Ubuntu Networking :: Setup Routes For A Gateway That Resides On A Different Subnet
Jul 29, 2011
I'm trying to setup routes for a gateway that resides on a different subnet. Our ISP leased us a block of IPs and told us to route through the current gateway, which is on a different subnet than our current block of addresses. To test, I've enabled one of the new addresses on one of the existing machines, which works. That machine has an address on the same subnet as the gateway, however.
The gateway address is 24.111.1.177 One of the new addresses I'm trying to use is 96.2.192.130, netmask= 255.255.255.240, broadcast= 96.2.192.143 Obviously, I can't just specify that gateway in /etc/network/interfaces without some routing, which is where the trouble I'm having is. The machine I'm trying to set this up on is part of 2 networks - one internal, on two different NICs.

I have a temporary system up with wlan0 and eth2.
I want the eth0 address to be the gateway for accessing the internet on wlan0.
How do I setup static routes?
I'm not too keen with networking...

I am realtively new to BGP. I use BGP in my network to advertise my /20 subnet. What i would like to know is what is the point of accepting routes from your neighbouring AS(ISP)?My ISP has given me a default gateway, and no matter what I want to reach on the internet I have to go through that default gateway, so why populate the routing table with soo many routes?also, as i understand it, there are 3 kinds of routes that you can accept, those are full routes, directly connected routes and default routes. What is the diffrence between them and again how do they affect routing since my network only has the one default gateway?

I've rent a server from a Germany data center,They use a single IP as their gateway that is not in range of my servers IP,Strangly server is working well and when I use 'route -n' command the gateway which is in other subnet appears properly./etc/sysconfig/network contains no gateway IP and I don't know how they set the default gateway while after reboot the gateway is the same, also the IP is static and there's now DHCP.I need to know how they did it so I can do the same on my VPSes.

This is slackware 12. I'm trying to share my internet connection (on eth0) with a computer connected to eth1.
eth0 is 192.168.0.101, eth1 is 192.168.1.100 (different subnets).
But when I try to make eth1's default gateway the same as eth0's, see the error I get code...

My company hosts five Servers with CentOS 5 installed in a Data Center. The Data Center assigns a VLAN to each customer so that they can organize customers and also count traffic. The VLAN assigned to my company is in the form 62.103.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.240 so the IPs that we can use in our Servers are 13. The first IP in the VLAN (for example 62.103.1.1) is the Gateway and the rest, that are calculated from the subnet mask, are assigned to servers(62.103.1.2 up to 62.103.1.14).
The problem I have is that we have run out of IPs in our VLAN. We have used all IPs and we want some more. The Data Center can assign new IPs but not grow our VLAN IPs by expanding the subnet mask. So they gave us a new VLAN with some IPs (for example 62.104.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.192) They told me that I had to use as gateway the gateway of the first VLAN 62.103.1.1 and assign the new IPs as usual. So I assigned to one of the CentOS 5 servers the IP 62.104.1.2 and set the gateway to 62.103.1.1. Unfortunately this did not work and we could not establish connectivity to the Internet.Is it possible to assign a gateway outside of the IPs that are in the subnet? Could it be a problem with the VLAN setup by the Data Center?

I have 4 debian boxes networked together through a basic 5 port switch. I am trying to simulate 2 Local Area Networks joined together by a WAN. Right now I can communicate with A <--> B, B<----> C, C<----->D. However, I cannot communicate with Host A to Host D which is the whole point of this experiment. It has to be my static routing is not right. This is a confusing area to me. Right now my routes are

How do I add a route that doesn't go away after a reboot? I tried adding to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-wlan0 and /etc/sysconfig/static-routes but neither of them did anything when I restarted network and NetworkManager. route command does not show the new route that I added. I tried this too - routes.html and there were no errors but the new route doesn't show up with the route command.I added "192.168.13.88/255.255.255.255 via 192.168.13.101 dev wlan0"

I have TWO L3 + router switch (say switch1 and switch2). I created VLAN100 with VLAN ID 100 in both the switches. I created router 192.168.1.1/24 in Switch1. I created router 192.168.2.1/24 in Switch2. Switch1 is connected with 1.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 1.1 gateway. Switch2 is connected with 2.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 2.1 gateway. Both Switch1 and switch2 are connected by a trunk to carry VLAN100 data.
1)I have few PCs of 1.x connected to say Switch1 Is it possible for PC with IP 192.168.1.100(x) to ping PC with IP 192.168.2.100(y)?What are the configuration required in both switches to make them communicate ? All the device in both the subnets should ping/communicate with each other.
2)Move PC (192.168.1.100) to switch2. Move PC (192.168.2.100)to switch1.What will happen when PC(1.100) ping (2.100) and vice versa?What will happen when PC(say 1.80 in switch1) pings PC (say 1.100 in switch2) and vice versa? I've been trying to setup an IPSec connection between two routers, but am having trouble with the actual packet routing.
My setup currently is two local networks (192.168.1.0/24[netLANA] and 192.168.0.0/24[netLANB]) that are connected to their own routers (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 respectively). The routers are both connected to the 194.26.1.0/24[netWAN] network. I wish to setup an IPSec connection between the two routers, to act in tunnel mode between the two local networks.
The first router is a linux box (on the netLANA network) that I am setting up using the ipsec-tools, and the other is a Netgear ProSafe FVS318G (on the netLANB). I've set them both up to have the same configuration for IPSec. Also, on the linux router I have setup a route like this:
Code:
$ route add -net 192.168.1.0/24 wlan0
So that all traffic destined for the netLANB network will be routed to the wlan0 interface (netWAN in this case, and therefore over the tunnel).
My problem is that if I ping from any host on netLANA, I can see the ICMP reply comes back to the linux router, but it doesn't get back to the original host.
From the linux router, here is the tcpdump of the ping:
Code:
$ tcpdump -n -S -i any
17:06:26.308353 IP 192.168.0.5 > 192.168.1.4: ICMP echo request, id 1036, seq 1, length 64
17:06:26.308780 IP 194.16.1.6 > 194.16.1.5: ESP(spi=0x0ea08914,seq=0x2f), length 116
17:06:26.316287 IP 194.16.1.5 > 194.16.1.6: ESP(spi=0x0be1036c,seq=0x2f), length 116
17:06:26.316287 IP 192.168.1.4 > 192.168.0.5: ICMP echo reply, id 1036, seq 1, length 64

I have been searching google for a while now and have not found exactly what I am looking for. I would like to use my fresh install of ubuntu server 11.04 as my router/gateway for my home. I am not an expert at linux by any means but I can usually figure stuff out. I believe I need iptables, bind, and a few others probally. It eventually will also be a samba server but I have done a little with samba before. I do have 2 network cards, my router at the moment is starting to die and would love to have a more powerful router. I would also like to figure out how to do port forwarding in the router, as well as be able to see the load on the network cards. Maybe there is a program to show usage by user? As well as be able to do packet pritorization.

I have setup a second machine with slackware 13.37, it is a "supermicro" which I picked up though my work. the idea was to set it up as a gateway and gradually expand my knowledge of sub networking, iptables, forwarding and the like. after a couple nights of forum searching and "o'reilly" book reading I am still unable to get a proper route working thru the "supermicro" to our dsl router.
What is setup?: I will start from my main machine simply calling it slackbox
slackbox: has two ethernet cards which i have given static ip's to
eth0 192.168.2.16 and eth1 192.168.3.11
eth0 (192.168.2.16) is connected to a switch and then to our dsl router, it is working, I am using right now to work on this forum.
eth1 (192.168.3.11) is connected to the "supermicro" thru a cross-over cable, it also is working, pinging the "supermicro" works.
default gateway on slackbox is set to be 192.168.3.10 (the supermicro)
I only set slackbox's default as 192.168.3.10 when testing to see if the supermicro gateway will work
supermicro: also has two ethernet cards which i have given static ip's to
eth0 192.168.3.10 (this is the card with the cross-over cable connected)
pinging 192.168.3.11 (the slackbox) works.
eth1 192.168.2.24 is connected to our switch as well, it is working, pinging our dsl router works.
default gateway on supermicro is set in rc.inet.conf to be 192.168.2.1 (which is our dsl router)
All my machines have two ethernet cards. This has just made it easy for me to test the setup while still having internet access on slackbox. Yet when testing the gateway from slackbox thru supermicro I am getting "Destination Host Unreachable".

setup 2 gateway in my email server(opensuse).
now i wan to setup 2 internet lines for my email server, which mean that either one of the line is down, i still can receive mail from another line.
Example
Internet line 1 = ISP1
Internet line 2 = ISP2
my email server got 3 nic which...
eth0 = 192.168.1.2 (255.255.255.0) (from ISP1 GW 192.168.1.1)
eth1 = 192.168.2.2 (255.255.255.0) (from ISP2 GW 192.168..2.1)
eth2 = 168.168.1.2 (255.255.0.0) (connect to local LAN)
now existing GW set on the server is 192.168.1.1, mail receive and send through ISP1. now we wish to set somethings that once the ISP1 line is down, the server will auto switch to ISP2 gateway and continue send and receive mail without manually change of settings

I have 1 root-server with 2 NICs, both having their own internet IP addresses:
Code: eth0 = 8x.x.x.183
eth2 = 8x.x.x.205 We only have one gateway on that network:
Code: gateway = 8x.x.x.1 We want to use eth2 for postfix + http, and eth0 for all the other stuff.
How can this be setup ? With route / ip route / iptables ?

I have 17 system (sys1,sys2,sys3.....sys17) in my office, and i am willing to setup a dedicated system to act as a firewall for that i have selected sys1 with two NIC(eth0 for local network and eth1 for internet) and i have configured to access internet in my office for that i have opened a wellknown port 80.but my clients are not accessing the internet..
and please check my sample IP configuration !!!
interface : eth1 (ISP IP)just for example
IP :192.168.0.2
gateway:192.168.0.1
dns:202.56.230.5
dns:202.56.230.6
Interface : eth0 (my local lan )
192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
IP address of xp clients ranges form 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.16 with default 255.255.255.0
my question is that which gateway address and dns i have to give to my clients for accessing internet ?...

Computer A has two network interfaces. One is on a 255.255.255.240(eth0) subnet and has an IP of 192.168.1.6 and the other is on 255.255.255.0(eth1) subnet and has an IP of 192.168.1.64.
eth1 can communicate with modem(192.168.1.254), which also acts as a gateway to the Internet.
eth0 can communicate with my internal LAN, which consists of several computers including Computer B. This subnet 255.255.255.240 has it's own gateway to the internet at 192.168.1.1. However gateways will not apply to this scenario. I just added them to help paint a picture of my network.
What I am trying to do is tunnel http from a web server running on the modem(192.168.1.254) across to Computer B within my internal LAN and be able to view the http content via a browser. Sure I can just open a browser on Computer A, but I'm running Computer A headless. I can also curl it from a command line, but I'd like to learn how to tunnel across a subnet. If I get this to work, would I be able to interact with the site(i.e. make modem configuration changes)? or would it just be one way? How do I tunnel data from the eth1 subnet over to the eth0 subnet and over to Computer B on my internal LAN?
What I tried was the following:
I setup a proxymini to run on Computer A and have it listening on the eth0 interface on port 8080 by using this command 'proxymini -l 192.168.1.6 -p 8080'.
Then on computer B, I setup httptunnel -a 80 -p 192.168.1.254:80 -d 192.168.1.64:8080.
Then I should be able to view the site through a browser on port 80 on the computer I run httptunnel? This setup isn't working.

New ubuntu desktop user here. I've been working with Ubuntu servers for over 3 yrs, using Windows as clients. I have OpenVPN running on an ubuntu 10.04 server, and it has worked well with Windows OpenVPN clients connecting. I took those same settings and applied them to this new install of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop, and now openvpn seems to be failing when we get to the routes (I wrestled with the network-manager "secrets" issue for hours, but that works now).
I performed the following:
sudo openvpn --config fogbank-ny1.ovpn
--all is well, we're connecting/yay then *screech* FAIL--

I am using the suggested openvpn routes. If I connect from Windows (actually the .ovpn file is taken directly from the working windows machine).. all is well, routes work fine all traffic is routed thru the VPN -- same way it's worked for over a yar. I assume that this is what is causing networkmanager to fail as well. those logs indicate that it has connected to the vpn, but is probably stopping when it gets to routes.

I've got a 10.04 machine with two ethernet interfaces. I have two separate outside internet connections. This machine is connected to both interfaces. But it DOES NOT route between them. It's just a host on both subnets. Again, no routing is to go through this host. I'd like to force traffic originating on each ethernet port out to that network's internet connection.
Here's the desired setup:
eth0 192.168.12.37/24 gw 192.168.12.1
eth1 192.168.1.37/24 gw 192.168.1.1
I'd like traffic on the 192.168.1.37 address to go out through the 192.168.1.1 gateway. I have a program bound to that address and need it's traffic to go out ONLY through the 192.168.1.1 gateway. Any other traffic on the machine should go out the 192.168.12.1 gateway.
The logic is: source IP is 192.168.1.37, dest IP is any then go out only through 192.168.1.1 source IP is 192.168.12.37, dest IP is any then go out through 192.168.12.1 first or 192.168.1.1 next. The point is source on the .1.37 address must always go out the .1.1 gateway and NEVER through .12.1. Whereas traffic on the .12.37 address should try going out the .12.1 gateway first but can go out the .1.1 gateway if the .12.1 connection is down. I could live with this failover option. I could accept that traffic on the .12.37 address was likewise limited to its own gateway.

I just set up NIC bonding in Ubuntu 10.4, following these instructions, and I've got it working except for one problem: Every time I up or down a network device, or every time the system reboots, my routes go all to hell with eth0 and eth1 entries next to my bond0 entries. When the eth0 and eth1 entries show up, my connection is hosed and I have to go in via the maintenance IP to kill each route one at a time, leaving only bond0. Here's how I want my routes to look at all times:

On a server with 4 network interfaces, sometimes not all 4 are plugged in. All 4 interfaces have the same IP address. Sometimes the machine cannot access the local LAN, but can access the internet via a router on the local LAN, after a reboot. What I find is that the routing table looks like this:
Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth2
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth3
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 2 0 0 eth1
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 3 0 0 eth2
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 4 0 0 eth3
On the console I cannot reach any local host, but I can reach internet hosts. Pinging the gateway router 172.30.0.2 gets no answer. When I manually change it to this:
Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1 0 0 eth0
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 2 0 0 eth1
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 3 0 0 eth2
172.30.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 4 0 0 eth3
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 2 0 0 eth1
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 3 0 0 eth2
0.0.0.0 172.30.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 4 0 0 eth3
Then all is well (can ping local hosts including the gateway router). I do have metric specified in the /etc/network/interfaces file like this:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 172.30.16.8
netmask 255.255.0.0

address 172.30.16.8
netmask 255.255.0.0
network 172.30.0.0

metric 2
auto eth2
iface eth2 inet static
address 172.30.16.8
netmask 255.255.0.0

metric 3
auto eth3
iface eth3 inet static
address 172.30.16.8

broadcast 172.30.255.255
metric 4
Apparently that metric setting applies only to the gateway route, not the LAN route. Is there a way to specify the LAN route metric, too?

I have some CISCO,Linux related problem with 2 Class C subnets:
192.168.64.0 -> PC5
192.168.65.0 -> PC6
Here's a picture of my situation: [URL]
HQ has to have 2 STATIC routes in order those 2 "PCs" mentioned above to have end to end connectivity with NETWORK A and NETWORK B. Now I try with
route0 -> network: 0.0.0.0, mask: 0.0.0.0, nexthop: Serial 0/0/0
route1 -> network: 0.0.0.0, mask: 0.0.0.0, nexthop: Serial 0/0/1
And it seems to work but I don't think it's proper! I feel it's kinda wrong ... but all my other attempts to set another couple of static routes ends in "Request timed out" and thus connection lost.

After editing my network connections gateway setup as 192.168.1.1 I get back 0.0.0.0 after I run nm-tool. I'm using Ubuntu ver 9.04 setup on my VMware server.

I have set up qmailtoaster as a gateway for exchange.
my smtproutes contain this:
thedomain.com:mail.exchange.com
and my rcpthosts contain:
thedomain
The problem I am facing now is, the exchange was able to send mails through me alright. But when mails come in, qmailtoaster is suppose to forward the mails to the exchange server but it is not, rather the mails are sitting in the toaster's queue.
