Ubuntu :: Not Able To Login , Start Gdm / Enable This?
Feb 5, 2010
New user, just installed last evening. Ran fine, then did update. rebooted computer, see logo, but login screen is dark black rectangle, can see anything.
Trying to power down computer yields message that gdm-simple-greeter.desktop is not responding.
Tried do CTRL-ALT F2 (found in forum)
and issue commands
sudo /etc/init.d/dgm stop
dpkg-reconfigure gdm - but get error message "/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure must be run as root"
So, I can run command line, but no gdm.
Any ideas? And I am a neophite with Linux.

Meaning when I turn on the computer, it automatically logs into the family account; and they never need to enter any passwords.Second, under System -> Administration -> Users and Groups (users-admin from terminal) there is a "Don't ask for password on login" option (toggle) which is desirable for this family account. However, I have never seen this option enabled, but always grayed out. Is there any way to enable this option? In short, I want:1) For the family account never to require a password on login.2) Automatically log into the family account on boot.

I can't get Ubuntu v10.10 to start on VirtualBox running under Windows XP. The installation wen smoothly. However when I try to start the machine what I see is a mere black screen... The boot order is fine. However it seems strange that no data is read from the virtual hard drive (which is about 2.15 GB):
What should I do ?

Decided to give Unity desktop a try this afternoon on my Maverick desktop - bad mistake. Found it very slow so I removed it. After that I restarted and all I get after logging in is a white screen.
I don't get an option at login to use KDE or anything else for that matter, so I'm hoping someone can give me some idea how I can rectify this.
Really don't want to wipe the install and start over because I don't have a separate home partition (think I've learned my lesson on that front) and there's a lot of stuff I need to keep on this machine.

I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

To enable automatic login, I edited the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file and entereted the following lines:
Code:
The automatic login is working but I still see the login box with options to select language. After a delay of few seconds, the system will automatically log me in. I don't know why I see the login window. Is there any way to bypass this window?

We use Centos 5.3 which we deploy to dozens of boxes in different buildings throughout our shop. I set up KDE to be the default windows manager for these boxes, although the individual users can choose for themselves. We use LDAP authentication, and typically logging in through the LDAP into KDE goes without a hitch. However, a couple users are having problems logging in to their accounts through KDE, my boss and my boss's boss to be specific. We have NFS shares which serve up each users home directory regardless of where they connect in our system. When my boss, or his boss, try to log in, they put in their credentials, and LDAP accepts them, but KDE never starts. The splash screen which displays that it's "initializing system services" or "loading desktop" doesn't even come up, it just has a picture of the desktop with a cursor, and hangs there. I've tried deleting the .kde directories in their home folders, but that doesn't work. Those two are the only accounts out of our entire system that have problems logging in to KDE, and I have no idea why!
I've looked in the .xsession-errors file, here's a copy code...
I know it isn't the xset or "no profile" errors because all the users I've checked get those too, but they can log in just fine. Both xsession files on both users are almost identical to this one, it just seems that KDE will never start.

One of my colleagues was working on my system (Centos 5.6). He deleted some files from the /tmp directory (he thought he was cleaning up files). Right after that, he rebooted the system. I now can no longer login.
Prior to this, here's what I see following a reboot code...
no matter what I use, I cannot login -- it takes me back to the (none) login: prompt
Any ideas? I know that deleting from the /tmp directory could lead to catastrophic results, but he thinks he only deleted a specific set of files.

Running RHEL 5.4 on a HP server. Ran into a issue today where ldap was working fine then was informed it was failing. During the troubleshooting process, I found out that the ldap service failed to start up. See error below:
/sbin/runuser: /usr/sbin/slaptest: Permission denied
I checked the permissions of the ldap.conf and slapd.conf files and they appeared to be correct. Any ideas why ldap will not start up?

Does anyone know a way to activate a screensaver at the login screen? I've got about 5 machines here, and I'd really like the ability to just have the screensaver come on after 5 minutes of sitting there with nobody logged in...
Even a way to blank the screen would be nice. However, if we were to blank the screen, I need to ensure that it doesn't do a DPMS blanking, since we use calibrated monitors here, and turning them off sucks.

I need sshd (thats the ssh host) to enable, or be allowed to enable audo when I log in. Once I log in to my server locally, sound is enabled as long as a local bash is active. When local bash is active, I can run command line audio operations, in various audio programs via an SSH terminal, and have the sound work at the server.
I want the sound (device(s)?) to be active, enabled, loaded, (NOOB here) when I am ONLY logged in via SSH. I don't want to have to go to the server and log in to a local terminal to have audio loaded, this defeats the point of using SSH.. LOL sound needs to work on that server with no local login, I.e. the screen says "computername login:"
So there is something I'm missing here. Ive read over the sshd documentation many times.. Some of it is beyond my skill set, so I'm sure i'm missing something.
Or perhaps sshd needs permission to load the audio? I don't know here I'm a noob.
(I suppose I should add, this is gnome system with X disabled with the runlevel edit to gdm.conf. but audio works without starting X, so I doubt the problem lies here, as I said before the SSH connection does what I need it to as long as a local BASH (not X) session is logged in.)

After checking "enable desktop effects" in KDE. I'm dropped to login screen and can't login. How can I enable desktop effects? (As a solution to not being able login after checking the box I found that deleting kwinrc in .kde/share/config/ should help and it worked, so this is not a problem).

For some strange reason, my gnome panel does not start up when I log in. I have created a thingy following some instructions that I found in another thread, on which I have to click twice every time I log in in order for the panel to appear. This seems to be related to configuration issue in my user account, because if I create a guest user account, the panel will appear normally. Now if I move my home folder to that account, the panel will not start.
I believe this has to do with the fact that I installed and then uninstalled compiz
