I've just installed the ubuntu 9.10. I have one problem with it. I have a home net in configuration: Windows XP on a cable, Ubuntu on a cable and Windows on wifi. When I'm surfing on the net on Ubuntu, Wifi isn't work how it should. It's very slow and I don't know what to do with it. Windows XP on a cable is OK, it works good. What happen and how can I repair it?
View 2 RepliesI have a strange problem that I cannot diagnose -- slow wifi. About two or three weeks ago, I noticed that my wifi began to slow down dramatically. The problem is the same on my ubuntu laptop and my ipad. But when I connect directly to the router with a network cable, my connection is fine. So it is definitely a problem with the wifi signal itself.
What I have done so far:
(1) I checked all of the MAC addresses connected to my wifi. I identified my tivo box, laptop, and ipad. Nothing else.
(2) I used [I]wifi analyzer[I] on my android phone and selected an unused wifi channel (channel 8).
(3) I changed the username/password on my wifi signal. I also changed the password for my router's admin privileges.
(4) I restarted my router and computer.
None of this helped.
I am using a Netgear WGR614 wireless router.

I have search the web quite a while about issues with the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card. It seems plenty of people have trouble (or at least have had trouble) with it. I do have a working connection, device seems recognized etc, but it works only at a very low/annoying speed.I'm running Wheezy backports and I have firmware-iwlwifi ver 0.43 installed (from Debian testing).

I'm not sure why modinfo iwlwifi only lists firmware iwlwifi-7260-7.ucude while in dmesg you see iwlwifi-7260-9.ucude loads.
No improvement since I first reported this problem, I am hoping somebody can now advise.
Using openSUSE11.3 Linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-default i686 with kde 4.4.4 release 3.Problem is the wait of sometimes over 2 minutes before the wifi connection is available.Two questions:-
1. Why does it take so long? Longer by far than it to be with previous openSUSE releases. Much longer than with that other OS!!!2. How do I remove the wallet process. Not needed in present environment so I would like direct connection without having to open wallet. I didn't set this up, it just happened after I had upgraded to 11.3 and I need to know how to disable it to save time.
I have 2 connections, wlan and wired, and I'd want to have a few websites (in my browser) to connect through the wireless connection while other go through the wired rj45 connection. s it possible? (without unplugging the rj45 cable...)

View 2 Replies View Relatedi installed Ubuntu 11.04 Amd64 today (and have tried ubuntu 10.10 in the past and had the exact same issue.).I had this problem with the wifi, as it recognizes the adaptor (tplink321g) but it cant connect to the right speed. This is my only problem with ubuntu now.If anybody else is having the same issue, and most of all if anybody has the solution to it.

I have tried the two available networks on my university campus and both of them are very slow with 10.04. I'm not having problems with Windows 7 running on these networks. Although, the wired network works perfectly fine, with normal speeds. I've looked around for help but I could not find anything specific to this problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was introduced to Ubuntu about a year ago and recently decided to come back to using the OS. I now dual boot it with Windows XP Home. My former setup was with Wubi but now I have it installed on an actual partition. (The Wubi install, for whatever reason, had little internet problems.) I use wireless internet, and though my network card was recognized out of the box and can connect to my network, the Internet is very slow. It takes almost a minute to look up Google. Also, Firefox will often report that it cannot find the server for whatever website I try to look up, after trying to connect to it/look it up. I also cannot access the web configuration page for my router. (192.168.1.1). The network app reports that I often have a signal strength of 40% or lower. The following is my hardware/internet:

I am the only Linux computer on my network. (There is no encryption on my network. I know there should be. but my parents are not very computer literate and they are the ones who have access to the network. It is easier just to go without.)
I have tried disabling ipv6, setting custom DNS server names under ipv4, and setting the wlan rate (or something similar) to 1492. Nothing works. This does not seem to be a network problem because my internet works fine in Windows, and I can access the configuration page for my router to change channels, PPP, etc..
I have 1 router 2 pcs. We had to move one pc away from the router so I bought a wifi card. Everything went fine, the card works and I have internet but the network is incredible slow.

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?
I am succesfully installed a Dell wireless card with Broadcom 4328 shipset using ndiswrapper and rpm sources on Fedora 12 2.6.32.14-127.fc12.i686.PAE. Now I am using original Win drivers but the wifi conection is very slow and unstable.
The wifi card runs perfectly on win 7.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic on my desktop machine which is connected to my wireless router (via LAN cable).
I have two laptops on the LAN as well. One is my wife's Windows 7 laptop and the other is my Ubuntu Karmic laptop.
They both connect wirelessly to the LAN and all three computers have static IP addresses assigned.
So here's the issue. The desktop serves the laptops over the LAN with Samba file sharing, SSH, VNC and DAAP.
From the Windows 7 laptop, the connection over the LAN is fine. I generally use it to connect to the Samba shares and occasionally use it for VNCing to my Desktop's....desktop. It is fast and responsive.
From the Ubuntu laptop though, everything seems very slow. Connecting to the samba shares results in a wait of at least 30-60 seconds, even if they have only recently been accessed. Once it has connected (i.e. once the share opens up and you can see files) actually opening the files themselves is delayed too, but not to the same extent.
Also, connecting to the desktop via VNC is intolerably slow, with mouse movements being so delayed that it is almost impossible to click on anything.
SSH takes a long time to connect too (up to 30 secs) but obviously once connected it is fine. In a similar vain, FreeNX connection takes a long time to connect but once the desktop has loaded it is fine too.
I can use FreeNX instead of VNC but actually like using both for different functions. I understand VNC is slower than FreeNX but over a 100Mbps LAN connection I wouldn't expect it to be slow at all.
This laptop used to be a Windows Vista/Win7 laptop prior to being replaced with Ubuntu and it was able to connect to the server with no speed problems.
Since I've updated from 9.10 to 10.04, I'm having some difficulties to use the internet. Even though I can connect to my home wireless network, the connection is really slow. I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545, and here comes the configuration:

Apart from that, I must say that Ubuntu 10.04 is fantastic. Easy to use, elegantly designed and working perfectly on my PC
Lately I have been using my window's partition due to the fact that 10.04 drops my wireless signal every 5-10 minutes, but today I downloaded the new updates and that seems to have fix the issue with the dropping of the wireless connection. Now the only problem is the internet is so slow when trying to go to webpages it times out. I have opened up firefox gone to about:config and changed the necessary lines, but still dreadfully slow.

If I turn the laptop on with the wireless active, it keeps flickering between on and off states, and gives me a really slow connection.It happened in 10.04 if I booted with the wireless activated, but could be fixed by resetting the wireless. View 9 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a dell laptop. My WiFi connection that I've been using on the same computer for years is not working when I log on. However if I run the burnt image cd and choose the option "Use Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer" I am asked if I want install proprietary drivers. If I activate one "Broadcom STA" I can connect to the wireless connection in my house. When I am using the version installed on my laptop it doesn't ask me if I want to install the drivers and it doesn't even find them when I go to hardware drivers under system. So to sum it up I can get connection when I run Ubuntu from the cd but not when I run the Ubuntu on my laptop.

I got a 64bit version of Kubuntu 10.04, up to date, installed on both, my workstation(ventury) and my notebook (defiant).the question is: Do I always have to ping my notebook first if I want to ssh from it to my workstation or is there some other solution? And why does it work fine with cable, but not with WiFi?
I just removed ubuntu-desktop in favor of kubuntu-desktop. Now I can't create an ad-hoc wifi connection however hard I tried from network-manager. It simply is not visible to other PCs. And when some connection is created on another ubuntu PC, I can't connect to it.. I switched NM off and tried the CLI way.

I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and Linux in general, and honestly don't know what I am doing. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my external hard drive and am able to boot fine (other than an issue with my monitor falling asleep because my graphics card needs a different driver. I have a work around for this that i'm currently using but I would like to fix it permanently and thus need an internet connection.)
When trying to connect to the network in my home, I am unable to. I click on the WiFi symbol in the top right corner, and I can see my network. I then click it and a page comes up asking for the key. I put it in but it doesn't sync and usually after a minute or so it pops back up asking for the key again.What can I do to gain internet access? I'm unable to connect my computer via a hard wire Ethernet cord and need to sort out this WiFi issue.
I bought my MacBook Pro at the beginning of the school year when I went to college. I am now living in a dorm where I do not have access to wired internet connection, so I cannot just plug my computer in to download stuff. If need be I can of course borrow someone else's computer to download something and then just transfer it over with a flash drive.
Anyway, I have a virtually new MacBook Pro that I bought in August. Using refit I have dual-booted OS X and Ubuntu (obviously I am posting this from within OS X) but I cannot manage to get connected wirelessly to the internet. I have tried this many many times with many many distros and have never once been able to connect. I understand that there are various tutorials around but none of them seem to help me at all and I really want this to work. I've been looking around and trying things for about two days now. Can someone give me step by step instructions (or point me toward some simple ones) starting, if need be, from a fresh install as to how to get wifi working on my macbook pro? I am also completely willing to switch versions of Ubuntu if that would help.

I have a linux server that has seemingly random network slow downs. This server is mainly my dvr. I'm starting to think it's a hardware problem, but that's just a gut feeling. I don't really know how to determine if it isn't.
Slow summary:SSH, HTTP, VNC incoming traffic are all affected
Outgoing traffic seems ok. I haven't tested this as much.
Rebooting mostly helps.
Stopping/starting network doesn't help

I use Slackware 12.1 and I have a big problem that I can't solve by myself. I'm connecting to a LAN where there are almost 20 PC connected, all with static IP.

It takes a lot of time connecting to a internet web site! It's really strange because downloading a file the transferring rate is good, it takes some time starting, but it works normally. I wait almost 7 seconds after seeing a web site. All the others PC's (windows xp) can connect perfectly to network using static and DHCP. Trying with another wire in another room I've got the same result. My /etc/resolve.conf is configured with the IPs specified upper in this page.
I set up my linux router as a simple NAT router. I use CentOS 5.4. When I set up ISP proxy IP in the browser of client PC, Internet access is fast. When I remove ISP proxy IP from the browser, Internet access is slow.
ISP use transparent caching but I can use manual caching as well. Clients on my network with transparent caching get slow internet access and using ISP proxy get fast internet access.
ISP announce that we can use transparent caching or manual caching.
So, I set up my linux router with squid. I set up cache_peer TAG point to ISP's proxy IP. But the problem is the same. Using my squid proxy is slow and using ISP proxy directly is fast. All other network settings are correct.
How can I improve my internet connection using transparent caching. I don't want to set up proxy IP address on all clients.
I recently installed ubuntu on my laptop and the wifi is horrible. The connection was very slow and dropped every 5 minutes or so. I have tried enabling the proprietary madwifi drivers - however then it wouldn't connect at all.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?
I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.
I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).
