Ubuntu :: New Cursor Doesn't Fully Function?

Oct 23, 2010

I am currently redoing my setup and have installed a new cursor called Vienna3Ubuntu. I extracted it to the .icons folder, went to preferences and found it, it the cursor options list, right where it should be, but when I applied it, it only works kinda half way, the normal cursor won't change at all, and the other cursors only work in by browser and when I am reszing windows and such. Why won't the cursor work like it should? I am using compiz and I wonder if that has something to do with it. I have already tried restarting, relogging, reinstalling, and fiddling with general options in compiz.

Ubuntu :: Getting Inkscape Ver. 0.48 - Cursor Doesn't Line Up With The Tool On Screen

Aug 30, 2010

I have Inkscape 0.48 running on a windows xp laptop, but I can't find a way of getting it onto my desktop system running Ubuntu 8.04, which I need to run EMC2.

If I use apt-get to download the latest version, it gets 0.46, which has a cursor/tool bug in it.(The cursor doesn't line up with the tool on screen).

Is it possible for me to successfully transfer 0.48 via a memory stick to the desktop, without jeopardizing the Ubuntu system, or is there some other way ?

Ubuntu :: Mouse Cursor Doesn't Display After Login With High Resolution / Fix It?

Aug 12, 2010

Version: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop

Problem:
When I change the resolution higher (e.g. 1920x1080),
mouse cursor disappear, until I open the terminal / Ctrl+Alt+F1 (~F6), or run other applications.
But the main problem is, every time after login, the cursor will disappear
(as I know that, before the login, the resolution is 800x600 60Hz, after login, the resolution will be adjusted according to the setting)
So, anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have searched many related posts before,
some of them told me to upgrade the driver, but it didn't help and become worse (cannot boot up, need to re-install ubuntu)
and some of them told me to modify the xorg file, it didn't help, too. (as xorg.conf doesn't exist and I have tried to create one to do the modification, but didn't help)
Any other solution?

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgrading 10.04 To 10.10 System Doesn't Boot (only Blinking Cursor)

Feb 1, 2011

I tried to upgrade to Maverick (server version) usingsudo do-release-upgradeAll went well, but on the first reboot after the installation the PC hangs with grub prompt:error: the symbol grub_xputs not foundI guess it has something to do with my RAID1 setup:sda1/sdb1..RAID1, bootable (system partition, 20 GB)sdc1 ....swap partition sda2/sdb2/sdc2 ... RAID5 (data partition, 3 TB)I made a bootable (using UNetbootin) USB pen drive with 10.10 desktop on it and booted into this desktop version. Aftermdadm --assemble --scanI could successfully access (and mount) my RAID1 and RAID5 drives. However, the system itself does not boot.

after only having mounted /dev/md0 and browsed in the contents, the boot behavior has changed: now the PC does not end up in the grub prompt "the symbol grub_xputs not found", but instead a blank black screen with a blinking cursor left top is shown. Keyboard: no reaction (I tried Enter, Esc, any keys ... no reaction, just a blinking cursor). Then, I tried:

boot into USB pen drive 10.10 desktop
mdadm --assemble --scan ... result: /dev/md0 is available (the RAID1 of sda1 and sdb1)
mount /dev/md0 /mnt/md0

Ubuntu Installation :: NFTS Configuration Tool Doesn't Function?

Dec 31, 2010

I tried installing NFTS Configuration Tool to auto-mount several partitions at startup, but the Configuration Tool isn't working. I've entered the terminal line to update it, but it still won't even start.

What happens is when I click on NFTS Configuration Tool under System - Administration, I'll get the prompt to enter my Administrative password. I enter it and click Ok, but then it just disappears. If I try running the Tool again, I see a window come up at the bottom of my screen titled 'System Administrative' for about half a second then disappear. If I restart or suspend and try again, I still get the same nagging problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Acer Aspire One - 10.4 Doesn't Boot, But Shows Blinking Cursor?

May 25, 2010

Similar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.

It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.

What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.

Programming :: Win32 Function _fpclass() Doesn't Exist

Apr 6, 2010

I'm porting code from Win32 to Linux, a math science app, the thing is that the app have full dependency of de win32 function _fpclass(). Today I was looking all day that function on Linux but it doesn't exist. I know that there are some functions that can make the job mixing them in a other one like in this link below, more or less. [URL]

Well the app use very high virtual memory, Gigas of it(around 500), use Linux as Calculation Server using a very large swap space. If we can't find some way to fix this trouble, we can change the Linux for some open *nix like Open Solaris, because those have fp_class_l().

General :: Keyboard Function Button That Corresponds To Wireless Doesn't Work

Aug 28, 2011

I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu. It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.

I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.

Ubuntu :: Cut Random Text And When The Cursor Focus Jumps Back To The Location Of The Cursor On The Screen

Jul 1, 2010

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.

This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations. If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

Programming :: Passing Data From Interrupt Handler Function To Tasklet Function?

May 18, 2010

I am doing some Linux kernel programming for my research project. I need to record the timestamp (by using cpuid and rdtsc) when an interrupt handler (top half) is first invoked. Due to the time critical nature of the problem itself, I have to do the timestamping inside the interrupt handler itself (the first operation when the handler is called). However, I understand that tasks that are not so time critical should be deferred to a tasklet function (bottom half) for processing because other interrupts are disabled in a (top-half) interrupt handler. I am currently out of idea on how I can pass the timestamp information that I have obtained in the interrupt handler to the corresponding tasklet function.

On the first reboot, the KDE login screen never loads, and I just get a blank black screen.I then do a hard reset. From there, everything appears to work. For whatever reason, I end up rebooting, and when I log back in to KDE, not only do I not get my custom wallpaper, but I also don't get any desktop icons, a taskbar, etc.Right-clicks don't even work. Ubuntu :: Restricted Items Don't Initialize Fully

Feb 10, 2010

It's my CPU scaling and dual mode modem that aren't initializing properly on startup. The CPU scaling starts up in 'performance' mode and doesn't throttle back to 'on demand' like it should, and like it used to. Also the modem starts up as a usb mass storage device and the boot process should, and used to, toggle it into modem mode.

It certainly looks like it is a user rights issue as both devices require me to sudo the change from userspace. I'm on 9.10 64bit with a fairly new install, I havent done anything abnormal to the system except change the default lang from UTF-8 to ISO-8859. other than that I've only installed packages from synaptic, and done the recommended updates. I don't know exactly where the problem started.

I'm a noobee at reading log files. I generally only get about a half a screenfull read before I realize my eyes are crossing and my brain has gone completely non-functional. Here is the output from dmesg... Very near the end I see it recognize the Cricket(modem) device, but I see no errors...
