View 6 Replies View RelatedI went to rearrange the icons on my top gnome-panel today, as some of the notification icons are displayed to the right of the power menu, and whenever I right click on any gnome panel, I get two options only 'Help' and 'About Panels' the menu options for edit, move, remove etc. are gone.
I don't really know where to start with this, as I don�t think I have tried to edit the panel since a clean install, so don't know when it was last OK.
Is there a way to edit the themes in Ubuntu with more control then with the Customize feature? Customize lets you change the all the icons and folder icons to a particular set of icons but does not allow you to individually specify what icons to use for folders and file icons and what icons to use for the icons on the top launch panel that are on the right side of the panel by default like the Bluetooth Icon, UPS Battery status icon temperature and current condition icon in the calendar. Older versions of Ubuntu gave the user more control over how the launch panel looked, I thought I remembered an option to use 3-D icons on the launch panel in older versions of Ubuntu.

Alacarte opens and seems to be working properly however it will not write any changes to the "applications" panel. if I un-check, edit or remove any listing under Alacarte it is still in the applications panels. I ran it in a terminal window under both home user and root, not errors, and sitll will not save changes or revert.
I don't know if anyone else has experianced this. This may have started after the installation of wine, but not ceartian about that, that is just when I first noticed the issue.

I need to take video from an NTSC DVD (which I made from 8mm analog tape), edit it, create a menu, and burn it. It doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to work. The total project is a little over 1 hour of video. I have reasonable computer power for this.
That doesn't seem like such a difficult task, but it actually requires using up to four different mutually incompatible programs, each of which has nearly infinite options, a huge number of intermediate file types, and infinite ways to fail. If there are intermediate files to be written, I need to know EXACTLY what files and formats to use, and what packages must be installed to use those formats. I don't care if the programs are KDE or Gnome (even a command line might work if the procedure is clear-cut).
The task consists of four parts:
* Rip or import an ordinary video from DVD. (This was made by a hardware DVD recorder).
* Edit videos. Create clips, cut, past, move, fade.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having some issues getting my two monitors (both 1600x900) to work well with Xinerama. The first thing I'm having trouble with is getting 1 wallpaper to span across both monitors..from what I've googled it's sounds like I'm not the first either The 'span' function in the change wallpaper window doesn't do it. The second thing is that I would like the panels to stretch across both monitors well, or at least be able to create another panel on the 2nd monitor which I can't do now.Here's my xorg.conf file:

I deleted my main panel at the top of the screen. I created another but I am having trouble getting a few tools back on it. Mainly the 'Places', 'Administration', and 'Settings' options (I think that I worded them correctly). I of course went into 'Add to panel' but I can't seem to find those tools.

I think I could tolerate the new gnome shell if I could turn some of my tcl/tk and python gui scripts into things that I can store in the 'favorites' panel. In F14 I could create 'applets' ( with an Icon) that I could put in the top panel ( menu bar). Clicking on the icon would start the (gui based) script. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.
So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior
