folder without me knowing. I lost a lot of photos due to this. Afterwards when I checked that folder I found that most of the files were intact and I was able to open them without a problem. How dumb is that a program moves files without your permition to do so So I'm wondering what happens with files on Ubuntu if they get corrupted or are suspected as corrupted? And how can I know if the automatic checking procedure that runs when booting found any corrupted files, bad sectors etc... ?

Long story short, my Windows had a fatal crash the other day and since I couldn't find the installation disk, I burned the Ubuntu 9.10 disk image to a CD at a friend's place and installed it on one partition of the hard drive. The other partition contained tons of Windows programs and documents in an NTFS system. Ubuntu is cool and all, but when I finally found the Windows disk, I wanted to reinstall it for dual-booting, to use some programs that don't run well in Wine.
To keep some documents safe and not waste any CDs, I moved them over to the Ubuntu partition before installing Windows. As experienced ubuntuists know, the slightly clumsy Windows installer erases GRUB in the process, and it's recommended to install Windows first. So, now I ended up with a working Windows partition and an Ubuntu partition with all of the stored data, which I can access via guest status with the burned CD.
Here's the catch though - as a guest and without Linux properly installed I can't move anything I moved to the Linux partition from the Windows partition back anymore. All the folders have a little X on their top corner. I'd be glad to reinstall Ubuntu now, but I must know how to keep all that tranferred data safe. Can I keep it there during the reinstallation? Should I install Wubi on Windows and access the stuff through it?

Initially, I was trying to get around a Nautilus log in error. Using this, I was able to log in, but I entered what seems to be a perfectly clean version of Ubuntu...with no access to my files. [URL].... Now, I can't seem to find any of my original files. Some of the commands I entered in the terminal included:

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

I have a Fedora 12 box with a fresh install. I use ktorrent to download something, eg a series, into my home folder. Now, as root, I move (not copy) the folder with the downloaded files to /var/www/html/bob so that when someone opens http://myserver/bob/ they see the list of folders and files I have placed there. I also chmod the whole folder to 755 and chown to root.root. The folder I have just moved there is not displayed. So to work around it (before I realised it was SELINUX) I created a new folder. Now the folder is visible. Good. So now I move the files into the new folder and delete the old one. The files are displayed ... good. But wait, there's more: you cannot access (download) the files, even though they are visible.
1. How do I VIEW what context is assigned to these files?
2. How do I correct the context so that http server can allow people to access them?
3. How do we get the SELINUX authors to consider re-labeling files when they are moved from one place to another so as not to cause this fault?

When I am deleting pictures using gThumb image viewer it asks "The selected images will be moved to Trash, are you sure?" And if I press "yes" button - it moves message to ~/.Trash, can it be configured to move them into "real" trash? I have created symbolic link and it solved part of my problems, but files "restore" option is unavailable to files which were moved in to trash by this method.

i have an old desktop that i have decided to use as a central point for localhost/website files. I have 2 laptops, a ubuntu and vista, and i want them both to be able to see the public_html folder on my desktop, and be able to create/update folders and files.
I have set up the samba sharing and that's working fine, but when i create folders using my laptop, they are not writeable to the desktop or other laptop because my laptop is the creator. Is there a way that I can set it so that whenever folders/files are created from either laptop, they have full permissions?

When I create a new folder on my ubuntu machine and share it with my windows 7 machine using 'net usershare add <dir> <path>', I can't get write perms in Win 7. It keeps giving me a "You need permission to perform this action'. I've chmod the folder to 777 but still no luck.
The funny thing is, it was all working fine until I tried to add a new usershare yesterday (Can't think what I've changed). I use this sharing method to share all of my development /var/www/ folders so I can work on them from my win machine.
I have had a few problems with my samba smb.conf, and it nuked and rebuilt yesterday. I'm fairly new to the Linux game, and this permissions problem has me baffled.

I am trying to set up a Samba share on one of my machines where I am the owner and a special group manages permissions for read-only access ( me:specialgroup ). If I log into the share as me, there is no problem (I have read/write privs as per usual). However, I am not able to log into the share using any of the group members (there is only one currently). That user is not able to access the share (failed to mount).
The folder (which is the share) is owned by me:specialgroup and the permissions have been forced down the folder. Samba is set to Share this folder with no guest or others write access.

I'm having a problem changing permissions on a network share. The share is mounted on my server using cifs. It has been working perfectly for a week or more. I use a bash script to copy files from a temporary folder on the server to folders on my HTPC that are mounted on my server.The server is Ubuntu Server 10.04 and the HTPC is XBMC Live Dharma.
The problems began when I added chmod lines to my bash script to temporarily change permissions. I had the entire mounted share set to 777 on the server, and I was worried that I might accidentally delete the files or something, so I set it to 555 and then modified my script. This was not intended to be a permanent solution, but I wanted to use it as a band-aid solution until I figured out how to do it properly. The mounted folder is called "tabitha" and it is mounted in the home folder of the user "turvy" on the server.The script looks like this:

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.
(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

what I am trying achieve is read/write access for my MS domain account and read-only access for everyone else. In smb.conf I have this:

I can access this fine with my MS domain account, what I can't work out is how to give others read-only access to the same share. I guess I could create a second share for the same folder with a different name and permissions, but that seems a bit clunky and I'd have to remember to pass on a different name to the one I am using. I also tried using the Nautilus right-click "Sharing options" and then setting the folder permissions. This works fine for giving others read-only access, but loses capitalisation of the share name and doesn't seem to recognise my MS domain account as being valid.

I'm trying to set up my samba server so that all the shares are visible to everybody but that some shares can only be accessed by certain users. I have a folder Video that everybody can access without a username or password. I now want to create a share that only I can access called webserver.

I have already installed Samba and created a local user on the server for myself.
I am at the point where I need to create the share to / and give my user read/write to it.
Additionally if possible I would like for it to be a hidden share for additional security.

It seems that by default a Windows share mounted at /mnt/Windows/ will be owned by root and have 755 permissions set on all files. I usually do a chown or chmod to allow my user to have write access to these files. Does that affect the Windows files in any way? It takes quite some time to complete the chown/chmod when there's a lot of data. Where is the Linux permission data kept for the Windows share? On the Linux computer where I set the permissions? I just want to get a better understanding how this works.

i have setup a samba server and created samba shares on it, i have configured the samba server to authenticates users from a windows server 2003 DC,
i have 2 shares call IT and MYSHARE, I want to give read and write permissions to sevaral users to those two shares and read only permisson to all the other users.
i tried editing the smb.conf file with the following settings , but no one can write or modify the files in the shares including the users specified in the

I have a couple of user accounts where each member belongs to a group i have created: Each user access the share using their own user account credentials.
How can I configure Samba in a way so that each modification done on the share gets the owner of the user and my group instead of the user and the users own group? I would also like the access rights to be 770 to each modification.
In other words, today each modification by "userA" get the owner "userA.userA" and I would like it to be "userA.MyGroup" with "rwxrwx---" permissions.

am trying to sync data from Server A to Server B. The destination on Server B is a CIFS share and I need to preserve timestamps, permissions, etc. on all the data that I transfer. During the rsync process, I receive thousands of errors like the one below:
rsync: chown "/LBDCASAN001/JasonHarper/files/1259810304676/2010-12-22-01-00-03/0x22/0xc8/0x43/0x0a" failed: Permission denied (13)
I'm not sure if it's related at all, but my mount point on Server B has the permissions set as: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root when it is unmounted. When I mount the CIFS share, the mount point permissions change to: drwxrws---+ 3 root root
Also, here is the line from my /etc/fstab that mounts the share:
//X.X.X.X/LBXXXXX001 /LBXXXXX001 cifs username=LBXXXXX001,password=XXXXXXX!,uid=0,gid=0 0 0
When I perform the rsync, I'm authenticating to Server B from Server A as root.

I'm studying Linux and just started reading about permissions and ownership. My question is how would you have multiple users or groups given access to a certain directory? When doing an ls -l I see the owner, group and others that have permissions that have access to the file or directory. But what if I need multiple different groups access to a particular file or directory all with different permissions?
