I know how to take a screenshot of my desktop, but how could I take a video?... I just wish to send a friend how to set a few things on his website but instead of writing the whole process, I would rather send him a video.

Is it even possible to use an Flv video file downloaded (very short) off you-tube as an animated desktop wall paper. I was trying to get it to work with xwinwrap but when i go to set the screen saver i want to play as the wall paper i am not able to see the video file i want, it just shows the default screen savers. I was wondering if what i am attempting is possible. Also if it is, how might i go about this?

Can anyone recommend a reliable setup to do this? Most sites require some Flash thing which isn't available on Ubuntu. I tried webcamstudio a while back and that seems to have a huge (5s+ delay).

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?

The vesa driver is not capable of running Compiz, you need to install the proper driver for your graphics card. I tried with newer kenel, but no luck. I tried to install the newer driver from intel. I am not quite sure I managed to install them properly, though. Is this the appropriate sub-forum for this topic, or "hardware and laptops".
i have noticed about 10 desktop crashes since may, because of gnome videos(totem). in particular, when i repeatedly open and close videos, the desktop freeze. should i use another program?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

when I start up ubuntu (10.10) and reach the desktop, the screen is messed up. The center of the screen becomes blurry, and it looks like what is normally the right part of the screen is duplicated in the middle of the screen (with what should be the middle of the screen disappearing).
I think its an ATI video card, and I tried to install different driver from Softwarecenter but no succes.I know the screen is working, because when I boot forinstance, the Ibm logo is showed nicely across the screen. So its not a hardware issue. Another thing, I got puppy linux to work correctly after having the same grapphic issues on that OS when I first installed it. But some how I managed to get the right drivers. But as I like ubuntu more, I would appriciate your help with figuring this out
ps. when I try to setup screen resolution in System>Settings>"resolution", Ubuntu says "unknown display" (marked with red color).
im looking for a good screen recorder that can record video from my desktop and audio through a mic and i need it to export the files as mp4 so i can edit it. i can use terminal commands if necessary but would prefer a GUI because i only have a few days to learn the program.

I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting

doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?
is this possible? Or does one have to use the binary blobs?

The way to fix it would be to separate the audio and video streams, speed up the video (the audio is FINE, it's the video that's wrong), and then recombining them. (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

I followed the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto but still have the same issue. I have also read many posts but I have trouble understanding some of the responses. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

Problem is very similar to: Problems playing mkv HD films in opensuse but not windows but with enough differences that I start a new thread:
* playback in VLC does not work -- there is only sound
* playback in SMplayer works, however -- when I scroll forward, the video freezes and sound continues, to unfreeze video I have scroll a tiny bit backward
I tried changing the video ouput driver (in SMplayer) from xv to xv/noveu-nvidia, it didn't help. Please note, that I use the same settings (initially) as before in OS11.1.
I been looking on Google to convert videos to mp3 audio and all I get is just a video conversion from one format to another and some things I installed just get error messages so I took them back off. Anyone know the proper syntax in Mencorder to convert a video just to audio? Or any other program I can use that won't cause this much trouble?

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?
