Ubuntu :: Open Terminals At Startup?

Sep 12, 2010

I have Lucid Lynx (10.04) installed, and have this annoyance with various terminals and the Help Menu automatically opening at startup. So every time i boot up i get a screen full of open terminals:

1. Ubuntu Help Centre
2. File Browser
3. Desktop Terminal

I have tried looking at the Startup menu under Preferences but there is no entry for any of the above.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Gnome Terminals Open At 80X23

Jul 8, 2011

In 10.10 I could open a terminal and it would open to the ordinary size 80x24. After upgrading to Natty, all my terminals open at 80x23 instead. Someone told me that it was due to the font size being large, but I don't want to use the obvious fix and decrease the font size. (I'm using the GNOME desktop, I hated Unity.)

What I'm looking for is a command line option for opening an application in a minimized state. Is this possible? Or should I start looking into a script to find the window and minimize it?

Using 10.04 on my laptop, but I can't access the virtual terminals (ctrl+alt+f1-f6). Instead I get a weird screen with apparently randomly generated lines, as they change each time I attempt to access them. (Sometimes it is just a solid color.) They also appear on shutdown/ switching user. I'm using a VIA VX800 chipset.

Ubuntu :: Switching Between Terminals Without Using Combination Keys?

Apr 14, 2010

This is it. Alt + Ctrl + F key won't work for me! I run kubuntu 9.10 on vmWare and what I want to do is to switch between virtual terminals. I tried Alt + Ctrl + F key combination and it only work once!, Say for example, I'm working in GUI on terminal 7(tty7) and I press Alt + Ctrl + F1 to go to tty1. It takes me to tty1 and I can login, then I come back to GUI using Alt + Ctrl + F7, but after that Alt + Ctrl + F1 doesn't take me back to tty1, no matter how much I try. What I can do is to press Alt + Ctrl + F2 and goto tty2 and without logging in, press Alt + Ctrl + F1 to goto tty1. And again, this won't work for a second time! This keeps happening to all the other terminals. Is there a command to switch between terminals?

Ubuntu :: Login Prompt - Virtual Terminals Not Working?

Feb 6, 2010

Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.

Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.6
init: bootchart main process (462) terminated with status 2
init: bootchart post-stop process (474) terminated with status 127
/dev/sda2: clean, (integer)/(integer) files, (integer)/(integer) blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (870) terminated with status 4

What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.

This should be somewhere in the interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
