Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Restore VPN Connection
Mar 4, 2010
I am trying to keep a VPN connection open between two Ubuntu 8.04 LTS servers, one in Holland and one in China. Unfortunately, because the connection in China is not great, about 1 time a day the connection drops. I have therefore devised a script, to be started by crontab once every 5 minutes, that checks the connection and if necessary restores it.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
ping -c 2 -W 10 10.10.10.73 &> /dev/null;
PING = $?;

i'm realatively new to linux am just getting my head around the command line, any way my problem today is, my network connection and networkmanger program have been deleted/uninstalled after i did a system update. im running ubuntu 10.04 32 bit. I have run of some commands which should be able to tell you whats going on. at the moment i'm using a live ubuntu cd to gain net access.
so the question is How do i restore my network connection and get my networkmanager program back without a internet connection. (i can download stuff to a memory stick and do manual install) Hope someone can shed some light on this, i know this topic has been covered before although each case seems slightly different to mine.

Sometimes either due to a power outage or due to lightning I turn off my Wimax modem and continue to use my laptop on the battery. Then when I turn the modem back on, there is no internet connection. Here's what I've tried:
1. turn off and on the network connections - right-clicking on the icon on the bar on top of my screen.
2. turn off and on the dsl-provider connection - no effect.
3. When I tried to re-do pppoeconf, it says that there's no response from the concentrator.
This has happened a few times in the past and the only thing I can do to go online again is restart the computer. And it works. Now on Windows, the double-computer icon showing a network indicates connectivity AND data movement. Unfortunately we don't have this on Ubuntu.I'm just after a restart and I'm online now. But I'd like to know if there's a way around this without having to restart.

Recently I have encountered Problems with my Wireless that I have not had before and I cannot fix. So I am asking for help.
6 month old Dell Insperion 1730 Laptop
Dual boot Karmic/Win 7
WUBI install.
No problems till about a week ago.A week ago I upgraded to Lucid and could not get the DVD drive to mount no matter what. The OS saw it but would not mount it...... uninstall and re -install Karmic. As soon as the patches are installed from the update manager, I lose my wireless completely. Wired connection still works.
I have tried different things from here and other sites. Basically I need to know how to enable my wireless card. There is no switch and key combinations (ALT+ F2) don't do anything. Connectivity in Win 7 is fine.
The Applet says wireless is disabled and so does the output from $sudo lshw -C network. It sees the interface but the network is disabled. lsmod shows the driver. iw list scan says does not support scanning. Newtwork is down.I know there is something in the updates that is messing the Intel WiFi Link 5100 up. On a fresh install all works till updated.

We have two internet connections here, one through Allegro which goes through an ISA 2004 box and an ADSL2+ connection.Everything works fine when connected via the ISA box. Windows machines (and last I checked, a Macbook) work fine on the ADSL2 setup, but nothing Ubuntuesque will work properly through it.DHCP is fine (and the same thing happens with a static IP), it gives a proper address, DNS works fine, it's just whenever a page attempts to load, Firefox will sit at the "Waiting for <site>..." status until it gives up. apt does the same thing. What I've tested it on so far is:
- a homemade 9.10 box
- an IBM xSeries 346 running 10.04
- an Acer Veriton M460 running 10.04
- an Acer Travelmate 6293 running 10.04
None of them will work with it. The Travelmate and the IBM are dual-boot, both will work fine on the connection under Windows. The Veriton is Windows only (tested using a Live CD) and is much the same. The router is a Thompson TG782T (Telsta branded). I'm at a loss with this. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed.

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 AMD64 on a HP Pavilion dv4Z-1200 laptop which I had manually assigned a temporary static IP through the DHCP server to the wireless connection, say 92. The server assigns the IP based on MAC.I later reassigned my standard IP to it, 80, but whenever I connect to the network with the Ubuntu wireless connection set to Automatic, it is still picking up 92 (which is outside the range of the DHCP assigning authority, which is 100-120).
I can force 80 manually, but I would rather the DHCP server issue the correct address, rather than tell it which one I want (kind of the whole purpose behind assigning static IPs, no?)I don't know... there is something wrong with this OS installation, because my internet connection is painfully intermittent, to the point of unusability, where other computers on the network are working fine. If I boot the same machine with 9.10 64AMD, the wireless assigned IP is correct and the internet seems to be working fine.

recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything seems to be working fine on the installation except I have never been able to connect to the internet (I'm on mac connected to the same linksys router at the moment). I've been working on this for several days and have exhausted all the possible causes. Here is my setup.
My setup:
-I have tried running both 10.10 and 10.04 (I have 10.04 installed at the moment)
-I have windows xp on a separate hard drive on the same computer and the internet works fine when I boot in windows
-I have tried both automatic DHCP (which my windows uses) and manually connecting to my network under the IPv4 settings
-my "Connection Information" info under networks manager has all the correct information listed as far as my driver, IP address, Bcast, mask, DNS serves are concerned (except I don't know what 'default route' is for so I can't verify that that is correct.)
-my ethernet connection is wired connection that is connected to a linksys router
-my ethernet driver is sis190
-I can ping my router successfully, but I cannot ping anything (i.e. websites) on the other side of my router

So I got Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop working really neat and wanted to upgrade my desktop to 9.10 as well. So I reinstalled Ubuntu there and now I can't connect to my network anymore....
I have a usb wireless adapter (currently Sitecom as I bought a new one today to hopefully fix it, but ended up at exactly the same problem as with my old adapter). The network manager I'm using now is Wicd since some topics I was looking through were about malfunctioning GNOME network-manager (which I removed) and suggested to try this. The GNOME network-manager kept prompting to insert my WEP network key which was a correct one. When I removed all security from the network it didn't prompt anything anymore but just failed to connect. The Wicd network manager is so nice to tell me that it cannot obtain the IP address however, so I suspect that this is my main issue... but I have no idea what I can do about this? Tried using a static IP and then I get the message "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point."
I feel powerless as my knowledge here is just lacking..

I have recently installed ubuntu 9.10. Earlier I had ubuntu 9.04. On that my internet was running perfectly well. After installation I created new connection as I had done for 9.04 version using "Network connections , Edit connections". However, after configuring connection(uname , password etc.) I wasn't able to access Internet. So I tried using "pppoeconf" utility. After using this now whenever I click on network connections applet on top panel , it shows in menu "device not managed".Can somebody point out what went wrong and what to do so as to be able to acess Internet in ubuntu?

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my Lenovo ideapad S10e. Under the network manager it says that firmware is not installed for the wirless card but that is something for a different day. On the ethernet connection it attempts to connect via dhcp and then comes up saying it is disconnected. I attempted to set it as a static connection, when i do that it shows that its connected but I still can not connect to the internet.

when I was still at my university room where the connection would work after a few reboots. After moving back home the connection worked on and off for a day before not working at all. NetworkManager is telling me that I am connected and have an ip address, etc, but nothing is able to get an internet connection. I am able to ping myself but am not able to ping my router. Everything works fine on M$ and other PC's on the network, it's just my ubuntu 10.04 that is playing up.

I have setup an OpenVPN server on Ubuntu server. I am able to connect with Windows clients. I am, however, unable to correctly connect using Ubuntu.
If the router firewall is blocking the pings to keep the connection alive, then the connection initially does not work, but will work after the first timeout and reconnect. If the firewall does not block the pings then the initial connection attempt never times and therefore the connection does not work.
Attached is the readout from the client.
The first attempt gives error ERROR: Linux route add command failed: external program exited with error status: 7
Successive attempts work, they just time out every two minutes.

I just installed suse 11.3 and everything seems to work perfectly out of the box, except for the network card. I am currently using the ath9k driver.
The problem is that if I connect to a WPA protected network, the connection will drop about every 20 seconds and ask for the network key again. Eventually, after about 15 minutes, it completely stops working and I have to reboot in order to be able to use it again. Unloading and reloading the ath9k module has no effect, a full reboot is needed. I have not yet tried to use ath5k or madwifi instead, but on ubuntu, the ath5k and madwifi drivers do not associate with my card.
below is one "cycle" in the nm log, from connected to the next connected:
Code:

I switched to the b43xx (lp-phy) driver, as opposed to the broadcom STA driver which I previously had. I have dell 8312b/g lp-phy(mini) wireless card.
I have the wireless detection, but when I attempt to connect to Fios WiFi it continuously asks for my WEP (I have the correct WEP and I have typed it in correctly) and fails to connect.
I've read about the driver and firmware on linuxwireless and kernel.wireless. org.
http://pastebin.com/w44Xbgw3 (lspci -nnk output)
http://pastebin.com/C5BDhgZ9 (iwconfig output - this printed while trying to access the network)
Why is this happening? How can I fix this?

We had a power-out, which left my Ubuntu box off.
The modem & router is a friend's place, and it was rebooted. Both his boxes (Windows XP and 7) work fine.
but I can't get my box to hook back up. I've tried rebooting, unplugging cable to router from both ends (my box and router), rebooting his modem (Rogers' service) by turning off and on power supply for 3 minutes (as recommended by Rogers).
Once I got the Network-auto to show in the dropdown menu (I have a radio symbol on panel across top), but not again. I tried adding and editing a network connection (both wired and auto) but neither works, and if I boot unconnected they disappear.
The only thing I can get to show is a black box to the right on the desktop that has a red x and says Network Disconnected.
Me and friend are both frustrated as I don't want to interrupt his working use of internet to fix mine.
I have never understood how to connect to internet really, but it seemed to have solved itself in the past.
There is no password on the router, and we are not using wireless (which we never got to work).
The Rogers Modem is a "Motorola Surfboard" (Black).
The router is an Airlink 101 super-g wireless router.
My machine is a p4 motherboard with builtin ethernet socket on back.
My Ubuntu is I think Karmic 9.1

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 64-bit laptop. Before that I used Windows7. In Windows, the internet connection worked perfectly well. But after installing Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the internet. The network-manager applet finally says that "You are disconnected". When I do the "ifconfig", I got no IP address.
So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in the same system. But the problem persists.
I gone through many posts in this forum but nothing was useful.
