Ubuntu :: No New Updates After Adding Ppa
Dec 30, 2010
While trying to get my wwan to work i somehow messed up. I got a some errors when running apt-get update. I disabled the source causing the errors and I can now update normally. However, it's been over a week and no available updates has been presented by the update manager. This makes me think that something is wrong.
The now disabled source, causing the most recent error was;
Code:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/user/ppa-name/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/user/ppa-name/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
[Code]....

I'm kinda new to Linux. My problem is that a new Fedora O/S entry is added onto grub everytime I receive an update on Fedora (I think). Eg:
Fedora 15 15.40.0-4 ...
Fedora 15 15.40.0-3 ...
Fedora 15 15.38.0-0 ...
Windows 7
How do I stop this? Ideally I'll only have two entries, Fedora 15 and Windows 7 where Windows is set as the default primary o/s to boot up. The current method I use is to fiddle around with that grub file and set default to entry 3, which used to be Windows 7 but is now a Fedora (which means Fedora is now set to default boot up).

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.

I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?

I am trying to install a printer, an Epson Lx-300 II. I go to System>Administration>Printing and select a New printer. No printer is automatically detected, so I select Epson Dot Matrix from the list (as the LX-300 II model is not listed). This is ok, and it prints however it prints weirds letters.

sudo apt-cdrom add
sudo update
/etc/apt/source.list confirms that the CD repo has been added. Tried to "sudo xserver-xorg-video-sis" but got a "E: Unable to locate package."

I'm running Kubuntu 10.4. I cloned an old xp installation into the first primary partition on my disk and I was trying to add it to grub2. I can access the files when I mount it which means that the xp filesystem is working fine. When I do an update-grub though it doesn't detect it. I think that the problem is related to the fact that I cannot find a boot.ini file into the xp installation.

If I cant get it all working, I at least want to get xp and ubuntu back to normal.

I have a GnuPG key that's been signed by several people. I want to add another name (and e-mail) to it.I used seahorse to do it, but it doesn't look like the old signatures migrated to the new name.Is this standard behavior? Is there a way that I can migrate the signatures, or do I have to request that the signers themselves do it?

I use gedit for most of my document editing and reading. But if I need to open a document thats in either the rtf or doc format, I end up having to open up OpenOffice (which takes a while on a netbook). Not to mention I have to use up precious disk space with OO.o installed. So I ask, is there anyway to add support for those two documents types?

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but I need to add a NIC to an existing server running Ubuntu Server edition 8.10. My question is what changes I need to make once the NIC is physically installed? I guess it will not be autoconfigured, so I will have to add it to the /etc/network/interfaces manually, which is ok as I need to set it up with a static interface anyway. Is there a good How-to or set of instructions on how to do this?

i've recently been required to monitor my cpu's temp. for one, i have no idea how to do so, and for another i'd like to do so by continually seeing the temperature displayed on the top menu bar, similarly to how you can setup graphs displaying your cpu use, memory, etc.

When I first decided I wanted to start using Ubuntu, I was using Windows Vista. I created a separate partition by shrinking a portion of my current windows partitions to 60g of free space. I then booting my computer with the Ubuntu live CD and installed it under that 60g of free space. (I dual boot now and have been happy ever since). I guess my question is if I boot back into windows and format the 60g partition, can I shrink more of my windows partition and allocate more of it to the 60g part? I'm only asking this since I would like more space when the newer Ubuntu version comes out. I wasn't sure if by doing this GRUB will get deleted as well and mess up my computer.

I accidentally deleted windows from my computer. A little more extreme than what I meant to do, but the partition was too big, there was a bunch of unused space and I was trying to shrink it.... i have a partition set up to put it back in, does anyone know of a tutorial that shows how to do it? I can't seem to find one, it would surprise me if there wasn't, theres one for everything else.

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and I've got to say that for me (been using Ubuntu since 9.04) that this has to be the best release yet, however one of the main added features doesn't successfully work for me? Unless I'm doing it wrong? So I'll list what I do just incase the problem is me.Firstly I access Gwibber (either from the Me Menu ( i think that's what it's called) and click broadcast account, or access it through the applications menu) then select Facebook from the drop down menu. I then click authorise and take all the steps needed to authorise Gwibber (logging in, accepting etc) and it says Facebook Authorised. I then click Add and it just highlights the box and doesn't actually do anything?
So I would like to know if I am doing something wrong while trying to authorise it and add the account, or if it just isn't working for me at the moment?

Just made the upgrade to 10.04 and after copying my /home/ directory to my external and back over to my hard drive, the .mp3 extensions have all disappeared. Dolphin still identifies the files as mp3 audio files, but without the extension, Amarok, Banshee or VLC will not play them. Is there anyway to get the media players to play those files, or anyway to add the .mp3 extension onto all of those files at once?

I've got two drives, one with Ubuntu 10.4 and one with Win 7. My BIOS boots to the Ubuntu drive, which has Grub2 installed. Apparently though, since I have Win7 on the other drive, Grub doesn't find it and won't generate a boot menu entry for it. I'm attempting to just add one to the menu by editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom, but those attempts aren't quite working. That adds an entry to the menu, but apparently I've got a parameter wrong somewhere.
