I just upgraded to Natty, and while U1 is working, it no longer changes the files & folders emblems according to the status of the item (not synchronized, doing synch, synchronized). I'm searching for hours and found nothing on that.
View 1 RepliesI wanted to add some custom emblems so I could label my folders more effectively and after a little bit of work, I figured out how to do it and I thought I should share that info with the group. The first thing to note is that the emblems are stored in the folder /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/emblems. The first problem you are going to run into is that you don't have permission to add files to this folder. The way I got around this was by changing the owner of the folder to myself. I am using a computer for recording, so my user name is "band." Change that to your user name.
Code: sudo chown band "/usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/emblems" After you do that, you can paste your icons (I would use the .png format) into the folder. Next, you have to resize your icons so they are 32x32. You can do this by right clicking on the image then Open With > Gimp Image Editor. When Gimp starts up, go to Image > Scale Image. Change the width to 32. If your image is square, it will automaticly change the hight to 32. If it isn't then you can either force it to be 32 by unchecking the chain icon between the width and height, or you can resize the layer so it fits within 32x32. Then File > Save. If it is not a .png file, I would use Save As and save it as a .png by replacing the current format (.jpg, ect.) to .png. The Gimp will automaticly change the settings so it save it to the right format. I know for some of you these steps were obvious, but I thought I should help people out who aren't too familiar with the terminal or with the Gimp.
In my orig. post I did not state that I was now using gnome in Ubuntu 10.10.I have "light sensitive eyes" and I have to be able to change the back ground colors from white to dark in such programs as Nautilus and editors. This is the main reason I've used KDE for years, it's very easy to change in KDE. View 6 Replies View RelatedWell I was curious to try Nautilus Elementary from its PPA. The install was fine, but the search function was broken. After having issues removing the PPA and my package manager having errors I have old Nautilus back, but without its old Backgrounds and Emblems in the Edit menu. I tried doing remove completely of Nautilus and its related packages but I don't have the old nautilus back as I need it.
I don't want to have to reinstall everything just for one application, as it means configuring settings and installing the rest of my apps all over again.
I've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.
my folder emblems just stay grey. I don't know what it is I did that caused it but when I try to change the theme the folder emblems just stay the same (grey and simple) but it looks different on my panel.

I've been an ubuntu user for a while, and just started trying out fc15. In nautilus, there used to be an "emblems" side panel, as well as an emblems tab in the file properties window. (emblems being the little overlays you could assign to files or folders, like a tick or a cross or a smiley fdace or whatever). Is there some package I need to install to get this functionality back? Has it never been present in fedora, or is it a change in gnome3 / fc15?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently in the process of moving around 20TB of data from one server to another. Security is not a concern, since the data are freely available to anyone on our network anyway. There are a couple of things that I'm trying to decide on:
(1) protocol choice
Of all the choices I have--nfs, ftp, scp, rsync, samba--has anyone done any benchmarking to show which would be the fastest/most robust transfer protocol? I know nfs has slow write speeds for synchronous transfers. Asynchronous would be faster, but less robust. I'm leaning toward rsync since it performs md5sums to confirm the file transfers. (Remember if there's a 1 in a billion chance that a byte will get corrupted, then I'll have 20,000 corrupt bytes in the transfer.)
(2) Nautilus emblems
We use emblems in Nautilus to categorize files. The old and the new server have the same directory structure.Is there any way to copy the Nautilus emblems from the old server to the new server. What I want is that if a user had marked a particular file with a star on the old server, then that file would be marked with a star on the new server when he/she logs in.
I have recently installed Faenza icon theme and just began to notice the inconsistency of icon emblems being displayed by compiz.Attached image shows the emblems of Chromium, Nautilus and Comix are that of the default icons, while Empathy andCompizConfigSettingsManager displayed the custom icon correctly. The dock displays all apps' icons correctly though.The issue does not occur exclusively to Application Switcher (Alt+Tab), it also occurs with Scale (Super+W), Shift Switcher (Super+Tab).

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy story thus far:I have a working, fairly customized desktop environment running Ubuntu Studio 10.10.Yesterday, I literally wasted the entire day attempting to upgrade to, and then reverting from, Ubuntu Studio 11.04 (never forget to do a grub-install when restoring your system to a previous state from backups).I am not bashing 11.04! That is not the purpose of this thread,although I believe that Unity needs some maturity,and because of this I probably won't upgrade until the next LTS.
What I would like to know is this: Is there a way that I can get the various and sundry upgrade managers to stop telling me about the 11.04 upgrade availability? I'd really like to not see it�I feel somewhat like a Luddite every time I do.
I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.
How did it work out? What model machine are you using?

I keep having to downgrade because ubuntu tried to upgrade to php5.3 everytime I try to upgrade something.
For instance, I just upgraded wine and didnt notice php5.3 in there as a dependancy, so now have to downgrade AGAIN!
Is there a way to upgrade wine without upgrading php as well?

I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.
Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI decided to give Ubuntu another try and installed the Studio version. During my installation it asked whether I wanted the Realtime kernel or not. I chose yes as I figured it could come in handy when I work with audio.However since this version isn't exactly Ubuntu 10.10 as promoted , I decided to install Ubuntu Desktop on top of it (trough apt-get). For the full experience. ( im not even sure if it just installed extra software and added some folders)Now my questions are:1:The Realtime kernel is it now overwritten by any other kernel that came with the Desktop installation?
2: How will the updates handle my installation once i want to upgrade to, lets say, 11.04.I'm not really sure about how the system will look at things to upgrade. Will it look at my Desktop installation or my Ubuntu Studio? ( concerning the Realtime kernel as well).Just to add some more: I'm a total Linux Noob(although im not scared to use the Terminal)

This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later. I tried again several times in different days and it is the same. I have 10.4 recently updated from my original installation of 9.10. I think it was not a pre-release, I did it automatically from the website and it took a long time. As far as I know, all I have installed is official, except perhaps Skype itself.
