Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Not Loading Automatically?

Jan 11, 2010

I am a complete newbie to Ubuntu. Just installed it today and everything I have done so far has been found and worked out using forums such as this. So far I have installed ndiswrapper, the latest version, and got my wifi card working. In fact I am online now writing this!

Problem is when I shutdown and reboot. My wireless connection won't automatically run. It won't even show in the top left that I have a wifi connection. There is no "enable wireless" tickbox. I have to type in the terminal:

sudo depmod - a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
then my WEP key
then it works.

BTW I have no idea what those commands do I just found them on a forum. I can't seriously have to do this everything I boot up?!! Can this be automated or is there a better fix?

Ubuntu Networking :: Automatically Join Open Wifi?

Apr 19, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my Dell studio 1557 with a broadcom 1394 wireless card.

I am wondering if it is possible to set my laptop to autojoin open wireless networks. I like traveling and it popped into my head. I am a novice linux user, long time windows user. I know its possible just how. like a terminal script or just a check mark somewhere. i broke my right hand and arm in a motorcycle wreck recently.

Ubuntu Networking :: PC Keeps Trying To Connect To Automatically Nearby WiFi

Jul 5, 2011

Well I have a nearby WiFi network that my PC keeps trying to connect to automatically. I don't know why since mine is closer. I tried changing the channel and have deleted the offending network under "Edit Connections" but of course it keeps comming back. The problem is most annoying on boot up when it starts trying to connect automatically as soon as the desktop is loaded. Is there anything Ican do to "hide" this network from my PC's vission?

Ubuntu :: Usb-storage Not Loading Automatically After Kernel Update?

Oct 3, 2010

I just noticed that my USB sticks are not automatically mounted anymore after having updated kernel from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic on my Acer Extensa 5220 laptop. It still works if I "sudo modprobe usb-storage". What might have gone wrong? I'm not experiencing this on my desktop machine also running 10.04. How to fix this permanently? And now I remember that I'm not able to use my mobile broadband either (Nokia N900 in PC Suite mode through USB). It's just not detected anymore. It must suffer from this same problem. I tried to roll back to the previous kernel, but then the restricted driver for my Broadcom WLAN refuses to install

Ubuntu :: Stop (when Loading) Looking For Wifi Signal's In The 5000000 Khz Range?

Apr 30, 2010

Does anyone know how to stop ubuntu (when loading) looking for wifi signal's in the 5000000 khz range? I have a problem with other devices around my house that operate on this range of frequencies and it effects ubuntu while its booting, to the extent that it wont load. My wireless router is on the 2000000 khz range therefore I only really need Ubuntu to look for devices on this range of frequencies. If anyone know a way to prevent Ubuntu looking on the 5000000 khz range by editing something I would be very greatful to know how to do this.

As at the moment I am having to boot about 5 times until it eventually decided to load. Sometimes the only way I can get in, is by going into recovery mode, dropping to terminal and typing in: "sudo gdm" and eventually I get it. Which is a right pain. Please see my previous post outlining my problem: [URL]

I am running Debian Squeeze with icewm as desktop environment. I am trying to start feh automatically when the desktop finishes loading. I have tried crontab -e with @reboot /usr/bin/feh /home/user/photos/ & I think that the best way to do this would be to monitor for the x-session-manag process. The reason I think this would be a good solution is that I killed x-session-manag and it killed my x-session and straight to command line interface.

Debian Hardware :: Wifi Driver Automatic Loading?

Nov 23, 2010

I have broadcom wireless card in my system. I got the driver from broadcom site. I compiled it against my kernel and the module works fine. How could I automatically load this driver at startup. I followed the instruction found in the driver source README file. But its not working. The steps I followed are as follows:

# load driver
# cp wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
# depmod -a

The same steps I followd in 2.6.26 kernel and it worked fine. Now its not working in my new kernel 2.6.32.For manually loading it I have to remove the ssb driver and the download this one. Otherwise it will not work. So I tried adding ssb to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklistle. But that driver loads during startup. So each time I have to manually unload the ssb driver and insert the new one.

OpenSUSE Network :: Nfs No Longer Starting Automatically With Wifi?

Jul 27, 2010

Running openSuse 11.2-64 on a DualCore / 2Gb machine.I have 3 nfs shares described in my /etc/fstabAll three were mounted at boot time when I was connecting to the network through the wired interface (eth0).I need to use the wireless interface, and even if that interface is up and running well (I use ifup), the nfs client doesn't start... if just after boot I do a mount -a or simply a nfs start, everything comes up and runs well. This machine will not be used by myself, and the users cannot just jump into a command line and type nfs start or even mount -a (they would need su privileges...)I have disabled the eth0, killed the eth0 config (with yast) edited /etc/sysconfig/nfs and setted the NFS_START_SERVICE to yes to force the gssd and idmapd to always start even if there was no nfs entry in fstab, but nothing changed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Intel 5100 WiFi Card - Dell Latitude E6400 - Suddenly WiFi LED On The Computer Stops Blinking

May 4, 2011

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.

What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.

On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

Ubuntu Networking :: Loading Pppoe After All Processes

Apr 22, 2010

I just got lost. I have set up a server with two nics. eth0 for the lan and eth1 for the Internet. I have dhcp running on the server. I am using adsl and have run pppoeconf to set up my connection. I have turned off dhcp and nat on the router so the device works as a modem using bridge mode. The problem I have is that the server keeps hanging when loading pppoe or at least when pppoe has completed getting the public DNS addresses. What happens is that the Internet connection can be opened from the /network/interfaces file. This seems to work but it does not return control to the server - the process runs, the DNS addresses obtained but the rest of the processes following at start up never load (i.e. power on the server and the processes that load then).

So I thought that this must be in the wrong place. I commented out the items in the interface file and added a couple of entries to end of rc.local, my logic being that this will load after everything has finished. Nearly right but not. What happens is that all processes run and then the pppoe program runs and the DNS addresses obtained (seen from a screen connected to the server). But the system then stops. What should happen is that it continues to load and at the end return the login prompt. From a client I can see that dhcp has loaded since a private IP has been allocated but I cannot login from that client since the server has not finished loading.I am not sure what I have not done here since reading round I can see that what I have followed is the same as everyone else but I get a different result.
