I can connect via VNC to a remote desktop. I can see the initial screen when the connection is made. The mouse moves fine but the rest of the screen never updates. I can move around an object but I dont see that I am moving the object. All I see is the mouse moving on the screen. Hopefully I explained that well enough. I really don't know where to start. Whether it is something on my computer that need to be installed or the remote desktop.
ive tried to update my test-laptop (thinkpad t43) to the actual beta. the dist-upgrade worked whitout problems, but after rebooting the x-server seems to work, but screen is empty...it seems that the xserver is crashing:

i am a novice with linux but i love to use it. i am using ubuntu on an acer aspire5736z and after putting 10 on mysystem in conjunction with windows 7 (choose os at start up), i updated to 11. however after the installation had reset the computer, the screen is completely blank. i can hear the start up music so i know it has started but nothing!
After updating ubuntu 10.04 a few days back, I get a black screen at startup without a flashing cursor or anything. I'm kind of new to ubuntu but not completely.

Just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 and I understand I'm not the only one having a problem with a blank screen after booting.Everything worked perfectly under 10.10; I had no complaints at all. I can use the new purple-backgrounded GRUB to boot into an older version of ubuntu, which is what I'm using at the moment to write this message.
The first time I booted into the upgraded version I got my background wallpaper but no other interface elements. I rebooted and now whenever ubuntu boots everything looks normal until I end up with a black screen and a white mouse pointer. As I move the pointer around it changes to a cursor so it is definitely interacting with the interface, I just can't see it. I can bring up terminal windows too.I have a Dell M65 w/ 4GB RAM. I suspect that the problem may be related to the NVIDIA video card; I'm using "version current" of the NVIDIA driver - might uninstalling this fix the problem?
I install on my PC Ubuntu 10.4 and i make al the updates even on my video card I update my video card to the last driver from the NVIDIA official site 195.36.15 My video card is Geforce 8600 GL The big problem is that after the update I have only 2 modes for changing the resolution 320x240 and 680x480 an I relay need biger resolution (1024x786) My xorg.config is :
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder75) Fri Mar 12 01:42:27 PST 2010 Section "ServerLayout"
Ok, so I just finished correcting my driver issue with my wireless card when I'm struck with another problem....after gaining access to the net and updating my packages, ubuntu fails to boot up. It freezes at the boot screen where it runs the 5 orange dots with the ubuntu logo.
I have a netbook, on which I installed the netbook remix. It had ran fine until one day, I shut it down while it was updating. Now, on bootup, it will take me to the login screen and then basically freezes. The keyboard and mouse do not work and I cannot login to any profile. I tried a clean reinstall, but it only finds the preferences I have and sends me right back to the login screen.
I have just "finished" updating my Ubuntu 9.10. (somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).
I install the fc11 from Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso. The software update has just updated my fc11 kernel from 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686.PAE to 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE. If I boot using the new kernel, The screen resolution is not correct (everything gets bigger) and the screen goes into blank white screen suddenly after log in.
I have a geforce 8600gt card and installed its driver (for pae kernel) as suggested on this link: [URL]Everything goes well untill I update the kernel.
I've some problems upgrading to version 10 from version 8. My workstation is certified by RedHat. It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernal.
Every time I update Ubuntu 10.04 or I install new packages, after a while (about 10-15 MB of dowloaded files) the router goes off-line.I have a 3COM ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router and I am connected with a LAN cable (but the same happens when I use the wireless). My laptop is a Dell Studio XPS.I have to restart the router every time, and it works for another 10-15 MB, then it stops again.
I updated my Ubuntu version to 10.04 a couple of days back, and everything seemed to be working fine. Then, I switched off my wireless using the wireless switch. Since then, it does not respond to the wireless switch, i.e. nothing I do turns the wireless on again. I checked "Hardware drivers", and it shows a green circle saying that the Broadcom device is recognised and working. Oddly enough, the I can switch the bluetooth on and off my clicking on the panel and choosing the appropriate option. However, the wireless icon is not visible on the panel. I have also tried switching the wireless off and on from the BIOS, but that too has no effect at all.
I have enabled SNMP monitoring in my debian box (using apt-get install snmp) and configured it to allow my PC to query the server.
I'm able to query the server and get SNMP data but when I get STG to give me a per/second graph of the interface octets, it only updates the data every 12 seconds or so.
Is this a setting in SNMP which could be causing this problem? If so, how can I enable it so that SNMP can give me up to the second octet rates.
I upgraded from F14 to F15 using the DVD. The network worked fine after the upgrade. This morning I updated to the latest RPMs and rebooted, and now the network donot work!ifconfig shows only the lo interface. NetworkManager does not start, /var/log/messages shows signal 11.I tried to boot with the original kernel, but the results are the same.
my Internet connection stopped working suddenly after updating the packages using synaptec package manager and rebooting it..can anyone say me why did this happen.BTW,mine is ubuntu 10.10 and i am absolute new to linux.I had to configure my n/w connections right from the scrap again
After updating to kubuntu 11.04 natty, I have a problem with my internet-connection. The problem happens when I use VoIP-Software like Skype or Twinkle and also when using ktorrent.
When using the mentioned software, after 30-90 seconds the internet gets very slow. In f.e. skype, I can hear the one I phoned very badly.
I use kubuntu on a desktop-PC with a Linksys USB-Wlan-Stick. Detailed information is below.
Code: uname -a Linux pr1-desktop 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I just updated some user account information on my server and when I log on from a client it the ypcat passwd command shows the old info. How do I make it update? A related question... my NIS users can only log in on client machines using the terminal; it doesn't work at the graphical login screen. Is this normal? I'm new to NIS (just set it up last night) and still getting this stuff sorted out.
I do not know how it came to pass, but it has come to pass. I was in the process of updating my desktop Fedora 10 (KDE) system with yum, when I finished that I got a message about
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
Due to networking issues within 10.04, I can't connect to the internet to update to 10.10.
I've created an install CD, but want to confirm if I'm doing it right, or how to fix some issues I'm seeing.
First, I get the option to create besides my other OS (Vista and currently 10.04). I've tried to select this option, and it gives 3 options to install:
An SD card I've left in my computer
Sharing my Vista HD Sharing with 10.04.
The issue is that when I got the computer, I partitioned my second HD (320GB) in half, one that is shared with Vista as a storage dump, the second half Ubuntu (160GB partition).
Currently, using this option forces me to split this half partition between Lucid and Maverick. For some reason, if I try and "use entire partition" the bar shows 2GB as the size of the partition. If I choose use entire HD, it shows the full 320GB. Using the slider can reduce the footprint of Lucid, but can't wipe it out.
Since I haven't screwed around with partitions too much in the last 3 years, I am not too comfortable with using the advanced option, but it seems like the only chance I have to erase 10.04 completely. This is reinforced by it asking about "device for boot loader"
So I have given up on running slackware on my labtop, beacuse I lack the knowledge on many of the settings and configs in linux. So I have decided to install Ubuntu on my labtop. But I know that I have to install 7.10 beacuse of mye graphic card, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. I have allready downloaded the driver install file for my graphic card.
The thing I am wondering on is this : I am thinking on installing the drivers right after I install 7.10 and after that I am thinking of uppgrading to 9.10 if its possible. And the thing is, will I keep my ATI drivers installed if i update?
I have uploaded a newer edition of WINE through a ppa to 'sysyem-admin-software sources', but would like to know how to update wine so that it utilises this ppa upgrade as i cannot get linux to recognise the update.
I recently re-installed Ubuntu Karmic on a new PC (about a month or so ago), and I just noticed that my PPAs are not updating when I run the update manager. I'm not a complete noob but I'm not all that hardcore or experienced. Is there something I am doing wrong?
When adding a PPA I open System>Administration> Software Sources and click on the "other software" tab. After clicking "add" I enter the APT line (*eg. ppa:banshee-team/paa) and hit "add source". I hit close and let it reload and that's it.
This method worked fine for me before but now when I run Update Manager it never shows any updates for the PPAs I have added even though I know there is a newer version of the application available.
Ive just insalled Ubuntu 9.10 and installed Filezilla from the Ubuntu Software Centre, however this is only version 3.2.7.2. How do I update this to 3.3.2? Ive downloaded the tar.bz2 file and extracted it in Downloads but how I do install it from here?
I have installed ntp using Code: apt-get -y install ntp.Logging to /var/log/ntpstats has been enabled in /etc/ntp.conf however this directory is not getting populated with anything. I have also tried removing it with apt-get --purge remove ntp and reinstalling but to no avail.
I was just wondering once the 10.04 LTS is officially released will it be possible to just update the packages of 10.04 beta 2 to make it the official release or will you have to update, or will you have to actually do a reinstall?
