When I have several documents open in OpenOffice.org and save one of them to my Pen/Flash drive, and then try to unmount, it won't let me. It says an OpenOffice document is using the drive. Here is the problem: The document refers to isn't the one I just saved to the Pendrive. It's a document saved on my Hard Drive! I close it (which should not be necessary) and try unmounting again. Now it tells me to close the document saved on the Pendrive.
I don't understand why I need to close ALL Openoffice documents to unmount the drive. Not sure if this is a bug in OpenOffice or in Ubuntu. Either way it's annoying and is a complete waste of time to be messing around with closing and opening documents every time I want to unmount an external drive.I have tested this on various computers all running Ubuntu 9.10, with both Gnome and LXDE. Same results. Ubuntu, I hate you!
What happens on my computer is this: when I insert my Walletex business card-shaped pendrive into any USB port, everything works fine, and so does unmounting using the right-click "Eject" option.However, when I try to unmount the device using the other context menu option, "Remove device safely" (or something like that; sorry, I'm using a localized version of GNOME), it does unmount it, but then mounts it right back on. The weird thing is that after it does it, if you try using that same unmount option again ("Remove safely"), it actually works! And I can replicate this issue every time: the "Eject" context menu option works the first time every time I try it, but the "Remove safely" one, when used for the first time per device insertion causes an unmount and then a re-mount, and works the second time you try it
So here is my situation..i was using win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 in my dell studio 1555. and i wanted to try out debian so i installed debian in my pendrive. so the grub was modified. when the computer starts it shows debian,ubuntu and win7 no problem.. but if i remove the pendrive, nothing comes up. it shows grub rescue>..
so now i cant start up unless i plug in the pendrive. what to do now to solve this problem?? i want to restore my grub to the previos state.

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.
I have gone senile but what happened to the Unmount option when I right click on a Desktop CD icon in 10.04? I only wanted to make an ISO image and K3B says it cannot unmount the CD. I don't want to Eject it. I have a clever idea! I will add Mount Manager to the panel. Mount Manager should be called Eject Manager because that is all it does!! Even Krusader seems to have lost its ability to unmount a device.
I am in the middle of copying a dvd with k9copy and it is asking me to insert a recordable dvd.so i try to eject and it won't let me, it says failed to eject media one or more volumes are in use. There is nothing else using the disc so I don't get it?

I'm running both Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows XP Home Edition. I have my hard drive partitioned with 90 GB for Windows and 60 GB for Ubuntu. Here's the problem: When I booted up Ubuntu for the first time, the Windows file system appeared as a second HDD. My dad told me that I need to make it so that drive doesn't appear or be read only or else he will be uninstalling Ubuntu because of the risk that some program will write to the Windows file system. I personally am not worried about that happening, but he clearly is. Remember, I'm brand new to Linux so please make things simple for me to under stand!
I've recently purchased a 4gb "ultra speed" flash drive. It reads and writes just fine on both my laptop and desktop. Both of which are running Ubuntu 9.04. However, when I go to unmount the drive from my desktop system, the drive icon on the desktop disappears, but it remains in the "media - File Browser".
There is one change in the file browser though. When I unmount the drive, the "eject" symbol disappears from next to the drive in the "media - File Browser" but the drive icon itself remains. The light never extinguishes on the USB drive, and when I click on the icon that remains in the File Browser, the USB drive mounts itself again and reappears on my desktop and the eject symbol reappears in the File Browser.This drive unmounts just fine from my laptop.

Actually when I started format under ' FAT32 All Systems '.. it started and after some time it showed an error and close.. it pendrive unmouted automatically .. I tried with another USB port .. It didn't show up on desktop but there in my computer.. but its not opening there.. When I right clicked on it.. it not showing any options that a pendive icon usually shows like format..

I am unable to mount partition in ubuntu 10.04. Icons for different partitions are not coming within "Places". Every time I have to manually mount the partition or CD or DVD and manually unmount it. Seldom it shows the partition icons within Places>Computer. Then the partitions are getting mounted upon double clicking its partition-icon. I have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime,nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help
I have a 160GB drive installed as /dev/sdb. If I replace it with a 500GB drive, do I have to unmount/mount or will it work as is? This is on Ubuntu Server.

When running linux (Lubuntu 10.04) my windows partition mounts automatically and can be opened and edited in file manager. Is there any way I can prevent it mounting when linux launches, prevent it from being mounted in linux, and (ideally) prevent it from being displayed/opened/edited at all from linux?(In case it's relevant:

How do you unmount for safe removal external drives (such as USB sticks) in Lubuntu? In Nautilus (Ubuntu) under the File menu there are options Eject and Safely Remove Drive; but in Lubuntu I can't find anything like that.
I have an ipod shuffle that will only charge if I eject it. This is easy to do with Ubuntu as I only have to right click on the ipod icon and select "eject." If I select unmount instead, the ipod does not charge. I am now trying out kde 4.6 with Kubuntu, but cannot see a way to eject. There is an option to safely remove the ipod, but this does not correspond to the eject option in Ubuntu as the ipod does not subsequently charge.
