I'm running Jaunty, and I'm trying to play a film that is .mkv format through VLC. Everytime I try to play it, the screen either freezes up completely, or it sends me to the login screen. It's only with this one film, though. I have a number of other films in this format, and they all work perfectly.I'm a bit of a newb, so I'm not entirely sure where I would find out what went wrong

The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

I've been using ubuntu 10.10 for about 6 months and have enjoyed it up to now. However, in the last few days I have been getting repeated crashes where the monitor goes black and the login screen appears.I can't identify a definite trigger although it seems to be more common when using firefox. Could anyone suggest where I should look to solve the problem? I thought it might be related to desktop effects so switched from compiz to metacity but that didn't work. I haven't updated or installed any new graphics card drivers

Everything seems to be working fine with the exception of AOL mail. When I try and access my mail, the screen goes black and then the login screen is displayed. Yahoo mail works fine.

Doing these upgrades wreaked havoc on my system. I have been able to fix most of the problems that were caused but I am having trouble finding information on the following:
When I boot up the system and after passing the GRUB loader, the system freezes up at the login screen and I have to power down.
If I hit ESC at the GRUB screen and choose Kernel 2.6.32-25-generic (recovery mode) and then choose "failsafe graphic mode", then I am able to log in to GNOME as normal.
After 2 months without any problems, my second screen plugged on my laptop has stopped working. It works on my windows partition. When I start the computer, I see the login screen on both screens. When I enter the password, both screen turn to black. If I unplug the extra monitor, the laptop start normally.I'm on Ubuntu Natty, my laptop is a Thinkpad E420s with Intel HD graphics, i5 cpu, 4gb ram.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi just found out (late i know) that the knew skype beta 2 now comes with the awesome screen-sharing feature that skype for mac and skype for win comes with..so i uninstalled the old skype and installed the new beta version with lightning quickness to try that out.. (and show off my compiz effects to all my friends lol!!)anyway, it seems to only work halfway for me. sharing the FULL screen will cause my skype app to crash and close instantly. but sharing a screen selection works just fine... even though i can't resize the screen selecting area.. but it's not that big a deal for me.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. I just got rid of my Dell P990 CRT and replaced it with a Samsung B2330H LCD. I got the resolution changed to 1920x1080 at 60hz through System/Preferences/Monitors and the new display looks great! There is one problem, though: the computer boots into a resolution that is not supported by the new monitor. As a result, the login screen is blank. The monitor puts a little floating message on the screen that says, "Optimum Resolution is 1920x1080..." When I start up, I hear the "bongo sound" and I hit ENTER, then enter my password, then ENTER again, and the computer desktop appears in 1920x1080 and all is well. But how do I get the login screen to appear in 1920x1080?

I have installed the Startup Manager, but it does not allow 1920x1080 to be selected. I have also tried using Startup Manager to select other resolutions, but the login screen is still blank.
Isn't there some trick to force the login screen to appear in a specific resolution using xrandr? What file does this command go into? Maybe my old configuration files from my Dell monitor are interfering?

I had to fight to get it to install kept freezing and stopping. I finally got it installed. It runs fine and is fast. I like it alot and then after about 5 to 10 min. The screen locks up or will distort in multicolor stripes across the screen. I cant figure out whats going on!
I did just notice that the specs say it's a 64bit possessor and I'm running the 32bit ubuntu will that make a difference?
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot

That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

After i put my Login ID and Password the System Hangs..
And if i use lightdm then it hangs during boot..
I searched on the internet and notice that the setup gui for changing gnome login screen is no longer available (e.g. gdmsetup does not come up with a theme that can change login screen theme.)What is the right way or where there may contain such information? I google but most of returned are prior 2.30.2, which is the version currently I am using.

Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. I have been unsuccessfully attempting to change my personal login avatar, following the advice on the Arch Linux wiki: [URL] .... I began by naming my desired avatar .face and saving it in my home directory. That didn't work, but I was not discouraged because the wiki mentioned that there were issues with the ".icon method". So I then installed accountservice, created a directory for my user, and saved my desired avatar as a 96x96 PNG named username.png in the appropriate directory (making sure that it had the necessary permissions, of course). That didn't work either...
I'm on Debian testing Gnome 3.18 and I searched, tried, searched and tried... no way! numlock will always stays off whenever I reboot and reach login screen.

After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

I've just installed F14 64bit on my desktop and I tried to run Open Office Writer. As a result, GNOME crashed and the rendering of the desktop was messed up. I had to force a reboot, and now everytime I login the Open Office recover dialog causes a crash again. I suppose it has something to do with the opensource nvdia drivers and OO.o's toolkit but I can't look at it with the crash-on-login thingy there (I suppose I can install the closed source drivers from a tty now that I am thinking it again....)

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
