I installed 11.04 on a t420 Thinkpad, and sometimes it suspends normally, but sometimes it cuts to a black screen with white text (attached) and won't finish suspending, making me do a hard reboot.
I tried to fix it by using s2ram, but that did not solve my problem.
I've been unable to resolve this problem for the past weeks and have come as far as I can trying to fix it on my own. I have a fresh install of 11.04 on a Shuttle ST20G5 with a Radeon Xpress 200g chipset. After 5-10 minutes of usage in X, it freezes solid (no response to alt-sysreq) and displays a white screen (sometimes with a pattern). I believe it's a kernel issue.
Things I've tried but still resulted in crashes:
- Switching to VESA graphics
- Running failsafe / Recovery Console X
- Downgrading X server to 2.09
- Running latest X server via ppa (at least, I think I did this. Maybe I didn't)
- Upgrading kernel to 2.6.39-0 via ppa
- Running the live cd
I get no warnings or errors of note in xsession-errors or kern.log
I have not been able to catch the error or obtain any troubleshooting info. When it crashes, it just crashes.
I have a laptop Toshiba a65 s-1067 and i just installed ubuntu 10.04 but after updating the files that update manager said i restarted the laptop but now its not booting the gui it just shows a black screen with text going then it apears the logo of ubuntu in dark red backround with some text that i cant read cuz it disapears fast.. after this the screen just goes blan (dark red) and presing ctrl + alt F1 or F8 or anything doesnt work generaly no key works.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to get rid of ubuntu splash screen, and edited the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text". Now it won't load at all. It nust shows the same purple background without ubuntu logo, then turns black and shows few lines of text. After displaying "Checking battery state... [OK]", it freezes and does not move further. I can't even.start a recovery mode because I have no dual boot and do not get this opfion at the start.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.
I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. I burnt the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to CD and installed on a freshly nuked Dell 2350. It is pentium 4 at 1.8 MHZ with 512 RAM. Just a spare machine I have sitting there. Install went fine, restarted box, boot from hard drive. I get the little white Ubuntu symbol on a black screen and then a black screen with un-occupied white tool bars at top and bottom of screen and a functional mouse pointer, then nothing. It freezes there.
If I restart by holding the power switch in it occasionally shows multiple CPU overtemp messages and freezes with totally black screen. I can run the CD live and everything works like a champ. I'm going to like Ubuntu once I have this sorted out. If I boot from CD and choose the run from first hard drive option, everything loads and works fine. I was able to remove CD, update and save preferences, etc..
On one occasion, I was able to restart and boot from hard drive and it worked fine but usually it freezes at previously mentioned black screen with white bars top and bottom with mouse pointer. Please excuse my ignorance as I have very little knowledge of the inside workings of computers. I didn't even know about burning ISO's or changing boot orders until reading online. For what it's worth, the computer worked fine with no known hardware problems when it was running XP. It also is completely stock with no mods or added/replaced hardware.
I'm using x86_64 F12 on my dell inspiron 1440 laptop. My machine frequently freezes especially after suspending. Today, when I disabled the wireless connection, the machined freeze.

There is nothing in the logs indicating a problem and it is not the graphics card, as I cannot ssh in from another machine. It sometimes happens after three days of running and sometimes after 20 hours.

I'm running a generic kernel with Slackware64 13.37 multilib. Every now and then it freezes at the boot time. It probably happens 1 every 5-7 times, so it's not a big problem, but it indicates that something is not right.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my computer running debian testing with kde. When after a while I'm away form keyboard my screen turn off for power saving, but I cannot in any way turn it on again.
I tried moving mouse, pressing some key, Ctrl + Alt + Del, Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace, Ctrl + Alt + Esc, and also Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/ecc.. No way. I had to reset my computer every time.
I can't suspend my laptop because after suspending the system and pressing the power button I only get a black screen. As Debian wiki suggests, if CapsLock LED works the system is still running, which is not my case. I don't know why the system doesn't get back control.
No matter if I press Fn+Sleep keys, go to the Xfce menu, or type:

It's tough to debug since I need to restart the laptop everytime I try.
When I run a java application (minecraft) the computer occasionally freezes. I'm not sure which version of Java I have. The online java app for telling you which version I have says that I have an old version. The command line says I have an up to date version. If I need to update Java Sun , how do I do it ? I followed the instructions once and didn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having trouble with rendering issues in Gnome for the past few weeks, running Sid on x86_64, Occasionally Blue and Grey horizontal bars show up, they go away partially if I scroll up or down, and the bars disappear completely if the window is resized. Select characters/letters will also occasionally become garbled, if I change the font in Gnome Tweak Tool it seems to temporarily fix the issue though.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen Ambiance is selected as the theme, the broadcast box in the "Me Menu" is black text on a near black background. Changing the "Input Boxes" color changed the color of that boxes background on every theme except Ambiance. The problem seems to be with having "Controls" set to Ambiance, because having any other theme customized with Ambiance controls selected causes this bug again.
I really don't want to use any of the other themes because I find them horrid in comparison. how to fix this bug, or if someone would be kind enough to post a proper bug report for this? Can anyone else recreate this error on theirs?
Since install ubuntu 11.04 natty narwal (unity) i have had issues when leaving my computer for about 10-15 sometimes longer and returning to a frozen screensaver and ubuntu doesn't repond.Lately i have just enabled the screensaver to go on after 5 hours but this is bad for my screen.I am wondering if there is a fix for this i have updated today and still encountering the issue. And is this bug reported?

The problem is, in the last couple of days this has happened quite a few times, which shows that something is wrong.

My system is an ASUS moderboard with an AMD chipset. The solution came when I entered the BIOS and disabled the cool&quiet feature for the chipset.
After installation, I have to keep cool&quiet disabled in order to run ubuntu. Re-enabling cool&quiet results in ramdon restarts or freezing

I used to edit grub from /etc/default/grub and change line.But after doing that now in Natty I still get a graphical boot, the Ubuntu logo just doesn't show anymore, but it isn't a text boot. Anyone know how to get this to work?

This can be restored by highlighting the text - and sometimes it will self-restore given time, but the corruption will reappear if the text is scrolled again.
The behaviour does not happen in program-generated windows, such as Firefox.

I have a Logitech Quickcam Chat webcam (USB ID 046d:092c) that's worked with my Ubuntu with minimal problems (just some nVidia driver crap) for ages now. I'm not using nVidia anymore (Intel now), but since my fresh install of Lucid, my webcam doesn't seem to capture anything. It is detected by lsusb, but when I open Cheese, the picture is just black. Skype doesn't give me any video at all, not even that annoying static or green lines. Clicking the Test button in my Skype Options undedoesn't do anything;double-clicking it gives me a full-screen grey screen - pressing Escape takes me back to the preferences window. After I get the grey full screen and press Escape, the Test button is gone until I close the Options window and open it up again.Going into gstreamer-properties and testing v4l2 (under Video -> Default Input) just shows me the 'Testing ... Click Ok to finish' window for ages until I close it - no video appears or anything and I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be seeing. Testing with the 'Test Input' option does give me the coloured lines and static. Testing v4l seems to make it crash, but no error comes up in the terminal I'm running it from.lsusb output:

I tried booting up natty server on both a unetbootem usb flash drive install and on CD. I get the menu of options to install like Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Server 9 expert install, Cloud, etc. Hitting install either the 1st or 2nd option leads to a black screen but not at a frozen state(I can still reboot with ctrl-alt-del). The server Im installing on is a ibm system-x rack with a single xeon and a raid5 already setup to be used for installation. Now Im back to using lucid 10.04.2 which I might consider upgrading through Update Manager since I cant get natty to boot correctly with a working display. Anyone having similar problems on Natty server stable release?Also as I post this, I dont see a ubuntu server prefix, maybe it should be added?

So, generally speaking the stability I am experiencing with Natty is as I expect; I'm fully aware that this is a very very early development release and so all sorts of things can go wrong. I just wanted to point that out So while Gnome/Unity are up and running, graphics run more or less perfectly, the boot process text is completely garbled and if after everything is fully loaded I hit Control+Alt+F1-F6 the text looks like:

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 64 bit. Sometimes boot fails and I get a black screen. It starts quite normal, but when it tries to start X and KDE, it fails and I only see a black screen. I can't switch to terminal and I can not reboot my computer by pressing "Ctrl + Alt + Del". It doesn't even shutdown by pressing the power-button. The only possibility is to switch off the computer. Then it normally starts.
The problem also occures with a clean installation of OpenSuse. And it cannot be solved by updating kernel, X-Server and KDE.
What files do you need? I'll post them.
The same computer worked fine with OpenSUSE 11.1. I think, the new radeon driver could be the problem, I have to use it because I can not use fglrx anymore as with 11.1
I take a look into my log-files, but I cannot see any error. Sometimes it seems, that /var/log/messages is partly overwritten by restarting the machine.

I have a Macbook 5,2, on which I'm triple booting OS X - Linux - Windows, using bootcamp and rEFIt.I had a variation of Ubuntu 10.04 called Uber Student as the linux installation.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 instead, by choosing the EFI boot option.Now this gave me some problems. When I shot down, the Macbook gives me a troubling long beep sound.When I start up, I'm still able to boot up into rEFIt and Grub2, but there is a big delay with the screen being black for about 30 seconds and the little white light in the left corner of the Macbook is blinking feverishly. I read something about a guy which had a similar problem and the process seemed to mess up the firmware on his Macbook, so he had to have his MB changed.
