Ubuntu :: Package Managers Crash ?

Jul 14, 2011

All my package managers are crashing. I will try to start them up, they will begin loading, and then will crash. The problem began with the Update Manager putting up the red circle error icon that says: "An error has occured, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount > 0'. This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies."

The recommended fix for this looks to be on this post that I got from LaunchPad: [url]

It says to: "Open the Synaptic package manager. System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager

If anything is broken it will tell you.Choose 'Custom' from the buttons at the bottom then click on 'Broken'

Right click on the offending package and choose to remove it."

Unfortunately, Synaptic won't open.

Ubuntu :: Any Simpler Package Managers In Kubuntu?

I have been using kubuntu 10.04 for a while now and its working great. The main problem is that as far as I know it lacks a simplified package manager like ubuntu software center. Kpackagekit is fine as a synaptic replacement but searching for programs among all sorts of unrelated packages is very tiring. Are there any other options?

General :: Bash Function/alias For Package Managers?

Jul 6, 2010

I have packer installed for AUR packages, but I want to be able to use the pacman command for both. I think I will need a function for this -- what I mean is that whenever I use pacman, it will try using packer and if that fails (invalid option) it will use pacman-color. It could also decide which program to use based on the arguments. I can't just use packer (alias pacman='sudo packer') because packer doesn't have some options like -R to remove packages. I want to always use it to install and upgrade packages however, because It can install from the default repositories as well as AUR.

Does someone know how to accomplish this, or could point me in the right direction? I'm new to bash scripting. error (e.g. pacman -V prints packer: Option '-V' is not valid.).

General :: Package Managers Upgrade Packages Like Glibc?

Jul 16, 2011

I've been looking further into Linux from Scratch, and I am particularly interested in the package management side of the system. I understand that this is not covered in the book, but if I were to attempt LFS, package management would be a major convenience. From what I have read, when upgrading packages like glibc, you have to recompile everything to reflect the change.

If that is true, how do package managers like pacman and apt get around this issue? Isn't lacking glibc for even the time it takes to replace the files catastrophic to the system?

Is there an easier way (without using a package manager) to upgrade programs? For example, I just want to upgrade Amarok. In order to do this, I've had to upgrade every one of it's dependencies because they've all had minor upgrades from the versions I already have installed.

Is there an easier way to compile programs and their dependencies manually or are package managers the only way?

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manager Crash Update-apt-xapian?

Apr 27, 2011

I upgraded an older system from jaunty 9.04 to karmic 9.10/ Following the upgrade, and about six hours of stable use, I ran the synaptic package manager, to pull in fvwm-crystal and a couple of other nits. Synaptic went into its usual tiring Rebuild Index while the resource hog update-apt-xapian ran away gleefully with the cpu pegged. for longer than I've ever seen it... about 15 minutes, and then the system crashed. and, I mean it crashed hard. I have not seen linux do this in years. Not just a seg fault, the whole machine just crashed (cpu, display, keyboard, the works). Restart and no problem, until I ran Synaptic (Rebuild Index. several minutes, crash).I played this game for a while; thinking the system might just might be overheating... let it cool down, and retried.same result. I tried running one last time, and this time pressed the reload (on Synaptic main panel) prior to the crash.it pulled in the repository updates and completed the Rebuild Index. (no crash)

I have run Synaptic several times since that. downloaded some goodies, and have had no further crashes (although, it does run Rebuild Index every time I start it.and update-apt-xapian pegs the cpu while this is going on. The question(s) I have are:

1) I was not aware that an apt these days can bring down the kernel (no panic, no logging, just down....) How is update-apt-xapian tied into the kernel that permits this vulnerability?

2) There appears (from searches) to be a problem with Synaptic or at least with xapian...?? What is going on with this resource pig..?

3) If I disable xapian and use sudo apt-get instead, instead of Synaptic, does this solve this resource problem?

4) Is there another forum area where this might be addressed besides general?

OpenSUSE :: Repopulate Package Information After System Crash And Restarting From Gnome

Feb 16, 2010

I have upgraded my laptop to OpenSuse 11.2 few weeks ago. It was fine until last Tuesday, when a system crash occurred during a kernel security update. I think something went wrong with my network connection. I was working on my code and suddenly I lost my base tools such as /bin/ls and /bin/cd. So I tried to restart and got a kernel panic as my kernel was partially broken.

I tried rescue the system, however it did not work. After that I thought I could fix it by reinstalling the OS with minimal server configuration over my existing root partition. (Since I didnt have any other computer or live cd at that time and I was rushing for a demo, I could not reinstall the missing components one by one. And reinstalling the minimal server made sense then )Almost everything went fine ( i needed to do little things like creating gdm user). Now I can use my system and all my applications. But as expected, the pre installed packages in my system now cannot be seen by YaST Software Manager. Is there a way to repopulate the package list?

Another question is, I cannot restart the computer from a Gnome session. Whenever I restart or shutdown, i go back to the login screen, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 which starts the restart progress. How can I fix this?

Debian :: PACKAGE MANAGER Crash - Stuck - Dead - How To Reset Or Clear Repositories

May 15, 2011

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.

What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.

The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.

I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)

Fedora :: Anaconda Failure / "A Crash In The Anaconda-12.46-2.fc12 Package Has Been Detected"?

Sep 29, 2010

I have F12 and been using the livecd-creator command since F9 to create liveUSB devices which are used to install Fedora on all the systems (nearly 100) I support at different sites ensuring they have the same build/configuration. About a week ago, I created a new image and when I attempt to install to hard drive, there is an ABRT message displayed;

"A crash in the anaconda-12.46-2.fc12 package has been detected"

Also see attached file. Now I am not able to install to hard drive.

It appears this is a known bug which has been reported at url.and that there is not fix planned. Can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case, does it mean that the Install to Hard Drive feature will no longer be available?

Ubuntu Networking :: What Are The Various Network Managers

May 27, 2009

What are the various network managers that can be present on Ubuntu? I have been having problems with network connections on my laptop, and it seems that I have more than one manager that is conflicting with the other. I can make settings for both wired and wireless connections using nm-connection-manager, yet using the applet NetworkManager to make a connection ends up with different settings.

i.e. I had set a fixed IP address with nm-connection-manager, yet NetworkManager made a connection that had a different address. When I went back to NetworkManager, the settings had been changed to make an automatic connection with DHCP. I did have wicd installed at one point, but deleted it with synaptic using the "complete removal" setting.I want to be able to go to one location to setup the connections, and have those settings remain.

Ubuntu :: Download Managers Can't Resume Downloads - Errors?

Apr 9, 2011

I have tried so many download managers it ain't funny, but there's one thing they all don't seem to know how to do well, and that's resume problematic downloads. I have used both fast and slow Internet connections on 3 continents (currently I'm on a slow and intermittent one as I live in Burma) so speed doesn't seem to be what causes the problem. And I download from many, many different sites, so it's not site specific either. The problem is as follows. I'm downloading a file from a server that supports resuming downloads but something goes wrong with the download and the download manager reports an error, like "size mismatch", or "timeout error".

What I really, really want to know, is why can't these managers resume downloads that experience these errors? Why can't they set markers during the download process (say every 5MB) so that if a problem like a size mismatch, a connection dropout, or a timeout occurs, then it can backtrack only slightly and then resume? I download a couple of shows from revision3 each week and more often than I care to remember they've failed at around 70% of a 300MB+ download and merrily just start downloading all over again. Another frustrating thing is they ditch the file that didn't finish, so I can't even watch the part of the show I had. I live with it, though it's very frustrating, but I wonder why these download managers aren't more intelligent.

If I install a new desktop manager without uninstalling the old one, how do I specify which one to use? I wanted to look at LXDE, so to see what would happen, I installed it without uninstalling KDE. KDE apparently just sat underneath, and was unaffected. I didn't keep LXDE, but I might, if I could switch back to KDE to do work until I understood LXDE. (Keeping up-to-date in MEPIS will force me to learn KDE 4 despite that KDE 3 was fine, so I might as well examine other desktop managers.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Fetching From Servers Fail When Using Update Managers

Jan 11, 2010

I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:

Code:
Failed to fetch [URL]
Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.

Code:
Failed to fetch [URL] Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
And of course Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package

I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup. Take note though, that I am able to install other software normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer.

It's just these updates and Java:
Code:
jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade

Ubuntu :: Finding Media Managers, Like Ember + Tvrename For Windows

Apr 30, 2010

At this point, the only programs I still use my Windows partition for are the various automated media managing apps like Ember media manager, Tvrename and Therenamer.

For those not familiar with the above programs, what they do is take your ripped/recorded TV and movie files, rename them according to an xbmc-friendly naming protocol, organize them in terms of directory structure, and even download screen shots and metadata for them.

Are there any good alternatives for Ubuntu? If not, would running those windows programs on a virtual machine or with Wine work? Which would be easiest/most stable?
