I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. I'm struggling to enable wireless on my Acer Travelmate 2480. Wireless was turned on and off in Windows with a button which does nothing in Ubuntu.I think I must be missing drivers or something, but how do I get them if I can't connect to the internet?

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop and subsequently spent most of the day trying to get the wireless connection to work. Looks like I am not alone with Wireless issues Through searching and reading today I think the problem lies with the fact that the wireless on/off switch is not working. Under Windows, when I press the wifi toggle switch it starts flashing orange. I haven't managed to get it to do anything under Fedora.

(For the record, I have already read the other threads. Either they don't work for me or are too difficult.) My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 250. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-28 generic i686) after erasing Windows 7. At first, the usb wireless adapter worked. Then, I restarted the PC because of some updates and it didn't work anymore. In "edit connections" I find "Auto SpeedTouch8350DB" which is the wireless connection (on my sis's computer it works). When it tries to connect, I'm asked the password but it doesn't work.

I have just finished installing 9.04 via USB onto an Acer Travelmate C110.For the record, 9.10 refused to even boot on this laptop. I used universal-usb-installer and unetbootin, both without success.The installation completed successfully, except that wireless networking is not enabled. Can someone please point me to the correct resource whereby I can get the wireless nic working.

I have recently aquired this five year old laptop. I have fitted a new empty hard drive, downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 LTS using another computer, burnt it on a cd as an iso, changed the boot order on the Acer switched on and it starts to load - gives two small icons, I press Enter, it asks which language and whether I want to install it, I press the install list item, press enter it says Ubuntu and has half a dozen dots going red then white and then twenty to thirty seconds later the screen goes black and nothing happens. On another old laptop it worked fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got a brandnew Acer Travelmate Timeline X (13"). I do not really know if this is the right topic for my problem. But here it comes: The Acer uses a special smart battery with special chips in it controling the powermanagement of the battery and the system. In general there is a kernel module to handle this (sbs). But for me this does not work.I am using Squeeze and it does not recognize the battery. It always acts like being on AC power. If I unplugg the AC it runs with the battery till it is empty. But the ACPI can not recognize the battery and can not read how much lifetime it has. I tried the reassambling method. But this method does not work for me. Nevertheless I think the reassambling method does not run because there is no more developing on it because of the kernel modul.
What can I do? Will I have to wait till a new workaround of sbs comes out, which can handle my battery? I read about a BIOS hack that disables the smart battery functions. Should I try this? But I am not really firm in that kind of stuff and I will loose the guarantee. Has anyone got an idea?
This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10
Or is there an alternative way to do this?
I am trying to get a netgear wireless usb card to work correctly. I have installed ndiswrapper and gotten the correct drivers installed. The device does show up with lsusb. I can't seem to figure out how to get the wireless card to show up in gnome to start using it.
Update: the ndiswrapper module does load but when i run ndiswrapper -l it just shows the driver installed but, it is not showing my wireless usb card (0846:9020).
Is there an easy way (or even a hard way) to activate wireless network capability from the command prompt? I want to do this because I like to use the fvwm window manager, but I also like wireless! (In fvwm wireless networking doesn't start up automatically.)

I am using Ubuntu 10.10. In previous versions wireless was always activated.
I've been having problems with connecting to my router with my wireless card. Sometimes knetworkmanager attempts to the connect to my wireless via it's saved profile but it just stays on "Activating" for about 45 seconds then just stops. This only started happening a few days ago, so maybe the new kernel update has something to do with it?
I've tried to debugging the problem myself and have found if I reboot my router knetworkmanager can connect immediately to the wireless router, but also something interesting I found was is I assigned a IP Address and DNS manually on the saved profile it would connect with no problem (No reboot of router required), so it is indicating there is a problem with getting network settings. I've confirmed that the wireless card is not hard or soft blocked through rfkill.
I was using the box standard ath5k driver when this problem started happening and even went as far as a complete reinstall but ironically enough on first boot from a fresh install my wireless could not connect with the problem described above. I've since moved to the compat-wireless drivers but the problem remains.
I checked a couple of logs, one log file of significance was the wpa_suppliment log which was full of these messages: From all my debugging I can only assume that the kernel update is a possible cause for all of this as the problem occurring on first boot of a fresh install sounds like a general bug. after finally getting this machine tot run with ubuntu i am now on an ethernet connection because all of a sudden, my wireless says its disabled. When iwconfig is entered, it shows my wlan 0 but says power management : off. It is so frustrating because I feel like there should just be a button that says to switch it on haha. Please help, my wifi was working, and after a boot it is no longer.

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Acer Aspire One 110AB netbook and everything seems to work fine except the wireless - I can connect via ethernet no problem.
While the wireless can scan for networks - it seems them but they seem to be rather weak signals and also no matter never connect UNLESS I turn off ALL WEP/WPA security clearly not an option.
I had UBR installed and working fine for a month or so, wireless and everything. Then I did a clean re-install while trying to add WinXP to half of my drive.Anyway, with the new install, my wireless chip (BCM4312 802.11b/g) isn't switching on at all. I've tried installing the Broadcom driver that appears when I run Hardware Drivers, but that doesn't help.With the old install, the wireless switch and indicator light on the front of the netbook worked, now nothing.

I am running the 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 and cannot connect to the Internet. Everything appears to be working (and recognized) yet no connection. My Atheros eth0 (wired) works all the time but my eth2 (wireless Broadcom wireless does not under Ubuntu Linux) everything works well under Windows 7 (dual boot). Using WEP security. Shouldn't eth1 be the next scheme after eth0? Would eth1 be controlled by my wireless switch whereas eth2 not?

It's a Acer Aspire 4520 Laptop running Vista Ultimate. All Drivers are working fine except Wireless. No wireless adapter is shown in Device Manager. Acer website was no help at all, has the drivers but no adapters for download. This laptop shows that it has Acer signalUp, also shows 802.11b/g WLAN on the sticker. I've downloaded Athero AR??? wireless driver, did not do anything to help the problem, downloaded the broadcom one also and it did nothing. Works fine on the LAN cable but no wireless.

My Acer's Wireless randomly stops working until you fully shut down and start the computer.(Not Restart but Shutdown->Powebutton) I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid.
I am wondering if anyone knows why it would stop working properly, and/or how to fix it?
And since this is a off and on problem I might not be able to provide details immediately from time of crash, since I need my computer on the wireless.
One symptom that really stands out is that the cooling fan is spinning as fast as it possibly can and processor usage is spiking around 80/200 on a process called phy0.(relevancy unknown)
As I was typing this post on my other computer, my laptop crashed and I lost the lshw -C Network output I had. If asked to, I will post the one from when it is working. Also I will post any other info you need from when I can.
I am a Windows user, and have resigned myself to the concept that when things get completely FUBAR you need to just take a deep breath and start over.
Is there a procedure to completely delete and re-install Ubuntu, or should I delete its partition altogether, and re-create and re-install it? I can do that if I really have to.
I have not accumulated enough stuff here that I could not just make a clean start, if that will fix this mess. Somehow I imagined that this would be different from Windows, but maybe it really isn't.
What holds me back is seeing the multitude of people having trouble with wireless in 10.04. Is this a widespread problem that has a good chance of really getting fixed, soon?
At the minimum, It has fallen off the radar screen, although the hotel's system might have gone down, as it often does.
After installing Ubuntu 10.04 32bit on Acer Extensa 4420 with broadcom wireless adapter (internal) the wireless does not work. It says "Device Not Ready" under the wireless network tab.

Enter terminal command;
sudo apt-get install wifi-radar
Then reboot ubuntu 10.04 after it has installed, network manager should now detect wireless networks in range and allow connection, right click network manager icon and select "Enable Wireless" or "Disable wireless" as required to turn on or off. So many others have had problems getting the wifi to work with Acer Aspire D260 netbooks and ubuntu 10.04.

I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.

Have a dedicated Fedora 10 laptop so that I can learn everything I need to know. I am using an Acer Aspire 3000 with a fresh copy of Fedora 10 and KDE
The Aspire 3000 has a built in broadcom wireless card, with windows XP you activate the wireless using an LED button on the front of the laptop, but with Fedora I can't seem to do this.
I have found a couple of threads to fix this error on Ubuntu but nothing about fedora. I don't want to change OS as I have just about got this system running like clockwork. I have left the wireless until last as the normal LAN works fine.
Here is the result of my iwconfig:
sometime back when installing FC10, i tried installing ndis wrapper, and later i installed the broadcom driver bcm431 (i think). also i didn't remove the ndis wrapper.
all was fine untill a yesterday when ndis wrapper and some related packages got updated which somehow caused wireless to stop working. lspci showed the hardware present.
to get it to work, i did a yum erase ndis-wrapper, followed by a reboot.
it may not be the most elegent way, but it worked for me.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my Acer Aspire D260 netbook.I find it much easier to use than Windows 7.Everything has been working fine until I recently tried going on the internet via battery power instead of my A/C charger. My update manager is showing that I am up to date and Additional Drivers is showing that the Broadcom STA wireless driver is installed and in use.
