Ubuntu :: Wine App Seeing Ntfs Drive?

I've got a mapping app (Memory Map) + 25Gigs of maps on an NTFS drive on this computer. When I try to find maps it throws up the windows dialogs showing me whatever drives wine has configured eg
c: (something that Wine has invented and looks like a windows install)
d: (dvd drive)
z: this is the root of the linux drive
I dont know the linux file system very well I thought NTFS drives would appear under dev or mnt I have to use the gui to mount the NTFS drive each time (grrrr...) though I have installed NTFSConfig after some slight research that I thought would do the job for me a boot time.
Is this an issue with Wine, do I need to search through the Z: path until I find the NTFS file system, do I need to add a line to the mount script etc etc

Just installed 11.3 on my computer, however when I connect an external NTFS harddisk I receive an error message. When I open dolphin to connect to an internal NTFS partition I receive the message:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: org. freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed auth_admin_keep_always <--
Anyone having an idea how I can fix this?

Trying to mount my NTFS file system (portable hard drive) so that is can be recognized by a program I have installed in wine (seagate manager). I've tried to change the mount point for the drive to /home/.wine/c_drive but that doesn't seem to do the trick, and messing around with the fstab file just results in error messages when I try to mount/unmount the drive.
who to change the mount point properly? /dev/sbd1 is my partition.
Either that or does anyone know how to configure wine so that it will find my drive? I've tried adding an e: drive to the drives tab and mapped it to mediaSimons' Seagate (partition label), but that doesn't seem to do the trick either.

How it works in Windows.
I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.

We have a VMware box that is connected to a Thecus. The Thecus FTPS the WMware virtual machines onto a PC which has a 2TB drive.
We are trying to see if we can get the FTP'd VMware Virtual machines to run on another WMware node.
However Vmware use's NFS so we can't mount the drive as it's NTFS.
We are attempting to mount the NTFS drive in ubuntu. Can this be done and can it be turned into a NFS share without formatting the drive.

I have an external USB drive that I want to format but I can't find a Linux utility to do this. I would also like to quickly and easily format USB zip drives too. The ability to format in FAT, NTFS or EXT? would be good as well. GParted seems like overkill.

I just tried mounting my Iomega 1tb hard external hard drive, but it doesn't seem to work. The drive doesn't show up in nautilus. When I look at it with parted it shows as a ms-dos filesystem. If I plug it into my imac, it shows doesn't mount either, but in the driveutility it shows up as a fat32.Windows 7 doesn't seem to helpfull as it just says that the drive needs to be formatted.Is there any way to recover my files before I format, or better yet solve this problem without formatting?

I have a ntfs-partition that I will use for documents for me and another user. I works fine for me.
The partition is mounted and I can read/write.
However, for the other user the partition is not showing up. What to do?
I've tried changing the permissions from nautilus, but no success.

So I currently have OSX and Windows 7 install on my hardrive - I would like to add 10.04 in the mix, however it will not let me resize my Windows partition because it does not recognize it as ntfs. It will not let me mount it via cli or gui and gparted will only offer to remove the partition - not resize.

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdc1 is already mounted on / mount failed. Not sure what happened but it worked fine till last reboot. It's a 250g NTFS drive named MEDIA device /dev/sda1. why it won't mount now.

I'm attempting to set a label for my Windows partition, but it seems risky. Here's a picture of GParted before I attempt to set a label w/ the drive unmounted (wont let me change label when mounted):
After I set a label, the image goes empty as if it will format if I click 'Apply': My question, is it safe to hit apply or will it wipe my drive, and if so, why? In Windows I can just set a label even with the drive mounted.

I used Wubi to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop alongside Windows 7. I need to access my windows harddrive, however, so I used NTFS Configuration Tool to mount the drive. However, whenever I reboot, it fails to mount and I actually have to go back into NTFS Config Tool, delete the old mount, and remount it. This is tedious. My /etc/fbstab file looks as follows:

I have a Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 500gb external hard drive that I'd like to partition and install another OS on. It is currently NTFS formatted, and has around 80 gb of data that I don't want to wipe. In GParted, there's a next to the partition name, and when I select "Resize/Move partition", the dialog box pops up but doesn't let me make any changes. When I view "Information" on the volume, I see the errors shown in the attached screen cap. When I select "Check", it starts to check the disk and shows an error, but before I can see what it is, the computer becomes unuseably slow and I have to reboot. In Disk Utility, it says the drive is healthy, and passes all tests.

I am attempting to put vista onto my laptop from a Full install of Ubuntu 10.10, but when I boot from my vista CD and attempt the instalation it says I have to have my drive formated to NTFS, I have tried to google how to get this done.ied to go to ystem>Administration>Disk Utility and then edit the type of the partition but there are like 20 options and none of which are just NTFS. what should I do?

I can no longer access my external USB hard drive after applying routine updates this morning. It is a WD "My Passport" drive, 500 GB with the standard formatting setup. As far as I can tell there are no errors on it. Upon plugging it in I see a pop-up box "Unable to mount the volume 'My Passport'" and it provides no further information under "Details." If I try mounting from the command line, e.g. mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 or similar, no errors appear but when I do ls on the directory it comes up blank. Also then if I try to unmount it, it tells me the drive isn't mounted. This drive mounts fine on another computer running Fedora (and all the data on it is readable). I'm guessing there is a bug in one of the updates--here is what updates I applied.

I recently updated to Kernel 2.6.32.7 available from the: Mainline. The reason I have done this is because it corrects an error that prevents my web-cam from functioning (Microsoft VX-3000). So, with this kernel I have a functioning web-cam *but* I have noticed now that my USB Hard Drive intermittently now unmounts. I am unable to remount the device without rebooting Ubuntu. The drive was mounting dirty but installing NTFSProgs and running NTFSfix was the solution for that. I have disabled power management completely on my machine by editing /etc/default/acpi-support and changing SUSPEND_METHODS to "none" and both ACPI_SLEEP and ACPI_HIBERNATE to false. This seems to have made the USB hard drive take longer before it unmounts but it does still unmount. Also as a GRUB2 boot option I have tried acpi=off but this also disabled my usb keyboard and mouse and my BIOS isn't flexible enough to work around that so I cannot use that option. With these things in mind are there any other avenues I could pursue and things I could try?
Edit: It may not be "unmounting" it just disappears. Also, I could try to whitelist the USB controller in /etc/default/acpi-support if I knew how to find out what it was called but I do not know how to do that.. Yet !
Edit2: I moved the physical plug to another slot where it connects on the computer. If this disconnects again I'll swap out the cable. If it disconnects again.. I'll go buy a huge 1TB internal sATA and call it a day. ~

I have an external drive which is parted into two partitions:
1) ext4, with filesystem ext4 which I use for backup
2) NTFS with filesystem NTFS
Since I re-installed jaunty the NTFS partition is owned by root. Whatever I do to make it change, it doesn't work. I used:
sudo chown jan:jan NTFS
sudo chown -R jan:jan NTFS
Still it says the owner is root and also the group is root. What else do I need to do to make me owner of this partition? The fileproperties say: drwxrwxrwx Still the partition is read only for me. In ntfs-config it says: "Enable write support for external drive"

I'm using an external hard drive formatted to NTFS to keep my projects on. I edit projects from both Ubuntu and Windows XP.
After editing some files in a couple of folders on the drive I have now noticed that any Ubuntu machine I plug the drive into can see the entire contents of the drive, but now, I have 4 folders that do not appear in Windows XP. I have plugged the drive backwards and forwards between three machines now (one of them dual boot) and Ubuntu definitely finds the folders and Windows definitely doesn't. This has only happened one Ubuntu has edited files, though some of the files and folders that have been edited are still visible in XP.
I presume something went wrong whilst writing file tables or whatever they are called these days. Does anybody know how I can get the folders visible in XP again? Do I need to run something in Ubuntu or in XP to 'rescan' the drive?

The issue I am having is that Virtual Box does not recognize my USB drives. I understand that it is related to the fact that Ubuntu cannot recognize the permissions on the USB NTFS drive. So how do I mount the ntfs drive and gain full permissions?
One post suggested that I have to join my user to the 'vbuser' group in users and groups to fix this in 9.04, but I do not have a "vbuser" group in my list of groups. I am running 10.04.

I managed to install samba and it's GUI. I tried to share a directory within the pictures folder (at home/mark/pictures/share) just as a test. I had everything set up right, but it was inaccessible from a windows XP machine on my network. After some digging I found the problem lay with the permissions of it's parent folder. I right clicked on the parent folder then clicked properties, then clicked on the permissions tab. I changed the permissions for others and it's working fine.
I'm having the same problem now but with a share on a NTFS drive called storage. I cannot change the permissions for the shared folder or any of it's parents by right clicking. Any changes I make revert immediately back to their previous setting. Is there any way to change the permissions to allow read access to everyone?

I was running 1 HDD with 2 partitions 1 for win 7 and other for files ect, i installed ubuntu today over the win7 partition and now i cant access my backed up files on the second partition but for some reason it became a swap drive for ubuntu does anyone one know how to save the partition ?

I've been working for a while to help a friend re-activate her system after a Windows crash. I tried every way I could to restore Windows, but the system is thoroughly bollixed. The data is still there on the disk, and you can read/write if you boot off of external media. I backed up her data that way.
Details if you need them, but for now suffice it to say that I finally got her up and running by installing Xubuntu Lucid in a dual-boot setup. However Xubuntu isn't automatically recognizing and mounting the NTFS partition the way I would expect it to. I had her run a few commands in the terminal, and here's what she got.

Ordinarily I'd use mkdir then mount to solve this. But I'd like to check a few things before I go and do that.
First, as I understand it if a Windows instance is not shut down properly it can make it difficult for Linux to mount the partition. The usual solution is simply to reboot Windows and then shut down properly, but that's impossible in this case. Will that affect the mkdir/mount solution?
Second, the fact that /dev/sda1 doesn't even show up in fstab causes me some concern. Would that be a problem for mkdir/mount?
And third, how to I set it up so the NTFS partition mounts automatically?

I have been trying to use fstab, writing a script in /etc/init.d to mount my external ntfs usb drive. I have had absolutely no luck and I have tried just about every solution I could find on the web except for writing a udev rule which I have never done so I am not exactly sure how.
My solution for the interim is to put the mount command in the rc.local file. That works, but I don't understand why I can use fstab to mount it. Putting it in the fstab gives me errors like "unknown file system" or just "An error occurred during mounting of drive" and then the booting stops. I tried using both ntfs and ntfs-3g.

Some time ago I reformatted my hard drive to just run Ubuntu. Now I need to install Windows XP but when I put in the install disk it says it can't find a hard drive. I'm guessing this is because the hard drive is formatted to a Linux-specific ext4/extended/linux-swap set-up. The ext4 partition is 71GB and only uses 13GB. I have 57GB free. I can see all this in Gparted but how do I now split that ext4 up and free some space for ntfs partition for Windows? Indeed is this what I should be doing? Obviously I can't unmount the ext4 bit whilst in Ubuntu.
Ultimately I want to do a complete reformat of the hard disk and just install Windows XP for the time being (I'm handing the laptop in for a hardware service).

I've been searching for a way to do this with no luck. I've got a 1TB external hard drive I used to share over the network from my Windows desktop -- which is now a Ubuntu desktop.I've tried setting it up as a samba share, and the closest I've gotten is mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory. I've tried the suggestions (editing /etc/security/limits.conf), and that removed the warning I got from testparms but didn't fix the mounting on my mythtv box.

I finally have my ubuntu up and running. I have a USB-drive which is often connected to my Ubuntu-machine. I want to share this via Samba but I can't set the user-rights. If I try to acces the file (via windows machine) I can see the directory but if I open it it gives me: \Computermediadirectory is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. I tried setting the rights but it just 'changes back immediately'. I found some posts about not being able to set rights via ubuntu on a ntfs disk. If I mount it via fstab it will give an error when the USB-drive is not connected. So that's no option. Is there a way to share this drive via my Samba server? I did get access to a partition on my linux-machine, to I assume my samba-settings are correct.
