Ubuntu :: Part Of Wireless Icon Blacked Out
Jun 30, 2010
I did a clean install of Lucid about three weeks ago. All fine and dandy except a couple of minor quirks that I can live with if not resolvable since everything else is flying! After I installed part of the Wireless icon had a small vertical black strip over it blacking it out. Didn't affect fuctionality but looked funny. If I reinstalled the Icon from " add to panel" and the associated indicator applet the missing chunk was one. But it would always reappear after boot up. Then after a few days the problem vanished and has never come back!
Now though I get this: Immediately after boot up the field in the top panel that contains the wireless icon is surrounded by a dotted line, like its a dotted square around it. Also in the bottom panel there is a dotted line around the field for the Windows List" indicator button even though at that point there's nothing minimised to the bottom panel. This phenomena only occurs immediately after boot up and as soon as I click somewhere on the desktop or the wireless icon they vanish and stay gone I'll fix it if I can but if not I can cope.

Now i want to use ubuntu icon but i just want to change the icons of the folders only. Can anybody direct me to the folder where the default ubuntu "Humanity" icons are stored?
I only want to replace the humanity folder with the new folder icon which i found.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on a laptop of mine, and also a desktop. On this laptop, it's a clean install and I'm having a weird issue with the panel on the top of thescreen.ometimes when I start up the computer and login, I get two noticeable quirks. Instead of having the wireless icon in the tray next to the volume, I have two volume controls next to each other. The one icon, that takes place of the wireless icon, is not functional. The other volume icon functions as normal.
The other quirk is that my power button, used for choosing to logout, shutdown, etc, isappears. Instead, it shows two of my username next to each other (one is the legitimate one that lets you set your away status and such). And in place of the power button, is another username menu, but it is cut off by the edge of the screen and doesn't function.Has anybody had this problem before? Is there some kind of package I can update or reinstall to try fixing this? Sometimes the power button will be fine, but the volume icon will still double up.

Kwallet is off. Then I install a wireless device under WPA. Wired icon starts to change to wireless icon, but does not and goes back to wired icon. Hovering pointer over wired icon shows wired device installed as well as wireless device. How do I keep the wireless icon in place after installing WPA to wireless device?

3 computers in the house run various windows based programs and everything is fine with them connecting to the internet as far as putting in the security password to log in and get online. My old back up computer that I use in the basement that has Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine with the secured network situation up until today.I booted up the computer this morning and it automatically connected as it typically does and I was reading some email and then the computer froze, which on rare occasions it does.
Upon reboot I got a window that asked for the password for the Network Manager Applet which I supplied and then it asked for the password for the secured internet connection which I supplied. It would not connect. After numerous tries of disabling the wireless and enabling the wireless and entering the Network Manager Applet password and the secured internet password I still get no connection.
I notice that when it is trying to connect, the window comes up on the screen that shows that there is reception from the modem, but there is also a little "lock" icon like I'm locked out of the connection.I finally found a way to get rid of the Network Manager Applet password problem but that still didn't alleviate the connection problem.

I'm trying to figure out how to access the local part and the domain part of an email address in postfix's main.cf. For example, myname@mydomain.net has myname as the local part and mydomain.net as the domain part.I get the whole email address with %s. I want to speed up the lookups by writing better database queries.I've had no luck finding this in the otherwise well documented postfix.

I want them all to be accessed via same web site . some of the server in our network are embedded devices.they have their specific utility being hosted on that machine. I just installed openSUSE dual-boot with windows. Wireless works fine on windows. Only ethernet works on openSUSE. At first, it couldn't even find my wireless network. With my friend's help we experimented and tried everything to find the driver for my broadcam4312 driver.
Later, my friend some update from the official openSUSE peeps... Then, the wireless could my network. I entered in my password and then hoped for the best but then it got stuck on the Obtaining IP Adress part. I know I got the rite password.

One of our home school students, toying with the Power Management panel on our 700mHz iMac since there are no brightness control keys that work on it, set it for full display blackout and now can't get the screen back since we can't see the controls. We turned the machine off and on but his account keeps blacking out on log-in though it doesn't happen with other accounts. How can we fix this to retrieve all his work?

Long story short, been using Debian for 2+ years. Recently did a Clean install of Jessie (which worked fine). I wanted to test out Ubuntu 14.04 so I distro hopped for a couple weeks. Now I'm back on Debian Jessie (did a clean install again).
Problem is: Everything works fine, but after the computer runs for a while (like 2+ hours) any new program windows that I open are completely blacked out. Just like opening a big square black tile. They are unusable until I restart the computer, then everything works fine again for another 2+ hours.
I've never had this problem before, not even with my previous clean installation of Jessie. This time I installed it in the same way that I did the last time.

Assuming I was connected fully to a wireless network, the icon should have a check mark or something instead of a shitty "!" mark. It's horrible, is this supposted to happen?

I just installed Ubuntu - i've find a number of annoying bugs. Here is one of them.I created a user account for my wife - She was set up as an administrator with full access to everything (including wireless, internet, etc etc.)The top tool panel on MY desktop has the Speaker Icon - And to its left is a Wireless Internet Icon, which I use to connect to the internet and manage internet options. On my Wifes desktop - its not there. There is just three horizontal lines one ontop of the other. This is the icon for the "Notifications Icon" I have tried nm-whatever it was and It tells me an instance of it is already running.

When I right click on the wireless icon (the four bars, which are empty and have an X by them now). I click information about the connection, and it says "no active valid connection found" (or something like that, it's in spanish).I right clic and clic "edit connections" and it shows me five tabs: cabled, wireless, broad band, vpn, and dsl. The wireless tab is empty, there are no connections.I looked at ubuntu help, and it says to put this in terminal:Quote:sudo lshw -C networkand that it should say either "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"but instead it says, really fast,CPUIDPCI (sysfs)(and something else too fast to read)I put in another series of commands to the terminal to give information-- I read these on another post, that they're necessary for someone (you! I hope) to tell me what's wrong and how to fix it.
(I got these results by copying them and putting them on a USB, obviously)any ideas would be welcome!!(in non technical language if possible, I don't know much about computers, though I'm learning!)

There's an exclamation point next to my wireless icon up at the top which concerns me. I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday - absolutely love it. The only problem is that I'm having trouble with staying connected to my wireless network... When it is connected, there is an exclamation point next to the wireless icon.
I have Broadband internet, Belkin N Wireless router, and an Acer Aspire 5741 with the wireless device built into the laptop. This normally runs fine with Windows 7, but it doesn't automatically connect with Ubuntu 10.04...

The icons in the notification area became out of order when I switched displays (laptop / external display). I was able to rearrange all of them by right-click > Unlock from panel > Move except for the wireless icon which doesn't have a "Lock to panel" option when I right click it. Is there a way to move it back to the left of the date?

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10 and the icon that lets me view and choose wireless networks to connect to has mysteriously disappeared. I did the whole "Add to Panel" thing and added the "Network Connections" icon to my task bar, but for all the searching through that and other things like System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications, I just can't find a solution! The Network Preferences still has the list of all the wireless networks I have connected to in the past. It still connects to my home network automatically (although I did have to delete another neighboring network from the Network Preferences list so it only has one auto connection to connect to). So where in the world did my icon go? It was so great. Left click to see all local wireless networks and to connect. Right click to turn off networking or wireless.
