Ubuntu :: No Background In IceWM

Apr 2, 2010

I've got no background desktop image in IceWM.I've got Ubuntu 9.10 PowerPC installed. I did a bare-bones installation of Ubuntu, and installed the latest version of IceWM.To make this work properly, I edited /etc/X11/default-display-manager to have no code whatsoever, so I just manually boot up, and type "startx." To point startx to IceWM, I edited /etc/X11/Xsession to just say "exec icewm-session"

IceWM comes up, and does stuff that I need it to, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to configure a desktop background.

General :: File Manager For IceWM Like Dfm?

May 11, 2011

I like the view of dfm but the project seems to be dead (last update in 2001) and it hangs up with my IceWM, so I can't use it at all. Is there anything else like dfm (it should look very oldschool) that I can use with IceMW on the desktop area?

Debian Multimedia :: ICEWM Configuration Changes Have No Effect?

To eliminate confusion about paths, I made sure there is only one preferences file: /usr/share/icewm/preferences

To eliminate confusion about themes, I removed all themes directories

OpenSUSE :: Are KDE Apps Compatible With XFCE Or Icewm

Sep 23, 2010

I gave it 6 months, "Plasma" is still as disappointing as it was on day 1 :-( , even more so on SuSE 11.3, but I love the KDE apps. Any suggestions on a lightweight window manager (XFCE or Icewm) Don't care about effects, I like dark and minimalistic where I can define colours, window size and placement, before I rototill this installation.

Plasma has too many irritating features that I cant turn off, just too much like Windoze

Debian Multimedia :: Minimalistic File Manager For Icewm?

Sep 4, 2010

I installed Debian 5.04 with only "basic system", then xorg and the proprietary nvidia driver, then iceWM. ( I had to give up on KDE and Gnome because KDE was incredibly slow, and both of them had a heavy emphasis on visual decorations while I wanted minimalism. ) It was interesting and fun to get this far - and it all works. Now I need a file manager. This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... e_managers has a chart. This enabled me to rule out the ones that don't have OSI-type licences (GPL or similar), and those which don't offer a "list view" of files. That still leaves 20+ choices. I've looked at some of the project sites but they don't give the information I'm looking for. I could install one after another, but I'm not sure whether apps can be removed without leaving a lot of debris like on Windows, and it may be quicker to ask.

My problem with file managers has been that they default to an "icon view". There's usually an option for a "detail view", but it has to be set over and over again, for every new window. I want one that can be configured to *always* give text-based file lists, without having to repeatedly set this option. (I don't mind command line usually, but having to type filenames and paths all the time gets tedious.)So my criteria are: * GPL or equivalent* Fast* Minimum "eye candy"* Can set it for text lists with details, just once and it "remembers"I've searched here and on Google but haven't found which ones (if any?) fit this description.

Then I want it setup so if UserB signs in they get a screen resolution of 800x600 larger icons and larger mouse cursor icons. How can I customize the display settings per user with IceWM? I did not see where I can set these options in ~/.icewm/preferences.

General :: Wireless Works Fine In LXDE But Not Icewm Or Openbox?

Jan 15, 2011

I have an older laptop (P4 Compaq Presario 2110; 512mb RAM) on which I installed Lubuntu 10.10. I am using a Buffalo wireless G PCMCIA card (Broadcom 43xx chip set) on the LXDE side which works perfectly. Out of curiosity I installed 'icewm' and 'openbox.' My wireless card shows when I check lspci as "UP." Using wicd, I can see networks, but my router will not resolve an IP address. NetworkManager does nothing.

I have tried using both ifconfig and iwconfig commands with no love.

Is this something inherent with lighter WMs and desktops? Is there a means to allow my router assign an IP and why would it be different for a different WM? Should the IP address be assigned to the computer?

General :: How To Automatically Show USB Camera Or Memory Stick Contents In Icewm?

Mar 12, 2011

I normally use a very lightweight Linux setup. No desktop like Gnome or KDE, just Icewm as the windows manager and nothing else that normal users might consider essential. Well, I do need a file manager - I use Thunar.

Recently I've been trying Gnome. Whenever I shove a memory stick into a USB port, or connect my digital camera, it can automatically pop up a file manager showing all the goodies on that device. KDE does this too. I like this. Although quick at the command line, I like not having to go sudo to mount the device and all that.

If I want to stick with a lightweight setup using Icewm+Thunar, is there something non-huge I can install to make external devices fire up a Thunar window, or otherwise make access to the contents brainlessly easy?

Ubuntu :: GDM Background - Cannot Change The Background Image To Any Of Mt .jpg Wallpaper Files And .png Files

Apr 3, 2011

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Opensuse Under Grub2 With Splash Background And Console Background?

Mar 24, 2010

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

Slackware :: IceWM "XIO: Fatal IO Error 11"?

May 18, 2011

I have been searching for what causes these error messages from icewm. The moment I log out of the icewm session I see the following errors:XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":1.0"after 154 requests (154 known processed) with 0 events remaining.icewmbg: Can't open display: :1. X must be running and $DISPLAY set.I see this with 1.3.6 and also 1.3.7. I see the errors in Slackware 12.2, 13.1, and 13.37; and both run level 3 and 4. The errors appear with the proprietary nvidia, s3virge, tdfx, and virtualbox drivers. With 1.3.6 I was seeing concurrent segfault errors in /var/log/messages from icewmtray, but not in 1.3.7.I don't notice any related errors in the Xorg log.I see these errors only with icewm.Browsing the web reveals other people see these error messages too. Some people blame icewmbg and others blame X. I have not noticed anything definitive as to the cause.

Ubuntu :: Boots Only To Background

Jan 19, 2011

A couple weeks ago i installed Ubuntu with Gnome on my Dell inspiron 9400, on a fresh new(empty) hard drive. Went without a hitch and has worked great for a couple weeks. A couple nights ago, i opened the update manager and saw that there were a few recommended updates, i browsed through them, none looked spooky or anything so i installed them all. After rebooting, my computer now does nothing at all. I get to the log in, i type in my password and then after that, all that's there is my background picture. No status bars, no wifi connections. I can right click and get a menu, but there's nothing there of any help, just background settings. i'm trying to figure it out as i go along, finding advice in forums and stuff. but i havent seen this problem anywhere. I installed from a live iso. i'm not sure if i can put it back in and somehow undo whatever happened. I'm at a complete impasse with this.

Ubuntu :: Apt-Get Always Running In Background

Mar 7, 2011

Every day I use the top command to check the processes running on my Kubuntu 10.10 system. Every day I find that apt-get is running under the root account and using 100% of the CPU. It'll run forever if I let it but I use "killall" to stop it. Pressing the "c" key in top shows the command used to start the process and doing that I see that apt-get is being started with "apt-get -qq -y update". The -qq param is for quiet mode and the -y is to answer yes to any questions. The important thing is the update parameter. It seems that some "feature" of Ubuntu is starting apt-get in update mode for me on a daily basis. I installed Kubuntu only 3 days ago and I don't recall turning this "feature" on anywhere. How can I disable this "feature" and prevent the system from auto-starting apt-get.?
