Not quite sure what could be wrong here. The settings are enabled, but none of the compiz functions are working. The were working on Friday. I did some searching but I'm not even sure what the problem is, or how to diagnose it. I'm running 10.10, now.. any help is appreciated. Even if you just tell me what I need to be searching for to find a solution.

I enabled the desktop effects.After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect.That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem).Then it is still there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install and run Compiz fusion with fedora 12. I downloaded all the packages etc using both the gui and terminal according to some guides. When I click the desktop effects button, it says 3d is not enabled, however the guide I followed said to enter glxgears (or something to that effect) and if it came up with 3d gears then 3d was enabled...I am very confused. There was an application I ran after downloading/installing some packages that caused the screen to go white and I had to reboot. I read in another forum this may have something to do with my drivers...gotta check my graphics card specs, will post when I find them.

So, it looks like my hardware support all what it needs for Compiz. What else is going wrong here?
I'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting

doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

When I run tvtime with the desktop effects enabled Xorg, compiz and tvtime use a lot of cpu. It's even worse with tvtime in full screen. This doesn't happen with the desktop effects off or when I use vlc for example. The system is a 3GHz P4 Prescott, 1.7GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500. I'm running 11.3 with the nvidia video driver (173.14.27).

I've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.
I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.
Still new to Ubuntu, and I've installed it on my laptop tonight (Alienware M11x, Ubuntu 11.04). When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

I have a problem with Xorg, I am not sure if the black screen is related, but sometimes when I am just using the computer, with heavy processor and memory, but sometimes not, but the title bars to the programs disappear, my compiz effects quit working, and the cairo dock becomes unusable, so I cannot switch windows, but I can close them using 'File > Close" to access the windows under the ones on top, and to fix it I have to switch over to a terminal "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and log into that to kill Xorg by "sudo top" and killing it with the PID.
And the Blanking Screen, I am just doing usual programming with Bluefish, Eclipse and the terminal, and the screen will just go black, and won't come on if I wiggle the mouse, press a key on the keyboard or turn it off and back on, the status light on the monitor stays green, and doesn't go to orange as if it were unplugged or the computer went idle, so I know that it is still communicating with the monitor, but the way I fix this is I have to manually power down the machine via the power button and turn it back on and it works normally for a while.
I installed fedora 13 in my system. This is the only OS in my system. I couldn't enable RPM fusion. So software cannot be installed (like VLC. etc)

GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.

I followed the following procedure to install compiz (and I want compiz, not just the built in desktop effects) on my computer, all sudo with KDM disabled where necessary:
1. apt-get install nvidia-current
2. nvidia-xconfig
3. apt-get install build-essential libxcomposite-dev libpng12-dev libsm-dev libxrandr-dev libxdamage-dev libxinerama-dev libstartup-notification0-dev libgconf2-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libmetacity-dev librsvg2-dev libdbus-1-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libgnome-desktop-dev libgnome-window-settings-dev gitweb curl autoconf automake automake1.9 libtool intltool libxslt1-dev xsltproc libwnck-dev python-dev python-pyrex <- these were prerequisites mentioned by the guide on compiz.org
4. apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-kde compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra emerald
At this point, everything installed successfully, and nvidia driver was working perfectly.
I verified this: desktop effects worked OOB.
5. compiz --replace &
6. emerald --replace &
At this point, compiz apparently started. Emerald worked perfectly: all of the window decorations worked OOB. I went and ran ccsm, and turned on quite a few settings. It didn't enable ANYTHING. When I reran ccsm, all of the settings were back to default, and enabling any new ones had no effect on window behavior. Strange. I looked on the web and found:[url]
The ubuntu page said that I should not "Enable integration into the desktop environment" if gconf was selected. BUT THE FLAT FILE CONFIGURATION WAS SELECTED BY DEFAULT. Then I went back to the site and it said flat file configuration was recommended!
Maybe I shouldn't have enabled desktop effects first (NOTE THAT I LATER DISABLED IT and things still did not work)?
So. I Installed Ubuntu 9.10 PPC from the LiveCD on my Mac G5. There is 4GB of ram in it. 2 CPU's and A Nvidia FX5200.
Now i want to install compiz fusion. I knew that Nvidia doesn't bring out PPC linux drivers. So what do i need to do to get compiz-fusion working?

I accidentally deleted my compiz fusion Icon from my top panel and now I can't seem to get it back. Before 10.04 I could just run Applications/System tools/ Compiz fusion icon and it would appear in my panel. This doesn't work any more! when I run "fusion-icon --no-start" in terminal I get

How do I get compiz fusion to work and what do I need to install? when I enable desktop effects the system panels disappear. Also I'm looking to install that effects editor that has all the different effects menus.
Okay I think I got the menu loader and Compiz working.. for those who browse to this thread.. the answer is. yum install compiz-fusion fusion-icon the desktop cube was a little tricky to get working.
However if I enable desktop effects fromt he preferences menu the system panels still disappear.

Desktop Drapes (wallpaper changer) also set to load on boot; also doesn't do so, even though checked to do so, and also must be loaded manually from desktop. 3.) Something is hogging CPU cycles something awful; if I have more than a few tabs in Firefox open, it takes forever to scroll or reload, and the entire system just bogs almost to the point of unusability. This same behavior exists offline when using any graphic capability (Shotwell or even just Nautilus file manager, if viewing graphics as thumbnails.
I realize this is kind of all over the place and all-inclusive, but although my experience USING Ubuntu goes on several years, it's been generally so trouble-free that I've not had to dig around under the hood much, and I'm kind of at a loss as to where to begin troubleshooting this mess. Would it be easier to just back-up and nuke/reinstall the OS?
