I am a moderately skilled windows user with some dos knowledge that has just transitioned my PCs over to Ubuntu. this is the first time I have had ANY exposure to Unix/Linux. I am looking for some literature or video tutorials that will help me transition to Ubuntu. The basic functions are so similar to windows and mac OS X that I am moving easily around the desktop, but I want to go deeper. I want a little history of how we got from Unix to Ubuntu but quite honestly I don't know what I can do with what I have.
I plan to design a general framework for structural optimization.I already have a pre-processor module that I can call in batch mode, a Finite Elements Solver, and a heuristic non gradient based optimizer that can process the outputs of the solver, so as to adjust some input variables in the pre-processing phase ( geometry and topological definitions of my structure ).
I would like to parse the huge ammout of data that is released by the solver ( an ascii text file) to filter out some reauired results in some specific points ( maximum allowable deflections or stresses within my structure ) since it is this infoemation that will be fed to the optimizer engine so as to feedback on the quality of the changes made in the topological definition. The only way to do this in batch mode is with awk, or with sed..
I am interested in working with zfs fs's and I am looking for tutorials on the subject, I am working with the Centos distro, can you send some links my way.

Is a good tool for developing C++? - I use KDE. A tutorial for developing a KDE application? - Where to get more help: forum, chat.
I'm currently looking at a Mac Terminal tutorial:[URL]... I want to learn about Linux Terminal, is there a difference between the Mac Terminal and Linux Terminal commands and Internet tutorials?
I am familiar with C, C++, and Python at a novice level. I have recently tried learning bash, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. My biggest problem, I think, is the huge "vocabulary"-- it seems like there are thousands of commonly used commands, and several ways to use said commands.I've done some google searches but can't seem to find scripting tutorials that tailor to n00bs. Most go from basic "Hello World" programs to very complex scripts.
I want to learn Java programing language and MySQL in linux. What packages do I've to install? Are there any sites providing basic tutorials of java and MySQL?

I have network with Kubuntu server with 5 pcs all of them are using windows XP. The network is already designed for sharing files and folders. I have to create a new user and a share folder, also given permission to that user to access this folder. Now when I try to map it gives following error "The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share"
i have a dual boot set up on my laptop using wubi, but now i can't log on to my windows side, it gives me an error message saying that it can't load the user profile. how do i fix this without using system restore?
I am currently running a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 and winders vista ( go Mohave! Yes, just go! :P ). Anyway, windoze has outlived its usefulness to me, I never use it anymore. I am wanting to replace losedows with a clean install of Kubuntu. I am using Gnome and I love KDE too - after +20yrs of m$ they are both a delight to use. But they do seem to have some compatibility issues when the environments are set up on the same install concurrently. I tried it for a week, it didn't work out very well. (Pulse Audio causes problems with KDE,
So here is what I'm trying to do: I want to share a folder and have it so that guests can access it, but only read. I also want to make it possible that I can mount it as a network drive on my Windows 7 machine and login with my linux account so that I can have write access. This is from a completely stock Ubuntu 8.10 and Samba config. Everytime I've tried I've failed to get it working.
I have a Samba installed and configured on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 box, as a file server, not as an PDC. And I have several Windows 7 machines accessing the Ubuntu Server to store files.
I would like to let users to change their passwords from windows.
I am currently attempting to setup Samba 3 (installed) for a basic home-network file-sharing server via Ubuntu 10.04. It seems like (based on my extensive googling and research) nobody wants or has a configuration like I do, but surely SOMEBODY knows how to do this.
The following is my goal for a basic setup.
Folder 1 (share is called "Read-Write"):
-Users from Windows 7 can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.
-Users can accomplish all of this from as "guest."
Folder 2 (share is called "Read-Only"):
-I can log in as my user to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 2 as I so desire.
-People other than me can log in as "guest."
-"Guest" users from Windows 7 can see, read, and execute programs as desired.
Things I have accomplished:
-Directories exist
-Directories are browseable via Windows 7
-My user has a password for Samba (assigned via "sudo smbpasswd -a matthew)
Things I have not yet been able to accomplish:
-Configure Folder 2 so that Samba asks for login credentials when someone tries to access it SO THAT I an use my Samba user to log in.
-Configure Folder 2 so that, when I log in as my Samba user, I can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as I so desire.
-Configure Folder 2 so that Windows 7 users can easily access it as guest to browse, read, and execute files and folders in it.
-Configure Folder 1 so that any Windows 7 user can easily access it as guest to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.
I have tried using Linux several times but to be truthful it just seemed to be so complicated when compared to windows OS's That it just never really appealed. The one thing That really annoys me about Linux is that Widows makes it so easy to connect to the internet and even if you run into a problem nearly every Provider offers support for Win users.
My provider BigPond (Australia) Solves all Win OS problems with just a simple phone call, but when I say LInux " Sorry We don't support that system." is the reply. So! My cable modem is supplied by BigPond but when I try to log in using Ubuntu 10.4 : Nothing works. Linux just can't recognise the hardware and no one seems to be able to tell me how you you link Ubuntu to your normal Internet hardware.
Why is it so difficult for Linux users to do what is just a breeze for Windows users. Until Linux can match Microsoft in user friendly competition, it will always run a dismal Last to Windows in any form and Win 7 is just such an easy to use service. So is there anyone out there who can tell me how I get Ubuntu to recognize my Modem and at least get me started?
I just installed virtualbox and installed windows xp on it. I need windows xp for compiling my Lazarus (Free Pascal Compiler) projects in it, so that something I program on ubuntu works on Windows too. Windows works correctly on the virtual machine, there is just one problem. How do i copy a file from ubuntu(for example from/home/user/downloads) into the C drive of windows(Windows is installed on the virtual machine)

I have a dual boot system with OpenSUSE 11.3 and Windows XP. I would like to have OpenSUSE mount the windows drives (C,D,E) only when one particular user logs in, and not be accessible for the other users. I have tried playing with the fstab options (do not mount at startup + user can mount, creating a new user group 'mounters' and replacing the 'users' in th the fstab line with 'mounters' etc.) but this is not doing what I want.
How do you configure a Windows (preferably latest version) machine for a Linux power user, so that s/he can get most out of it?if all you have to add is a one-liner, your answer will be converted to a comment.
Long story short, someone repaired my brother's computer and set a password on his account, now we can't get in and can't contact the person who set the password. Is it possible to create a Windows XP user if I have access to the windows partition, from a linux partition or pendrive, for example TinyCore?
