Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Crashes During NFS Transfer?

Oct 15, 2010

During NFS transfers my laptop crashes my entire wireless network. Laptop is a Samsung R20, Ubuntu 32-bit 10.04 with atheros AR5001 wifi and ath5k driver. What works: ->NFS is working. I have 3 other machines on wired connections that use NFS happily. And the NFS shares work fine if i plug the laptop into a wired connection. ->Wifi works. I can browse the internet and a large download (700MB) with bittorrent takes 8 mins and doesn't down the wireless.

What doesn't work: ->NFS and wireless together. Any NFS transfer over wireless eventually downs the wifi. Forl example streaming one 3mb mp3 in rhythmbox crashes wireless after playing for about 30 seconds. When the wireless fails it breaks for ALL computers and the only way to re=establish it is by restarting the router. Wired connections remain OK even when wireless is down (both from the same router).->I have a 64-bit desktop with wifi that also suffers the same problem but that doesn't matter so much since it also has a wired connection.

Server :: Large File Transfer Over Scp Or Samba Crashes Wireless Connection?

Feb 3, 2010

I'm setting up a htpc system (Zotac IONITX-F based) based upon a minimal install of ubuntu 9.10, with no GUI other than xbmc. It's connected to my router (d-link dir-615) over a wifi connection configured for static IP (ath9k driver), with the following /etc/network/interfaces:

Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
#auto eth0

[code]....

Network is fine, samba share to the media direction works, until I try to upload a large file to it from my desktop system. Then it downloads a couple of percents at a really nice speed, but then it stalls and the box becomes unpingable (Destination Host Unreachable), even after canceling the transfer, requiring a restart of the network.

Same thing when I scp the file from my desktop system to the htpc, same thing when I ssh into the htpc, and scp the file from there. Occasionally (rarely) the file does pass through, but most of the time the problem repeats itself. Transfer of small text files causes no problems, and the same goes for the fanart downloads done by xbmc. I tried the solution proposed in this thread, and set mtu to 800 in the interfaces file, but the problem persists.

Ubuntu Networking :: Torrent Downloading In 11.04 Causes Unstable Wireless Transfer

Jul 2, 2011

Every time I download torrents in Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop, using Transmission or Deluge clients, the wireless transfer speed abruptly drops off, becomes very choppy, and in general doesn't remain stable. It's not only the torrent download that slows down, but it's everything including web surfing, even though I'm not maxing out my connection speed. It's not that I'm getting disconnected from my router, it's just that the wireless transfer speed drops off, becomes intermittent, and never gets back up to full speed.

At first I thought that my ISP was throttling my connection, but this issue doesn't happen with a direct cable connection to my router, nor did it happen when I was running Ubuntu 10.04 before. It also doesn't happen when I'm downloading the exact same torrents over wireless using my netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. This issue ONLY seems to happen when using a bittorrent client while on wireless on Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop. I can max out my internet connection speed by streaming videos, downloading from FTP, etc. using wireless just fine, and the transfer speed remains stable. This also seems to happen with a couple of different wireless USB adapters (rt73usb or rtl8187 drivers).

Ubuntu Networking :: Upgrading To 10.10 Now Occasionally Crashes Wireless?

Oct 22, 2010

I have an HP 311c netbook which was dual booted XP home and Ubuntu 10.04. Everything worked fine apart from the internal wireless modem (the only reason I needed XP as it worked under Windows) I then upgraded to 10.10 and that started my network problems.

I upgraded Ubuntu using terminal and update-manager, which went ok. The network was identified, but more often than not it now seems to crash the network (and seems to happen sporadically too) - seems to be at some stage whenever the netbook is on now. This then prevents all other PCs/Ipods from accessing the internet. The only way to recover is to reboot my wireless network and the internet modem (and shutdown the netbook).

I got so infuriated with it that I clean installed from a USB key I created, Wireless network runs fine with all other PCs and IP equipment

Network: Linksys 11 B
Internet modem Virgin Media

One strange thing that happened when I upgraded, but seems to have now disappeared, is that I managed to get it to identify and actually use the internal modem, although that 'Mobile Internet' option under Network Manager has now disappeared from the list, so I cannot activate it..

Fedora Hardware :: Low Transfer Rate When Copying Large Files Over Wireless

Jan 11, 2010

I just bought a HP 3085dx laptop with an intel 5100 agn wireless card.
The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

On the HPL
[jerry@bigbox ~]$ ifconfig wlan0
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:246:36:AC4

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.

Ifup says it connects to the wifi (Wayport Access @ McDonalds) I have available, but browsers don't reach the internet while Ifup is connected, so I can't sign on and get access to anything more recent. OpenSUSE Wireless :: Computer Crashes When Connecting To Internet?

May 20, 2011

This problem started a few days ago. Whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless connection via network manager, my computer completely crashes, going to a black screen with no input from keyboard or mouse. It forces me to reboot using the power switch. Everything works fine when I connect to an ethernet cable, so I am sure it's a problem with my wireless driver.

I already tried (successfully) reinstalling the ath9k driver via compat wireless as was the advice from other forums, but this had no effect. I'm currently running opensuse 11.4, and haven't had this problem until a few days ago

This problem seems a bit ridiculous for a task as simple as connecting to a wireless network, so I'm convinced that either there is some sort of relatively simple way of fixing it, or windows really is the only decent operating system out there..

Ubuntu Networking :: Transfer Of Data From PC To Mac ?

Jul 26, 2011

Recently I had a situation where I had to transfer data from a PC to a Mac. Usually we simply convert the data as necessary, ie. bookmarks, contacts, etc. move the info to a dropbox account and use Windows networking to access the dropbox from a Mac. Well, there was a network issue and it was suggested that I boot to Ubuntu and do this. We do have Ubuntu on a flash drive but I was lost from there. Can anyone point me in the direction of documentation or assist me in understanding how this would be accomplished? I have a Mac, PC and Linux box at home so hopefully I have all the necessary tools to test this out.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Transfer Speed Only 11.3Mb/s

Jun 19, 2011

I just noticed that files are transferring between my two computers at no more than 11.3Mb/s no matter what I do.

I regularly use sshfs to mount a drive on my main computer. But after noticing a dismal speed of 10Mb/s when copying a file, I thought maybe sshfs is slow. So I tried scp, and I'm getting 11.3Mb/s with scp. Using the blowfish cypher gave me no change to this, still exactly 11.3Mb/s.

I have a Gigabit network except for the cable, which is a 10meter, 100Mb/s cable.
I have a custom modified sysctl.conf file which I'll post here if needed.

Is there anything I can do about this pathetic speed ? Maybe a modification to my ssh config ? sysctl ? anything ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Permissions With Shares - Transfer Files

Feb 14, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now, but still have trouble with some of the finer workings of linux. I have a laptop that I use for general computing, and a desktop hooked up to a TV as sort of a remote backup/htpc. A problem I run into is when I transfer files, they get transfered with the owner set as the original computer's account, and I can't do anything until I open a remote viewer and gksudo nautilus to change the permissions of the file. I looked at articles about permissions and uid's, gid's, and umask but can't figure out how to apply it to my situation.

I thought about doing something with groups but am not sure exactly what, and anyway, default group settings only give read access and what I'm really looking for is the ability to manipulate files and folders across the entire /home dir on my desktop from my laptop. Desktop is running 8.04 and laptop is running 9.10. BTW I am currently sharing through smbfs. I read that this has been replaced by cifs, but at the moment I would prefer not the mess with things if I don't need to.
