Ubuntu Networking :: Change The Ports That Something Like Xchat Uses To Make It Use The Same Port As Firefox?
Sep 3, 2010
How do I change the ports that something like xchat uses to make it use the same port as firefox? I am currently somewhere that has all non browser ports blocked.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwhal, 64-bit. I've been using it since Alpha, and Firefox and xChat have always frozen my system. I update daily, so I know I'm on the newest updates, yet they still freeze my system. I've tried doing a total uninstall on both of them and reinstalled to the same freezes.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.1, and a motherboard which has two Ethernet ports on it.
What I would like to do is bridge these ports, so I can plug in another Ethernet cable and run it to an unmanaged switch in my room (handy for my work laptop when on-call and building other PCs, etc).
I.e. Router --> 8-Port Switch --> My PC.
Eth 0 --> 192.168.1.100 static
Eth 1 --> 5-Port Switch --> DHCP
I believe this is the config to make the ports bridged:
ifconfig Eth0 0.0.0.0
ifconfig Eth1 0.0.0.0
brctl addbr Bridge0
brctl addif Bridge0 Eth0
brctl addif Bridge0 Eth1
ifconfig Bridge0 up
- How do I save this so upon reboot it sticks?
- How do I force Eth0 to remain as a static IP of 192.168.1.100?

I have a vps server running certain services which can be accessed via a web browser (e.g webmin control panel), but I have recently been unable to access these services from my home machine using Firefox 5.0, running ubuntu 11.04.
Example:
I can access the server on port 80 fine, eg: [URL]
However I cannot access my webmin control panel on: [URL]
The pages takes ages to load and then times out. Same with transmission-daemon on: [URL]
Everything is set up fine on my server, the ports are open in firewall etc. and I can access these pages fine from my work computer.
This has only started happening in the last day or two and had been working fine up till then. I have not messed around at all with the firewall on my home machine. I have tried other browsers besides Firefox with same result.

In emule p2p filesharing there's this thing called the id that is low if you do not configure your router for certain ports to be listening for incoming connections, forwarded by the router to ports on your pc. When the id is low, your downloads take longer or something like that. But if you have no listening port, how can a peer download from you?

I have 2 (some future machines will have 4) ethernet ports. I want to have them configured such that if any gets unplugged, as long as at least one of them is plugged in, it can reach the network (even if via a different IP address), and it can be reached (at least when trying a working IP address). I tried this for /etc/network/interfaces:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?

I set up a vnc connection to my machine the other day and while doing that checked out any open ports.To my astonishment my ftp port is open, although I double checked the firewall and there's no check in the checkbox for the ftp port. I didn't add a "other ports" rule or anything as well.So, how would I be able to fix that?

I've a strange situation in my network: pcs gatewayed to another network, then a proxy, then a firewall.pcs --> router --> cloud --> router --> proxy --> switch <-- fw --> Internet(router, proxy and fw are alla connected by the switch)Some months ago the situation was: pcs --> router --> cloud --> router --> switch <-- fw --> Internet.There was a static route in the router that gatewayed the packets to the firewall, but that route has been deleted, and I cannot reinsert it because I've not access to the routers, so we have to use a proxy to go to Internet, and we have the configuration of all pcs (Windows XP) with the fields "proxy" filled.The proxy ha only one NIC gatewayed to the firewall, and Ubuntu and squid installed, but we have some problems:
1. we cannot use email, so how can we make port 110 and 25 packets pass?
2. squid seems to slow down, so can we uninstall it and route all the traffic directly to the firewall to speed up?

I am playing around with transparent proxies, The current way I am doing things is the program makes a request to a computer on port 80, I use
Code:
iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --destination-port 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 1234 to redirect to my proxy that I am playing with. the proxy will send out a request to port 81 (as all outbound port 80 are being fed back in to the proxy) so I want to do something like
Code:
iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --destination-port 81 -j DNAT --to-destination xxxx:80 The problem lies with the xxxx part. How do I change the destination port without changing changing the destination ip? Or am I doing this setup completely wrong,

I have been working in Linux for the past two years.And working in squid for the past 6 months.The following is my Setup
ETH1 - ISP1 (Active)
ETH2 - LAN (Active)
ETH3 - ISP2 (Inactive)
Using Iptables I forward 80 port through squid (3128).Other ports just get connected in the proxy machine itself since it has IP_FORWARD enabled. All my client machines browsers enabled with "Use proxy 3128". I just want to make all the port to pass through squid server.

I have a Suse 10.3 router with 4 network cards. 1 is to connect to the big network and thereby also the internet, 2 are for 'client' subnets and I want to use the last one as a DMZ. In this DMZ will be a web server which has to be accessible from the other 2 subnets and from the big network. I could do it with a few simple clicks in Yast firewall, but I have some issues with this firewall and there for I want to use it as minimal as possible, using Iptables.
So now I'm struggling a bit with Iptables. Basicly what I'm looking for is how to block all ports but 80 in this last subnet with iptables.

My college providers shifted to a different setting.. I'm not sure what needs to be done. On windows, under the connections tab you need to change the proxy settings and put in the IP address and enter the port to 3000. Questions:
1. where lies the linux (ubuntu 10.04) variant to execute the operation.
2. What can be the major obligations of such a change?
I am sure its siimple enough, but I can't get my net to work properly. The connection provided to the internet is through wireless routers.

VERY new to linux, erm but I have an issue that needs solving!I recently moved to university, where their network blocks sftp port 22, this means that I cannot connect to my FTP server which is running a version of linux.Now I've got this ftp server connected to a seedbox and it was created using the following walk through..Code:I have written this guide for a friend, but I though it would be useful for others as well.
There are several guides floating around, but I found that most always cock up in some way. This one is tried and tested to work on Debian Etch (on an OVH rps, but should apply to most servers).If there is a new stable release of rtorrent/libtorrent then I will update this guide to show you how to update it (without reinstalling the whole server).
At the bottom there are also instructions to install ftp access & some network monitoring software.Basically, I would really like someone to be able to construct the commands on how to change the listen port for sftp connection on linux or add another port to the list that Linux would use so that I could put in through putty.

I'm simply trying to make a little restriction on www packets under two rules:
1. Allow inbound/outbound www packets (works!)
2. DROP inbound traffic to port 80 from source ports less than 1024. (DOES NOT WORK!)
Now, technically, when i use hping to test my rules, hping3 192.168.100.100 -S -p80 -s 1023 I should NOT receive any packets. However, i still receive packets, which means my rule that says less than 1024 does not work. (see below)
And this is my iptables rules in shell-script so far:
#!/bin/sh
DEFAULT_NIC=eth0
SERVER_IP="192.168.100.100"
ALLOWED_WWW_PORT=80
IPT="/sbin/iptables"

Right now I have a VPS that I tunnel through using SSH/Putty/Proxycap. I use it for a certain program which uses a certain port X for authentication, and a different port Y for its data. However, due to certain security protocols I need port X to be somewhat "transparent" so that the IP from the originator will be shown - whilst tunneling data through port Y. The conditions though, are that I cannot just change the X/Y port values in the application itself, these are company specific.
How would I go about doing this? Because right now, my understanding is that if Putty calls for a certain application to go through a socks server, ALL its ports will be directed at that. I want a certain port to be passthrough.

i have two questions and thought that anyone here could have the answers.first things first,i want to make firewall accept a range of ports (say 8000:9000) because im using mpd process manager to make some parallel processing, does anyone know the command that satisfy this?
the second thing is, when i open a range of ports like that, it would put my system at risk if some bad guys somehow identifies this range, is there is anything that solves that matter(i.e. makes the firewall monitor the packet, if its an mpd accept if not drop)
