I can't start U1 anymore neither from System nor from myname menu.I don't see anymore the U1 checkbox neither in my directories nor when I right click.I use nighlies repository and I suspect that everything happend after the last update (three o four days ago).I tried to reinstall from synaptics but no way.Macicada does not start as well.
View 1 RepliesI've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.
I have this major problem with the latest version of Ubuntu (10.10). Since I applied this automatic update Ubuntu won't startup anymore.I am 99% sure it's something to do with the graphics drivers. I have an ATI Radeon HD5850. I can still boot up in safe mode in one of the older kernels of Ubuntu. But with the latest kernel I can't even get into safe mode.What I want to do now, is to remove all traces of any potential drivers and then reinstall them. What is the best way to do this?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04LTS and receive regular software updates. Being a silver-surfer I frequent an old fogies site called "Beyond the realms of AOL - forumotion.net" where we share memories and the like. The site (message board) has a rolling menu which up until recently worked on my computer ... now it doesn't! When I log-in, the rolling menu pops up for a second and then disappears. I get the feeling that one of the regular upgrades has removed a plugin or something from my system. I have Adobe Flash 10 (latest version) installed ... perhaps I'm missing something!It has to be my system because the rolling menu works perfectly well using Windows XP.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Ubuntu on a USB HDD on my Macbok Pro 5.3. Everything seemed to be fine, but while rebooting the computer, OSX doesn't start anymore. So, I would say I erased the boot sector of the internal HDD or something similar but I'm not an expert. My internal HDD seems to be fine: One 200 MB FAT32 partiton partition labeled EFI and with the boot flag, One HFS+ partition for the system. I tried to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD and run the Disk Utility to make a "repair". The repair was fine, but the Mac still doesn't boot anymore. (Forget Ubuntu, it's only OSX related, I'll try again Ubuntu only when I'll be able to boot OSX again).

After upgrading my husband's laptop to 11.04, KDE does not start automatically anymore. kdm (the log-in screen) appears. I select "KDE Plasma Desktop". But instead a kind of terminal appears in the top left corner. This console does not have window decoration. When I type startkde into it, KDE starts completely normally.
The same happens with a newly created user, so a misconfiguration in .kde cannot be the cause.

GNOME was installed on the same computer, too, and caused some problems after the upgrade (instead of KDE being the default session, it was Unity, but no menus or control bars loaded). After trying all the things mentioned above, I uninstalled all GNOME/Unity-related packages to rule out they were causing the problem (according to that list: [url]). It did not help, even though for two packages messages appeared that sounded like they might make a difference:

I've just noticed my Dolphin compress service menu doesn't compress anything except for '*.zip'. It used to compress '*.tar.gz' and '*tar.bz2' but now none of these work, and the bz2 option is gone altogether.Does anyone know what might have happened?I have openSUSE 11.3 & KDE 4.6, but this happened before I upgraded to KDE4.6 just a few days ago, so it's not KDE4.6 related, maybe 4.5? maybe Dolphin?I also tried to install the extract/compress plugin but it says "Could not find program 'compress_TARBZ2.sh'" which all are in my /bin folder. since about a week I got a serious Problem on my Multimedia Homeserver. It firstly happened after doing normal updates with 'zypper dup'. Starting the Machine xdm starts up normally, but after logging in KDE (4.6.0, OpenSUSE 11.4 64Bit) shows its progress bar and finally ends up hanging at about 80% completion. Repos are the original distro repos (except nvidia, packman and VLC Repos) for stability reasons - this means no KDE-factory or Tumbleweed repo is activated here. Icewm starts fine so I can use Xine but I'd like to get KDE back running again for using amarok and others.Here is what I tried so far:

It extracted and asked me for a installation location, to which i put [~]
It then finished the installation.
But when i click on the icon in the start menu or on desktop it fails to start, when i also click on a .pdf document it also fails to start!
Just did a fresh install of 10.04, everything working great, and I was pretty excited about the integration with gwibber, evolution, and empathy. I was fiddling around, getting things the way I wanted them (startup programs and such), and upon a test restart, noticed that unlike the first couple of times I had restarted with 10.04, the Evolution icon no longer came up in the tray, and my "Me" menu was useless - didn't have me signed in to Gwibber or Empathy, didn't give the option to do so.
Yes, I can still run these programs no problem, and I could probably get it such that they ran at the start... but what I would like is for them to run minimized, in the tray, like they did the first time I booted up 10.04. Again, I trust this is a mere couple of lines in the command prompt, I just don't know what they are.
I have been using F13 Gnome desktop for a few mouths now but for some reason it won't start X anymore. I get this:

while I was using a live cd, I accidentally deleted some files on the hard drive, including apparently the init file. The fact is that linux doesn't start anymore (kernel panic).

A few days ago, after I made some changes on my lucid system, hibernation is not possible any more, that is, if I choose hibernation, everything seems to go fine but at the next boot, the image is not read by the kernel and normal boot happens. I was running 10.04 on my Asus EEE PC. Today I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, but with lots of regrets. The complete desktop changed. I don't even know how to access the system settings anymore. I just wanted to start up the Twonky Media server from my personal folder again, which resides in my personal user folder, but I cannot find the folder at all! Shame on the Ubuntu team to throw around the user experience so much. The Ubuntu Linux distribution has gone back to a nerdy level, I hoped it had recovered from that. Make-the-user-feel-at-home! Is that so difficult?
Where is my Favorite group, where is my System group, where is my personal Home user folder? I'm sure I can find them on my own, but it's a shame that my user experience has been taken into a rolercoaster. Why make it so difficult on the user Ubuntu, why?
Since one of the recent updates, I cannot close the System Monitor anymore. Opening it, no problem. All processes are listed just fine and I can force close anything that gives me trouble but... When I want to close System Monitor again, nothing. Qtrl + Q, the X close button at the top right, Alt + F4... all do nothing. And although each time I see some disk activity, there is nothing in the logs.
Another thing I notice is that both dbus-daemon and gnome-system-monitor use about 40% CPU time each, taking the system to 100% CPU usage all the time.Luckily, I have System Monitor open so I can select the process gnome-system-monitor from the list and hit Terminate Process. I did not find anything about it in these forums. Anyone noticed this too or am I the only one?
After a kernel update action, it seems that I'm unable to boot a system anymore. First off, after installing the kernel, and trying to shutdown to boot to the new kernel, the system replied with INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel. Kernel update was performed from to the following versions 2.6.18-128.el5.img -> 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img . The system is a VMWare virtual machine. When trying to reboot, the system passes GRUB, starts initializing and after loading the dm it stops for a few seconds at the message Waiting for new devices, show the following message:

My system doesn't boot anymore, when I turn on the laptop, instead of the normal grub screen, i get the following:

I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

I recently switched from fedora 14 to 15. Today my computer suddenly shut down during an update, as I thought it overheated I decided to clean the cooling system and reapply thermal paste. However, now the system won't boot anymore ("kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown-block").
I would like to either solve this booting problem, or mount the fedora 15 filesystem and recover some files. Whichever is easier.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?
