Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Access To Some Domains
Oct 30, 2010
Here the problem Ping to [URL]... works ok.
[Code]....
I thought, perhaps from one and one, have public IP blocked, but the funny thing is that from another PC that I have at same room (with Ubuntu 10.04 too) connected to the same internet connection (with the same public IP Address) works perfectly. What else can I check?

I am using openSUSE 11.2 and had the same issue once before in openSUSE 11.1 After some time, two domains I use very often can't be accessed any more, these are: Google and [URL]... (am doing some OO development recently). At the time where I write this post, only these two are "blocked".
When I try to access these two domains using Firefox, w3m or telnet, it tries to open the connection forever. Ping works fine. I tried opening the IP directly in the browser, but same problem, the connection never reaches. I know it's not a router issue, as the other computers can access these domains. Still, I tried to restart the router, but the issue persists. I tried restarting the network service (/etc/init.d/network stop + start), also nscd, without success. The only way I found to make it work again is to reboot. This problem reappears from time to time, after using the computer for a long time, and accessing these domains a lot of times. Note that I also use suspend to disk, so the "blocked" state is kept after resume. Only reboot "cures" it.

I run a few sendmail servers that run MailScanner/Spamassassin/sendmail (current versions) on Centos 5.4 and Centos 4.8 These boxes accept mail for a large number of domains (6000+) scan the mail removing spam and then forward the ham to another server for delivery. I am attempting to stop any backscatter that these servers cause by only accepting mail for specific users@domain or for domains with a catch-all account.I currently use /etc/ mail/ access.db as the access map for the domains, but this allows all mail to be accepted for the domain before the attempting to send it on for final delivery which causes NDR and backscatter for those domains which do not have a catch-all account.
I have looked at adding "To:user@domain RELAY" to the access mapand also adding "define(`_RELAY_FULL_ADDR_', `1') " in the sendmail.mc and running make -C /etc/mail but this has no effect on the sendmail.cf file. My understanding is that if I can get sendmail to accept this undocumented feature then all will be fine as I will be able to use the access map to allow mail to those specific users as well as entries of the type "domain RELAY".My second question is: Does anyone have any ideas on how to utilise access map and relay-domains to achieve the same thing?

I'll post an scenario and hopefully you can help me understand the concept and put me in the right track and do what I intend, if possible. Let's say I have a dedicated server with 2 static IPs each with an associated domain, let's call them www.site1.com and www.site2.com. Now, apache is running on it, I'd like to redirect anyone coming from site1.com to /home/site1/public_html and anyone coming from site2.com to /home/site2/public_html.In short, apache serving 2 entire roots depending on the accessed IP/domain. Whether the sites root are in the same parent folder, such as /home/site/site1_public_html and /home/site/site2_public_html or like above doesn't really matter, as long as it works.Additionally, do something similar with Postfix, so that I can have it running imap/smtp for foobar@site1.com and foobar@site2.com on the same server. At this moment, both apache and postfix are working, and we host only www.site1.com with the respective foobar@site1.com. But I'm not sure how to proceed or even if it's possible to achieve the above solution.

I'm finding that I can not resolve .local domains anywhere except with nslookup and found on the LucidLynx release notes that there is a problem with avahi causing this. Although the avahi service is convenient for locating printers and such can anyone else tell me what other services/options will be impacted on a default installation of Ubuntu if I disable this service?

I have installed ubuntu netbook addition and all is good, but when I try to connect to internet I get comcast(my service provider) site. Which means I am connecting to outside world just need to know what to enter in Search Domains field.
All my pc's/laptops at home have 2 DNS names entered for ipvr4 listed in the field but no Search Domains field value specified and it works great off of wireless router.
Well here when I go to IPvr4 tab it seems like I am required to enter value in search domains field. The question is what do I enter there COMCAST domain? Like this one: hsd1.il.comcast.net?

As of yesterday I have this perculiar problem. When I try to ssh into my account I have on a linux server where I keep some of my files (I'm using Cisco VPN) ssh claims it can't find the address. It's worked fine before, and if I connect using putty in Virtualbox on the same machine it works. The problem applies both to command line ssh and NetBeans (which uses a java client).I've tried setting SSH not to resolve DNS in the config file but it doesn't help.

I have a virtual machine with two network interfaces. Now I wanted that both are part of different domains and tried to configure that with system-config-network. But there I only could change the the domain for the entire system. Is it possbile to edit the Domain for each network interface. If yes how?

I have two virtual hosts that I want to be able to send through one router. I have two seperate dynamic hostnames on dyndns.
Apparently my router allows me to enter two seperate hostnames locally as well: DynDNS Host and Domain Name
Code:
How do I tell the router which is which? Currently I see the same site with both URLs
Do I have to set one vhost to do some 'funky' stuff (black hole in my head when it comes to static routes or BIND? ). And then set the other vhost to host both sites?
I'm running CentOS and an apache webserver. I want to demo a web site 'externally' from two different sub-domains.
I've looked high and low but most examples don't seem to be simply trying to put two different web-sites up to two Dynamic DNS Hosts.
It must be possible, all the pieces are there. I'm just missing the link!

I have a network (192.168.x.x) that I want to keep closed and private for the most part. I need however to get access to some files generated on the machines in this private network. So I first tried putting two cards in a machine running centos 5.2 and connecting one to the private newtork and the other to the public network. This worked somewhat but I was not able to see this bridging machine in the private network because I could not run 2 samba instances on this machine ( I need one for the public network). So I setup xen on a machine with the 2 NIC's and assigned one card to the host dom and the other to the guest dom which was connected to the private network.
This worked ok, but the only issue was the shared disk space. I couldn't use nfs because each machine operates in a different subnet and I don't know how to export a nfs drive across domains. So I created a logical volume on a disk and mounted this in both domains.
Here comes the question now. This works some times,. but at other times I copy files from the private machine to the shared volume but i can't see them from the other domain. Also sometimes the guest domain which houses the private network server hangs during boot up saying that the logical volume has been assigned and cannot be mounted.
1) Is what I'm doing using logical volumes across domains legal (best practise, etc)
2) Is there another way for me to achieve what I want (sharing a disk partition across domains).

Anyone can point me to a document, page, or something that will tell me exactly how to implement DNS step by step. I don't mean just the concept, i.e. you'll need two name servers, and to download BIND, etc. NO, I mean command line commands and all. Step 1, step 2, how to register the name servers, how to resolve different domains, etc.
I'd really appreciate it, as I need to implement internal DNS and external DNS for my company soon. Our set up is pretty standard: Firewall, DMZ, Solaris/Linux/Windows servers, and Windows clients, etc.

At home we have a small home network, but it is very slow. I believe it is, because some computers are placed in a workgroup, called WORKGROUP and others are placed in a domain called TUE. The domain is because many of the laptops at our house also have to work on our university, and I can't simply put them in a workgroup.
The reason why I believe it is slow because of this, is because file sharing between the computers in the workgroup goes with 5 MB/s. File sharing between a domain computer and a workgroup computer goes as fast as 160 KB/s. This is the upload speed of our internet here. How to make the connection with the domain computers the same speed as the workgroup computers? I can not simply put the domain computers out of their domain and in the workgroup (as explained before)
Our network looks as follows:
Internet

/
Modem

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.
------------
After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines. And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

To start off, I realize this type of question is very hard to answer and there is no general rule. My intention is to merely get an understanding of what others are doing. Models: 1) small piece of a big pie, but many small pieces 2) big piece of the pie, but few pieces. Which model do you guys do? If one can make $100 from a site which little or know effert, why not create 100 sites like it? Benits: diversified with multiple revenue streams, hard to manage so many etc etc. OR Work hard on 1 site, focus, narrow the niche and make loads of profits. drawbacks: all eggs in 1 basket Which model do you guys employ?

I've built a web hosting server with ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition at home and it's up and running.how to get and set subdomains. What I mean is that I have a purchased domain [URL] and I want to add as many sub domains as I want such as [URL] so on. And more importantly every single subdomain must belong to each account.
sub domain account name
-------------------------------------------
sub1.example.com john
sub2.example.com steave
sub3.example.com myname
In this case, there are three accounts for ubuntu and each account has a permission to the corresponding sub domain only. p.s My DNS is managed by my domain company and it provides a web page where I can forward(not sure, but there are fields that I can type my sub domains) subdomains and my external IP addresss up to 20(just in case this info matters).

I've tried to set up an old laptop with Ubuntu server - need to use it as a web server for a group of students on a local network only. I managed to get it working fine for just one user publishing webpages etc to a folder called VAR/WWW I could FTP files into the folder and access them again via FTP or a browser. I then decided to create some subaccounts (one for each student) I did this by typnig the following commands:
Sudo usermod -g www-data student1
Sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/student1
Sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www/student1
(In this example student1 is intended to be a subfolder of www and act like a sub-domain with write authority- at least that was my intention) Problem I then get is that if I use Filezilla to access each account I cannot see where to publish the files - wherevever I place them they are not accessible from the browser. Do any of you experts out there know the answer to my problems please.

I would like to set up an ubuntu server to forward outside requests directed to different domains to different computers on my local network. The bind is I only have ONE public IP.
Here's an example of what I want to do.
- if a request is sent to www.first-domain.com, I want to forward it to a local server (say 192.168.0.10)
- if a request is sent to www.second-domain.com, I want to forward it to a local server (say 192.168.0.20)
and so on...
I will need to forward these requests not only for web sites but for other services such as SSH, mail, RDP, VNC, etc etc PS Once it hits those local servers, I know how to use iptables to forward them as desired.
