Ubuntu :: Multimonitor: Win + P Shortcut Like In Windows 7?
Jun 10, 2010
I like a lot the keyboard shortcuts that are available in Windows 7 for managing windows across multiple screens and would like to replicate them in ubuntu. So far I created shortcuts for moving windows from one screen to another.
WinKey + Left: Move active window to the left screen
wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,0,-1,-1,-1
WinKey + Right: Move active window to the right screen
wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,1280,-1,-1,-1
Now when you press WinKey+P in Win7 you get a nice menu where you can select if you want only monitor1, monitor2 or both. I would like to at least create shortcuts to switch between these modes. For example bind WinKey+1 to turn only monitor1 on, WinKey+2 for m2 and something else to have both monitors on.
I have an Acer Aspire 5532 running the latest Ubuntu. I'm trying to set up dual monitors, the laptops screen and an HP 2311x connected via VGA. I installed Ubuntu and was able to set it up just fine, however when I installed the proprietary video drivers from AMD and restart, it forgot my settings and even the name of the monitor, which it detected automatically before the drivers were installed. I tried to set up my HP monitor with the correct resolution, but no mater how I do it, it says it can't because it would exceed the maximum virtual screen size, is there a way to change this or a workaround?
I have a laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity The graphics card has an HDMI output that I want to use with a second monitor, but when an HDMI output is connected there is no detection what soever. I think I need to install additional drivers to support Xrandr output when 2nd monitor through HDMI is connected:
Installed Gnome 3 on my OpenSuse 11.4 KDE laptop. Got two monitors, the built in monitor and the external. Under KDE the second monitor works fine, shows up as VGA1 and can be configured to work as an extended monitor, etc. Under the new Gnome 3 install the monitor shows up in the settings dialog but the monitor itself always says 'no signal' regardless of the configuration I use.
Hardware:
Lenovo R500 running OpenSuse 11.4 64-bit (originally with KDE4 desktop) 4 Gigs ram, built-in Intel video card.
Again, configuration under KDE works fine but under Gnome 3 I don't get a signal to my second monitor. Haven't located any other threads covering this kind of behavior but Google searches indicate that early versions of Gnome 3 had multi-monitor problems.
I write a lot in French and I need the french accent on my ubuntu. How can I get the shortcuts I used in windows such as "alt+130" to work again? When I use them, either nothing happen or it changes my tabs in firefox and chrome, I haven't found how to override this. I don't seem to have found anything in keyboard shortcuts...
I'm using two OS in parallel, and all of my data are stored in partition D. I want to create a shorcut to a specific folder inside it, e.x: D:/path/to/folder and put it in the Ubuntu Desktop (~/Desktop).
I somehow managed to screw up my 'switch between windows shortcut' when changing the settings for compiz. Now I cannot get it to work at all, despite trying to solutions on this and other forums. I removed compiz with the software center and my alt-tab shortcut still didn't work--although it IS enabled and set correctly in the System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts menu. I reset the alt-tab combo so something else (alt-space, which works for its normal setting of bringing down the window's dropdown menu) but it still did not work to switch between windows.
On the Mac, I use Command + ` (the tilda) to cycle through windows in the current application (eg terminal or chrome). It's like alt + tab except only for the current application's windows. (possibly on compiz but without any flashy exposee like graphics)?
Is there any website that has complete list of all the shortcuts of applications/softwares of Windows, Mac, Linux Platforms. If Atleast for popular and veryuseful softwares.
I would like to create a keyboard shortcut to minimize/iconify an active window. Tried xbindkeys-config but no luck.
Alt+F2 brings up the run command on nearly any desktop environment Alt+F4 kills the app being active at the time Win+D will minimize all windows
How can I get Alt+F3 to minimize/iconify a window which is active? Thin can be achieved by Alt+Space+N but it's to long and I would like to change this keybind on Alt+F3 since it is quick.
Is there an application in windows wherein you can see and manage the available shortcuts:
Keyboard shortcuts that calls applications Keyboard shortcuts in applications Built-in Windows shortcuts
So that you can actually see if you are repeating a keyboard shortcut or not. Because often times I tend to assign similar shortcuts to applications. Anything for windows(freeware), if this is available on linux then please share it.
how I can set the top button on my mouse to be a shortcut for the desktop effect "Present Windows"? I have a Logitech MX900 mouse and the button I'm talking about is the one on the top that looks like two overlapping rectangles.See picture here: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
I just installed F13. What I want to do is set a shortcut to gnome-terminal by pressing the "windows" key (Super_L). By default, F13 assigns this key as a modifier.do not want. How can I unset it as a modifier and set it as a standalone key (like a letter key)
Is it possible to map the same "Present Windows - All Desktops" action which is invoked by activating the top left corner of active screens via a keyboard shortcut? I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2
However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2
and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).
System->Preferences->Keyboard ShortcutsClick on "Start a terminal" and try to set the shortcut key to the "windows key" (between control and alt), it doesn't do anything. I can set it to other keys without a problem. I have done this in Fedora 11 - it named the key the "Super L" key if I remember correctly.
I recently switched from GNOME to xfce, and I can't get working a simple keyboard shortcut to ssh to another machine.
In GNOME, I made a launcher (which gnome-do found); the first time I ran the launcher I'd get an X11 popup asking for by ssh passphrase, and then it would be saved for the rest of the GNOME session, making logins nice and fast.
In xfce, a similar launcher opens a new xfce4-terminal, which asks for the passphrase every time. I made a keyboard shortcut to "ssh -X me@server" -- this open an X11 popup for the passphrase, but no terminal, because there is no "run in terminal" option for keyboard shortcuts.
I'd be okay with running "ssh-add" at every login, but it has to be system-wide, rather than attached to one terminal instance. Passphraseless ssh is an options but a creepy one.
I just downloaded flock browser as a tar.bz2 file. I extracted into a drive other than home in my pc. Then in system>preferences>main menu, I created a new item under menu>applications>internet and pointed to "flock-browser". The application works fine but I don't get that flock icon in the menu. Is there any way to get it? Its actually present in "icons" folder inside the flock folder.
i wrote a hello world script using bash and i'm trying to run this script via terminal by pressing F1, but it is not working.my hello world script is:
Code: #!/bin/bash echo Hello World
in the keyboard shorts of ubuntu, i have F1 as: Code:gnome-terminalhome/user/hello_world_scripti'm obviously doing it wrong, but i would like to learn the proper way
I've tried Googling this question with no luck. I'm trying to get a program called Aptana to run as admin so I can edit my website under /opt/lampp/htdocs. Here's the link to Aptana: /home/richard/.Aptana Studio 3/.AptanaStudio3
What would I have to put into the shortcut command to run as admin?
I have 3 hard drives on my computer now, and a total of 6 partitions. My question is can I put a shortcut to one of them on the Unity Bar? Like the same icon you see when you mount a hard drive and it pops up in the bar.
i set delete as a keyboard shortcut for the gnome-terminal accidentally and later changed it to ALT+T but now both DELETE and ALT+T open up a terminal its really annoying not to be able to use the delete key.....every time i press DELETE a terminal window opens up.
In cairo-dock when I hover over the 'shortcuts' applet it shows me what's in my 'places' menu, but I have to click twice on any object to open it, and then it opens two instances of whatever I opened. As in I click once, could wait up to an hour probably, then click again and finally it opens up but twice.
I have a simple bash script rd.shCode:#!/bin/bashrdesktop -g 1279x757 ${1} &This is setting a specific resolution at which time devilspie moves it to the workspace I want.I am trying to run this in the run command dialog (alt-f2) as rd.sh <servername> but it does not work.My goal is to be able to create a desktop menu item/shortcut in gnome to some specific servers and/or run this from the Run Application dialog. I can run this without issue from the terminal.
